Entertaining Enough

Having never read the books I wasn't really sure what to expect from The Sandman. Then after reading through the reviews and seeing how mixed they were I was even more confused about whether I should give it a try. I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it. I just read that it got renewed for a second season so that's good news. It looks like most of the negative reviews are from people that are mad that it's not exactly like the source material and I've never got that. As long as it's entertaining...who cares. Movies and shows have to be adapted for tv and are just based off the source material. Less than 5% of the people who watch these movies and tv shows have actually read the book or comic it's based on.

It's Worth Watching

I have to say I enjoyed The Sandman more than I thought I would. I have to admit I knew nothing of the comic or even heard of it so I had no expectations at all. It is definitely something different and unlike any show I've seen. The closest thing is American Gods but I stoped watching that in Season 2 as the quality of that show fell off after the first season. It has a solid 7.7 so it looks like most people seem to like it. I thought Tom Sturridge did an excellent job as the lead and Boyd Holbrook was just as good as one of the villains the of the story. The creator of the comic book (Neil Gaiman) was an executive producer so he had a big say as to where the story went and for it to stay true to the comic. I'm glad they didn't end the show on a cliffhanger and were able to give it a good solid ending.

"The Sandman: A Modern Masterpiece That Revives the Golden Age of Storytelling"

In an age dominated by 15-second reels, endless TikToks, and the constant noise of social media, The Sandman did something extraordinary-it made me forget the world around me and pulled me into its own. Watching this series felt like being transported back to a time when stories were allowed to breathe, when imagination ruled over algorithms, and when TV shows were experienced, not just consumed.

The Sandman is a rare gem of the 21st century that somehow channels the soul of the 20th. It reminds me of an era when shows were artfully crafted and not built around trends or virality. The pacing, the visuals, the storytelling-everything feels deliberate and rich with meaning. It's thoughtful, haunting, beautiful, and deeply emotional. It's not just entertainment; it's an experience.

What makes it even more special is how uncommon shows like this have become. In today's content-saturated landscape, patience and depth are undervalued. But The Sandman dares to go slow, to build a world, and to ask its viewers to pay attention. And it rewards that attention at every turn.

This might just be one of the most underrated shows of the 21st century. It deserves far more recognition than it's gotten. If you're someone who misses the golden age of storytelling, this show is your time machine.

Highly recommended for anyone who still believes in the magic of long-form, meaningful storytelling.

Enjoyable long view

The best thing about the show is that many episodes feel like movies. So much happens with them that time seems to linger. Even with Sandman walking and talking slowly... deliberately, the show packs in a lot in 40-45 minutes.

I was sad to see that there will not be more to enjoy but what was here was very nice. The special effects and scenery were exquisite.

I can't decide between a 6 and a 7

The good: I haven't finished the comics yet but I appreciate that the show attempts to stay close to the source material. There have been a staggering number of adaptations where writers insert their own ambitions into the project and it ends up looking nothing like the original work.

I also appreciate the casting for Morpheus. The actor embodies the character beautifully and is a joy to watch.

The production quality of the show is great and I like the pacing and flow of the story.

The bad: The forced diversity is awful. It's neither subtle nor organic and as a person of colour, it seems like western media thinks diversity is just black and white. Strong, black women lecturing a god and showing the error of his ways is about as ham-fisted as it gets.

Overall, I do enjoy most of this show and I would recommend it. It's just a shame that politics would mar what could have been a great show. Alas, it's just alright.

Great start but the show loses it's initial momentum

I thought the show was really great the first episodes, dark setting and interesting characters. Somewhere along the way I grew bored by the show however. I will probably watch the second season if it ever comes out since I am a fan of the novels. This was entertaining but the stark difference to how it started and how it ended made it less interesting for me. I hope the next season will focus on what made the first episodes so good. I think maybe sandmand will have a hard time to compete with all the upcoming franchises coming out this fall, I hope I am wrong though!

On another note, 600 characters requirement for a short user review is too damn long!

A good and original series.

First of all, series II is better than series I, and that doesn't always happen.

Series II is more mature. The main character definitely evolves more and analyzes his behavior. He even apologizes (though the first time it's a non-apology, just like with politicians).

The series is dark, baroque, stylized, and features some excellent reflections, such as: "The greatest curse of getting what you want is getting what you wanted." The series also requires a certain erudition, as the characters can reference a literary work, revealing only a fragment of the plot or the character's name but not the title. Or they encounter a whole galaxy of long-forgotten gods, from Odin (the perhaps more well-known one) to Ishtar (the perhaps lesser-known one).

The series features excellent humanist themes about the tragedies of ordinary people. There's a great character of a trans woman whose family behaved very badly at a funeral, and a young woman with gloves with a troubled past. These are truly excellent storylines.

Among the show's flaws is the seamless transition from one completed case to another, and then a third. Perhaps it would have been more sensible to make several, but shorter, seasons. Especially since some storylines feel a bit drawn out.

