When I started watching this film I was trying to figure out where it was going for the first hour. And with a film that approximately 1hr37mins that's pushing my limits on clarity (or as the politicians call it, transparency). On the other hand what fun would it be it we could figure out what was going to happen next (but I do like to know what's happening now).

All the actors do a good job. James Woods is always great and he maintains his standing in this film. Dorff is believable as the alcohol/drug abusing detective, although I don't know if many police departments would allow his attire, demeanor and foul odor to continue for very long. I like Walton Goggins in this although I don't think there was enough of him. That broad toothy smile of his is a trademark but we did not see any of that in this flick.

Even after the film discloses part of the overall plot and what you think is the missing piece there is still a finish that surprises. Otherwise, this would be a humdrum movie.

One concept that was used extensively were flashbacks, especially at the beginning, that left me confused about what the actual storyline was or which storyline I was suppose to follow. But I got past it and enjoyed the movie.

This film is worth a watch.

Police detective David 'Cal' Callahan (Stephen Dorff) takes down a rapist cop but his boss Captain Verona (James Woods) cuts a deal to sweep the embarrassing situation under the rug. Cal is still haunted by a traffic stop where he was almost killed. One night, a man, claiming to be his unknown savior, comes to him with his dead daughter's diary. Zhanna Dronov (AnnaLynne McCord) was a stripper who started dating a client called Angel (Walton Goggins).

I like the dark tone, Dorff's performance, and big revelation. On the other hand, the first half is too complicated, there are too many flashbacks, and there are too many characters to focus on. This movie should focus on Cal and his Captain, Zhanna and Angel. Cal may not even need a family. It should explain more clearly Cal's investigation of Angel. He should probably assume that Angel is Zhanna's pimp to start. The overall story just needs more clarity. While this is by no means great, it is good enough with that reveal.

It's better than "Brake", and certainly more entertaining than "Somewhere".

I rented "Pawn" and "Officer Down" last night for a b-cop-double-feature. Pawn was alright, but Officer Down gets the nod out of the two for its' better acting across the board.

It marginally works as a character study.

The pacing is alright and the writing isn't half-bad.

The film needed a bit more interaction and back-story to the marriage/wife - which might have added some genuine drama. Really, that was the problem with both of these movies.

While this is a "b" movie, and I am rating it a 6(56/100), I'm not going to be adding to my "jeremy's B Movie marathon list". I don't know that I can give this my recommendation, but there are certainly worse options in the redbox.

The film has just enough surprises, and that 'better than usual' performance from the lead that makes this slightly better than average, and certainly better than most of the b-straight-to-DVD fair that's out there.

"Today is the day I die." Detective Callahan (Dorff) is a good cop with a checkered past. While out protecting someone he gives chase and does what he has to do, when the person he is chasing turns out to be a cop he wonders what is going on. Things begin to become confusing to him and he is struggling to do his job and fall back into his old ways. This movie starts off very exciting and gripping and stays that way for about half the movie. Then it starts to slow down a little. I think the problem with this is that it is a really good idea for a TV show but when stretched out into a full length movie they have to drag some things out and that really hurts the pace of the movie. This is still worth watching though and keeps you interested for most of it. While not amazing this is still better then most of the movies like this that have come out. Overall, worth seeing but would have been better as a TV show like "Blue Bloods" or "NYPD Blue". I give it a B.

In Bridgeport, Connecticut, Detective David 'Cal' Callahan (Stephen Dorff) is a family man, married with Alexandra (Elisabeth Röhm) with the teenage daughter Lanie (Beatrice Miller). Cal has an unscrupulous past, drug and alcohol addicted, and he has reborn when he was shot by a drug dealer and saved by a stranger.

When a stranger meets Cal in a bar, he tells that he was the one who saved him and gives the journal of his deceased daughter to Cal. He tells to Cal that she committed suicide after Angel (Walton Goggins), a regular of a night-club owned by the drug dealer Royce Walker (Dominic Purcell) where she danced, beaten up on her and raped her in the parking area. Cal investigates Angel and when he sees the man in his car in front of the school where Lanie studies, he believes that Angel is a pedophile and Cal decides to take an attitude. But he finds that he is a marionette and someone is pulling the strings and watching him dance.

"Officer Down" is a good police story with a non-linear screenplay developed like a puzzle with flashbacks and plot points that keeps the truth hidden until the conclusion. Detective David 'Cal' Callahan is tailored to Stephen Dorff that has good performance and James Woods is great as usual. The conclusion with the redemption of Cal is a little disappointing and unbelievable especially considering that Cal has a family to support and certainly mortgage to pay, and spending five years in prison does not seem to be a second chance in life. He could have accepted the report offered by Captain Verona and turned into a good cop. My vote is seven.

