Stephen Chbosky wrote the book that the movie is based on. He also wrote the screenplay and directed the movie.
In Entertainment Weekly, it was reported that Emma Watson accepted the role because Stephen Chbosky told her, "Not only is this going to be one of the most important roles you play, but you're also going to have the summer of your life and meet some of your best friends." She later confirmed that this claim turned out to be true.
In an interview with Stephen Chbosky, it was stated, "Watching people like Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller, and Mae Whitman--who never had a prom or a proper graduation because they were always working--experience a high school life that many of us take for granted was truly special."