However, despite minor flaws, I think the show deserves 8 stars after the second season.

Beautiful world and initial idea ruined by unexisting plot

Meh, I had so much hopes for this show, especially season 2 - but it took what season 1 did wrong and manage to do it even worse; nothing ever happened. All plots look like they are chewed up by a 10 year old - every possible outcome is unpredictable, because you think to yourself : "It's impossible they are going to make it that stupid", and guess what, everytime it gets anticlimactic and dissapointing.

Only reason it's up to 5 its incredible world building, different mithologies and concepts melded in such a fun way, pallette od characters is incredible, and somehow all rules in the series' universe fall in place and make sense - for example, Dreams' parents; I was plessantly surprised how cool thath turned out

Of course, one last note; i understand it's 2025 - but for God's sake Netflix, does every male character have to make out with eac other on the series? Come on.

So, world building and characters: 10/10 Story/plot : 0/10.

I thoroughly enjoy this series

I knew nothing of the graphic series before watching this,, so I have no preconceived ideas of what this should or should not be.

It feels dark and gritty like a good graphic novel come to life. As one who enjoys a visual feast, I thoroughly enjoy the sets and details within each scene. I have watched the entire season at least 3 times and notice little things in every episode each time I watch.

I think that Tom Sturridge plays the part in an otherworldly spectacular way. I love the evolution of his character from distant, and godly, to one with a care for humanity. The premise of the "nightmares" is highly intriguing. Boyd Holbrook plays his character flawlessly. I despise him, but, at the same time can't stop watching when he is on the screen.

There are possibilities for growth and change within the series. I can't wait for season 2.

Season 2 is a dream

It's not very often that want to rewatch the show a day after I finish the final season. But this is definitely one of those times.

I really enjoyed season one when it came out, though I had some problems with the second half of it, and it's safe to say that I was excited for the follow-up. And season two did not disappoint.

It shows a massive tonal and atmospheric change from the first, shifts its focus to the actual main character instead of trying to follow multiple stories at once, and the story it weaves is absolutely heart-wrenching. I find the main theme of season two (the never-ending story of fathers and sons) infinitely more powerful and important than the story season one tells, and it makes it feel so much more grown up. Tom Sturridge is absolutely magnificent as Dream, and he truly takes his performance to a whole new level as we see his character change from what he was like in season one.

All the side characters are incredible lovable, and it's a joy to see Jack Gleeson back on screen. Ultimately, one of the best graphic novel adaptations I've ever seen, and I will never understand why it was decided to make the show only two seasons.

P. S. I've heard Tom say in an interview that when he asked Neil Gaiman what Dream is supposed to sound like, Neil said: "seductive and a little terrifying". On that account, the performance is a 11/10 for me.

Amazing lullaby

This show was so exciting. I've never fallen asleep during a show before. This one?? I watched it, passed out. Rewound it, passed out again. I think it's cursed-or it's a secret sleep aid and I think the plot is just a lullaby.

Great visuals, epic concept.......and the perfect cure for insomnia. :)

Season 1 is amazing, Season 2 is trash

When "The Sandman" first came out on Netflix, I fell instantly and absolutely in love with everything in the series... the plot was good and strong (even innovative!), the characters were well constructed and the world was built with substance, with a lot of layers. It was indeed a breath of fresh air when it comes to fantasy series or movies that have been coming out this past few years.

The script itself, having a lot of philosophy in it, was also something that attracted me because you could tell the lines were not forced at all. Overall, the series were a 10 out of 10.

But then, season 2 came out this year.

I was excited to see again another story happen in this fantastic world that was built but then... it was just a big, huge, disappointement. The plot is going side ways with no plausible justification on why "x" thing happens in the context of the story and the characters are full with lines that dont add anything relevant and seem unnatural for a certain character to say or act that way.

To make matters worse, how does it make sense to start throwing new characters every episode just to fill holes, when they add almost nothing to the general narrative?

The ending of season 2, was the cherry on top of a badly baked cake. I mean, it just splashes on our faces that they wanted to end the series as soon as possible but didnt even bother to build something that had quality and felt like it was thought over like the first season. It really made me angry to see such good characters (and amazing actors!!!), plot and story just thrown away to the trash literally to end something fast.

It's very sad because then people wonder why we dont have any good series or films with a fresh point of view being made and coming out like we had in the 90s/2000s, for example. Write better and dont waste great potential like in "The Sandman" season 2.

Wasted Potential

The Sandman - 64%

I've never read the entire comic, but I must say I loved the first six episodes. The remaining five chapters left a lot to be desired. At first, the series offers an interesting narrative, but it lacks character development; it's like watching a series without tension or clear direction. If they'd worked better on the narrative and the characters' performances (unconvincing and sometimes monotonous) starting with episode 7, it would have been more interesting. However, what happened during the casting? I wished Lucifer Morningstar had looked at least a little like David Bowie, as in the comic, but they cast a woman whose role would have been better suited Queen Grimhilde. Let's see what the second season has in store.

