Bill Skarsgård, who portrayed Pennywise/It in It (2017) and इट चैप्टर टू (2019), was initially not part of the show's cast when filming began. In a 2023 interview, when asked if he would return as Pennywise, he stated he was hesitant due to how much work it takes to portray such a character. Eventually, in May 2024, it was announced that Skarsgård had returned to the role for the show.
Original "It" (1986) author Stephen King said the following when the series was announced: "I'm excited that the story of Derry, Maine's most haunted city, is continuing, and I'm glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!".
The show will have a total of three seasons. Each season will take place in a different time period within Derry.
In March 2022, HBO and Warner Bros. announced the show as a prequel series to the IT movie franchise. The prequel was titled "Welcome to Derry" (later re-titled to "IT: Welcome to Derry"). The director of the two earlier films, Andy Muschietti, was announced to work as an executive director on the series with his sister, Barbara Muschietti.
The fictional town of Derry, Maine, which is the main setting in the "It" novel and its adaptations, was initially featured in a 1981 short story written by Stephen King titled "The Bird and the Album".