Deep in Characters this is quite an Engaging, but Bleak and Cold, look at another Tortured Cop who seeks a Second Chance. It is a Rich Story-Line that Requires the Viewer to pay Attention with Twists and Turns and multiple Flashbacks.

It has a Crisp and Clear Look and the Performances are (except for the ever intense and intemperate Dorff) Stiff, but Credible. Police Cover-Ups and Stripper's Uncovered are Nothing New but this, based on a True Case, Fine at a Bad Cop Gone Good Story.

This Barely Released Movie is Worth a Watch for its Rich and Layered Production that Demands some Respect Despite some Indifference from the Money-Men and Critics.

I've no idea how the other reviewers rated this 7, 8 and 9 out of 10. They're either riding Stephen doff or related to him. Weak cast, bland story, boring execution and Dorff is just massively cringe. Dominic Purcell and Anna Lynn what's her face.. Come on! They couldn't act their way out of a paper bag and some child from American idol.

I wasn't expecting much.. But I got less that I anticipated. It's like cast and crew up on this movie 15 mins in.

Avoid like the plague. There are so many other they're so many other things you could be doing

A fabulous combo of gritty cop drama and action, with just the right amount of 'who dunnit' (or rather, 'who is it?') thrown in. There is a lot of ambiguity amongst the characters and their intentions, heightened by the use of flashback/dream sequences... which could annoy the less attentive but completely captivate problem-solving film viewers. It made it all the more enjoyable for me - putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Superb acting and an original story never short of a twist. I knew little about this film before going in, and I'm thankful as I was fully immersed throughout all the confusion and plot arcs. I think the title was the only thing that didn't do it justice - it is more than just another police-action-drama story.

Brian A Miller's 'Officer Down' is A Dark Cop-Drama. Its an impressive film, that delivers a gritty story convincingly along-with good performances.

'Officer Down' is dark, gritty & violent. Its certainly not meant for the faint-hearted. Brian A Miller's Direction is focused. John Chase's Screenplay is convincing & the second-hour, in particular, has meaty sequences.

Performance-Wise: Stephen Dorff is remarkable in the lead role. Dominic Purcell is very good. AnnaLynne McCord is a complete natural. Walton Goggins is in decent form, while David Boreanaz & Stephen Lang are routine. James Woods is fantastic in a strong supporting role.

On the whole, 'Officer Down' deserves a watch.

Not only was this movie confusing, but boring. I wasn't really sure what Dorff's character was all about. Dorff can be a great actor when he has the right material to work with, but making crappy STD movies is not the way to go. I can't believe the cast for this kind of crap. James Woods must have been looking for a paycheck, same with David Boreanz. Dorff fans can do much better. Ironically enough, this is a similar film to another STD movie of Dorff's that is equally as terrible called, Tomorrow You're Gone

I wasn't expecting much when I saw the 5.5 rating on this movie but I was bored so I figured I'd put it in as background noise. The beginning is slow and somewhat hard to follow but midway through it really picks up and finishes well. I think the low ratings are from people who didn't make it through the movie and gave up 30 min in (understandably so)

Stars stephen dorff as detective callahan, a man with a past. When a bystander helps him after a shooting, he decides to return the favor. He reads the journal of a dead girl, and decides to do something about it. The whole film is a flashback, showing what led up to the opening scene. James woods is his police captain. It has some issues... the volume keeps jumping up and down. The script needed tightening up. Some editing mistakes. Some verrrry interesting tidbits in the trivia section, which may explain some things. And since callahan and logue look so similar, it's easy to get them confused. The basic story is pretty good, once we figure out what's going on, but it takes a while. ( the time lapse where we watch the night turn into day was actually pretty cool, at the halfway mark) its okay... with a little work, could have been better. Directed by brian miller. He seems to like stories about cops and killers. Story by john chase.

I have always liked Stephen Dorff, but most of his roles have been strong supporting ones. It is pleasant to notify that last years have seen him becoming a leading actor where he virtually fills out a movie (apart from Officer Down, in Brake last year - recommended as well). He can be both a convincing tough cop and a caring family man, a reliable person and a controversial one. As for Officer Down, he (as Detective David Callahan) as well as James Woods (as Captain Verona) provide the biggest value to the movie (the other actors seem to derive from Seagal-Lundgren type of movies). Woods is also an actor who makes movies more interesting to follow.

The plot is slightly cloddish, flashbacks and odd alterations are confusing and some scenes are questionable, especially Logue-related ones. The ending could have been more elaborated, too. Nevertheless, the movie is recommended for killing time and a bit longer than 1,5 hours passes without yawns and/or blah feelings.

It's always nice and refreshing to watch Stephen Dorff. He's one of the better actors, but does not have a really big blockbuster under his belt (Blade maybe, but that was a Wesley Snipes vehicle). This movie is also just a B-movie. But that doesn't mean it's bad! Quite the contrary, the story was so appealing, that quite a few good actors did sign up to make the movie.

