Producer Mark Patterson said that this film was "my first foray into China and the first official Australia-China co-production to be produced between the two countries. The pearl dragon featured in the film was created by Adelaide visual effects house Rising Sun Pictures.

When opened in China the movie had a massive wide across 3500 screens.

Sam Neill was cast in the lead adult male role playing archaeologist Dr. Chris Chase in this dragon-featuring picture after having played a paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park' (1993) (and returning in 'Jurassic Park III' (2001)) which featured dinosaurs. Dragons are often considered to be related to dinosaurs because of their reptilian natures. Neill's characters in both were doctors of science.