Great Adaptation ... that misses the best parts of the original Comics

Netflix's The Sandman is a great adaptation of the original comic-books (please don't call them graphic novels, they're comics).

Sadly this adaptation also fails to deliver the most important and strikingly emotional stories from the comics. The fate of the two angels in Hell, The Inn at the end of the world, Barbie's story, and many more.

I understand they've skimmed down the story to the bare minimum and essential to tell the fate Dream. However with it, they have disregarded precisely what the comics are all about, the stories of Morpheus and his Realm.

Hopefully, somebody else will have another go in 30 years.

That been said, the cast is spectacular, the photography is beautiful, and the whole atmosphere captures perfectly the tone and feel of the original comics.

I see some reviews complain about it being slow or too elaborate, ehem, The Sandman is proper mythology and a very deep family drama, not another one of Snyder's mental puke. It actually requires you to THINK.

Pity pity pity

So much potential wasted away on diversity directives and slow, empty talk. I get that the modern world needs to be more inclusive, but forcing it into every tv show for the sake of political correctness is just silly.

It's actually quite nice at first, but from episode four the show is all downhill. Total incoherence and disconnection from the primal idea from there on.

What I find amazing is that such top notch actors agreed into participating in this. I'm sure the book is much more interesting, but this adaptation is honestly not worth anyone's time. Pity pity pity, it could have been so much nicer.

When the Endless Ended Too Soon

As someone who has read the comics - The Absolute Sandman 1-4 and Absolute Death proudly sit on my shelf - I approached this adaptation with cautious optimism.

Season 1 blew those doubts away. From the extraordinary visuals to Tom Sturridge's hauntingly precise embodiment of Dream, it struck the delicate balance of fitting television while never betraying Neil Gaiman's original vision. Episodes like The Sound of Her Wings reminded me why the material was always considered "unfilmable", and why that was wrong.

Season 2 deepened the world. Season of Mists delivered scope, The Song of Orpheus merged Greek myth with tragic inevitability, and the introduction of Destruction and Delirium proved the Endless could thrive on screen. Even side players like Johanna Constantine and the Corinthian elevated the ensemble. For much of the season, it was intelligent, faithful, and frankly cinematic television at its best.

And then came the stumble. The closing arc in Ep 11, and then a needless Ep 12, felt indulgent and oddly slight... a missed opportunity to end with the grace and gravitas the comics achieved. Having loved Season 1 and nearly all of Season 2, this final note was jarringly flat, as if the production lost sight of its own rhythm.

Still, across two seasons, The Sandman remains one of the most ambitious and visually stunning comic adaptations ever attempted. Even with its uneven close, it captured the heart of Gaiman's mythos and gave us performances (Sturridge especially) that deserve to be remembered.

That Netflix has now cancelled it only underlines the melancholy: a dream realised, but cut short.

Spellbinding & visionary.

It's fair to say I've always been somewhat of a fan of the distinctively whimsical, quintessential eccentricity imbued within famous author Neil Gaiman's writing (ever since - in 2011 - first being introduced to it as a child in BBC1's 6th season of "Doctor Who", with his critically acclaimed episode "The Doctor's Wife") & therefore, as a long-time admirer of his impressive portfolio of work, growing up alongside his growing number of flourishing projects, I'd previously made consistent efforts to acquaint myself with his prior TV adaptations "Good Omens" & "American Gods" but admittedly, had never yet had the pleasure of reading the much beloved "Sandman" graphic novels (of which this series is based upon, widely considered to be his best) before. Hence, I personally went in to this season with no preconceived expectations & thus, I must concede - after viewing the first 3 installments - that this Netflix series has completely blown me away & ironically surpassed even my wildest dreams.

Of course, I can only comment as a casual viewer (& am unable to ascertain the faithfulness to the source material, present within these episodes), but within the first 3 hours, we as an audience are introduced to a rich, layered, enchanting world of pure imagination that is creatively borne, masterfully realised & the sheer scope & scale captured from beginning to end is honestly mesmerising. Indeed, it's no surprise to witness peculiar & cerebral fantastical wonders on screen - in a fantasy constructed from the inspired mind of such a quirky, ingenious scribe - yet nonetheless, I still found myself utterly confounded by the sheer regality & majesty of this grandiose, unconventional & wholly epic tale.

It's a credit to all of the cast & crew members involved, who've respectfully & lovingly brought such a breathtaking universe to life & I'm hopeful the quality established here in the preliminary chapters will continue throughout... Because from what I've seen, I'm seriously floored. It is utterly remarkable, beautifully dark & haunted & unlike anything I've had the opportunity to previously binge on the streaming service, in its history.

There's a palpable sense of history & mythology to it which immediately draws you in & I cannot wait to see more. What a major achievement!
