David Yeung is the son of Bolo Yeung, who played the antagonists Chong Li in Bloodsport (1988) and Chang Lee in its rip-off Bloodfight (1989). Bloodsport was the main inspiration for The Last Kumite (2024).

Michel Qissi, Paul Hertzog and Stan Bush were also part of the production of 1988's Bloodsport which was the first film to mention an illegal fighting tournament called the Kumite.

Producer Sean David Lowe convinced composer Paul Hertzog to come out of retirement to score the film.

The script was written with Scott Adkins in mind as the lead.

The film was made with the intention of reproducing the style and feeling of 1980s martial arts classics like Bloodsport (1988), Kickboxer (1989) & No Retreat, No Surrender (1986).
