In his debut feature film Night Call, writer and director Michiel Blanchart takes the viewer on a sweeping journey through the city of Brussels during a single night as a young locksmith gets embroiled with dangerous criminals. It’s an ambitious story for a debut feature, but Blanchart executes it gorgeously through a fast-paced story, stellar cast, and gorgeous cinematography.

In 1961, Richard Matheson published a short story called "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" that became a cornerstone of TheTwilight Zone franchise. Rod Serling's original series included an instant-classic adaptation that has been endlessly referenced, and remade twice. 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Jordan Peele's 2019 reboot series both tackled the tale in contrasting ways, and watching the three versions together reveals much about why the Matheson story is so special.

The 1963 Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" featured a performance from William Shatner that makes up for the low-budget creature he sees on the wing of his plane. 20 years later, George "Mad Max" Miller remade the story with advanced FX for Twilight Zone: The Movie, and in 2019 the reboot series included "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet," a modern take that may be the most paranoid of them all.

It’s always a shock how quickly things can go from completely normal to totally f*cked up. In Michiel Blanchart’s Night Call (La Nuit se Traîne), a college student moonlighting as a locksmith gets pulled into an organized crime conspiracy after he opens a door into the Belgian underworld. What should have been a routine night of studying in between service calls suddenly becomes a fight for survival after he’s tricked into helping a stranger rob some very, very dangerous people. Oftentimes, it can feel like if you've seen one action thriller, you've seen them all. The genre often follows the same beats, with the same action set pieces, and the usual results. Night Call, a French-Belgian movie filmed and set in Brussels, has a familiar plot you've come across many times, but thanks to the writing efforts of Michiel Blanchart and Gilles Marchand, with Blanchart also in the directors' chair, Night Calls stands with better efforts due to its relentless high stakes and a believable and sympathetic performance from its lead, Jonathan Feltre. Night Call does nothing new, but it does the standards the right way.

French actor Jonathan Feltre is about to go through the wringer with the release of the new action thriller, Night Call, in theaters this Friday from Magnet Releasing. Set in the heart of the Belgian capital of Brussels, the film follows a young locksmith whose job typically keeps him out of trouble until one nighttime assignment thrusts him head-first into danger. Amid ongoing Black Lives Matter protests and clashes with police, he responds to an emergency call from a mysterious woman to fix her lock only to realize too late that she lied about her identity and is currently in possession of something that belongs to a dangerous and powerful man. Ahead of its release, Collider can share an exclusive sneak peek demonstrating the high stakes as Mady, played by Feltre, fights desperately for his life as he tries to clear up the misunderstanding.

Writer-director Michiel Blanchart’s Night Call is set against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter protests in Belgium, which offers Mady (Jonathan Feltre), the young locksmith at the center of the film, a neat and tidy reason for not going to the police after killing a man in self-defense. The victim is the real tenant of the apartment that a young woman named Claire (Natcha Krief) duped him into opening so she could steal a pile of cash. After dialing the cops, Mady quickly hangs up after seeing the demonstrations on the news, at which point one could be excused for thinking that our hapless hero has only just remembered that he’s Black.

Putting aside that Mady’s reluctance to get the police involved isn’t a terribly novel setup for a thriller, Night Call makes little effort to engage with how his race affects how he moves through Brussels.

“Among Ashes” transports players to a calming yet nostalgic experience that blends old-school horror with new-school horror gameplay. In the early 2000s, you begin by playing a shooter with a horror theme reminiscent of “Doom.” But then a friend tells you about a game called “Night Call.”

This multi-layered narrative encourages exploration of the fuzzy lines between the real and virtual worlds, reflecting the independent spirit of innovation in horror world telling.

The “game within a game” concept, allowing players to switch between the scary “Night Call” and their real-world apartment, is the game’s most notable feature. Themes from haunted games and urban legends are echoed in this duality to enhance immersion.

With its blocky graphics and wooden voice acting, the retro aesthetic evokes the PS1 era and captures the essence of early survival horror. “Among Ashes” creates an atmosphere that fans of the genre will enjoy, reminiscent of standards like “Silent Hill.

Bound In Heaven, the feature debut of director Huo Xin, won the top prize at the 2024 Rome Film Festival, with the awards unveiled at the Auditorium Parco della Musica on October 26.

The domestic abuse drama won best film in the Progressive Cinema Competition, the festival’s competitive strand, and also shared the best first feature award ex aequo with Edgardo Pistone’s Ciao Bambino.

Argentinian director, screenwriter and producer Pablo Trapero is to chair the jury of the Progressive Cinema Competition, the competition section of the Rome Film Festival.

Trapero will be joined on the Rome jury by editor Francesca Calvelli, French actress Laetitia Casta, UK producer Gail Egan, and writer and screenwriter Dennis Lehane.

Following a killer performance during the Olympics closing ceremony, Phoenix have jumped on a new remix of Kavinsky’s track “Nightcall” with Belgian vocalist Angèle. Stream it below.

Originally written by Kavinsky and Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, “Nightcall” was first released in 2010 and featured in the title sequence for the Ryan Gosling film Drive. During the closing ceremony in Paris, Phoenix debuted the reimagined version with Belgian star Angèle, which they’ve now officially recorded and released to streaming.

Capitalizing on the intensity and moodiness of the original song, Phoenix member Thomas Mars’ vocals interweave with those of Angèle in and out of the chorus to haunting effect. The pacing is also slightly quicker than the 2010 track, but the remix retains the ’80s flourishes of synths and vocoders.