Of course quite a few things are convenient and wouldn't stand the scrutiny of the viewer thinking too much about them. There is a morality issue at hand, but there is also or at least could be an issue with the ending. The actors involved have the charisma to just pull it off, but it still may feel cheap to some.

Filmed in the eyesore known as Bridgeport, CT, where the Mayor went to prison for corruption charges. After doung time, he was re-elected after his release and remains in Office.

With a good cast, it's a partial redemption story. Dorff is really good in this (Watch the Fox Series Deputy if you like him). The great James Woods always brings an edge to a film, and the ending was solid. The strip climb scenes were filmed at a dump called Scruples, which remains open today.

I'm unsure why they filmed this in CT. Had to be driven by one of the investors.

But engaging. Typical scuff nasty looking bearded cop. Unexplained attachment to continue on wanting to watch this movie further. Simultaneously the urge to change the channel! And then not.

Stephen Dorff has always had a dangerous, flint spark vibe to his work, and he employs it fully here in Officer Down, playing Detective David Callahan, a corrupt, volatile cop with a drug problem, and past affiliations with the wrong kind of people. This film is what many would classify as a b movie, but I for one found it a careful, well casted and acted, loving throwback to the gritty cop flicks of the 70's, something in the vein of Joe Carnahan's Narc, or even Training Day. It sets up for an out and out action headbanger, but surprised me by calming down, and subverting itself, becoming a well structured, exciting, character based crime story that had me paying attention the entire time. Callahan has a past of slumming it in shady, mob run clubs, up to his ears in coke and whores. When his crooked past comes back to haunt him in the form of clues to a forgotten cold case that conveniently seem to fall into his lap, he's spurred to dig up old, painful memories to get to the truth of what's been going on. For an out of left field indie, it has a surprisingly intricate plot that I really didn't expect, and the mid story twists are invigorating, and reminded me why I love this sub genre. The eclectic cast alone is enough to warrant interest, with many an actor cast far against type to excellent result. James Woods pisses everyone off as spitfire police captain Verona, David Boreanaz and Stephen Lang kick in great work as Callahan's suspicious colleagues. Dominic Purcell nicely underplays a strip club owning prick with silent, mirthful evil, Annalyne McCord is great as A stripper in mortal danger, Walton Goggins is awesome as Detective Logue, aka The Angel, who figures mysteriously in the plot, and there's nice work from Soulja Boy, Tommy Flanagan, Oleg Taktarov, and Johnny Messner in a cameo as a growling ex cop psycho. All the elements are brought together nicely to give us a bare bones, tough ass dose of character driven pulp that really enjoyable.

This film was some kind of a roller coaster intellectually, with a very different dramaturgy build of the story line. The excitement isn't in this film as you expect. I think you need to be aware of this following if you are to enjoy this: 1) Watch everything with a sharp eye, down to the details of writing and dialog. 2) Be prepared to see a film where nothing is like it seems to be. 3) The slow up build is for you to understand the rest, so be patient! 4) Expect this storytelling to be very different from the common Hollywood dramatic model. 5) This is not a thriller, rather a mind bending movie. 6) Watch this you are a detective yourself.

Most people watching this will have problems with it, if you're not prepared. This is a film which will have great fans, and lots of haters. It's a good film, but I must criticize it for being difficult to comprehend. It's in no way perfectly made to give the effect the makers wanted. Most of the audience are not able to follow a film like this if they are not identifying with some if the actors, or if they find the story exciting. This is where this film falls. We'll acted, doesn't mean you are absorbed with the story. Still quite good, if you have the patience. This film grows the last half hour. If you don't get it, it doesn't mean you're stupid. It just tells this wasn't your kind of mystery or that you weren't laying enough attention to the details.

The great slow heavy song at the club one hour into the film is Aaron Hendra "Bad machine".

This film had the potential to be wonderful, a real thriller. It has top notch acting talent all of whom are at the top of their game. Where can you find so many high talent actors in the same film and all of them are killing it?

And the story is pretty clever too. Has several twists and turns that you don't expect.

So what's the problem? Direction! The film is directed like it was a frst-time effort. All the suspense and action is stalled or muted. There is also some bad placements for the back scenes and some continuity problems. In the hands of a better director, this would be an unforgettable film.

This was a good movie but like most fictions these days they didn't require an ending that told us the years served by the guilty parties in order to make it seem like a true story. I would much prefer they just ended the movie without that nonsense. Someone stated in the Goofs area that he was served scotch twice by mistake but I do recall seeing a bottle of Maker's Mark on the table in front of him which is a bourbon and not a scotch whiskey.

Anyway, the movie is worth watching and keeps the viewer engaged and entertained. I'd say it's under-rated. But I wouldn't recommend it for impressionable teenagers which is why it has an R rating. It is very violent and has some nudity for those of you that don't like that sort of thing.
