The Sound of Waves is about an actress named Jenna, played by Alex Frnka, who auditions for an exciting new role but is conflicted when she finds out that her love interest, Ethan, is played by Tom Phelan, who is also the writer of the play. Both of them have to confront their past, making acting opposite each other more challenging. At first, Jenna almost loses the part, but her audition is so good that everyone involved knows she's the best and only choice.

Soda Persi, who plays Kathryn, the play's director, brings a fresh take to her role and good energy to every scene she's in.

The Sound of Waves is a fun film with good acting all around and excellent casting. The production value was impressive, very polished for a low-budget indie. The editing maintained a good pace, and the overall story was enjoyable to watch. I thought I knew how it would end, only to be pleasantly surprised. I also liked how the film ties in the ocean with the story.

Ethan and Jenna were a couple of thespians who fell in love. But when Jenna came out as a lesbian, Ethan pulled the plug. Fast forward 10 years and now Ethan and Jenna are ancient history. They say write what you know. So Ethan pours it all into a script. He partners up with Katheryn, a director and they hold a casting for the play. Guess who shows up? You'll have to watch the film to find out-okay, it's Jenna. Jenna shows up, slays the sides and nails the part. Then Jenna reads the rest of the script...Okay, now you've really got to watch the film. You see, Ethan (Tom Phelan) and Jenna (Alex Frnka) could easily be real-life partners. Their chemistry is that good. Also expect a standout performance from Ione Butler.

The movie packs a lot of story into its short runtime -- under 90 minutes -- and keeps you engaged throughout. It felt raw and real which made it super relatable! The main characters and their relationship with each other, both past and present, showed a complexity and rawness that kept me invested and wanting to know more and see how their story would be resolved. Great watch!

In less skilled hands, this premise might've grown stale quickly. However, writer Tyler Dowey's script is both intelligent and emotionally gripping, ensuring the narrative remains fresh and engaging throughout. Supporting characters are also intelligently drawn (Phelan's character is married; Frnka is planning her impending wedding to her wife-to-be). As the two leads delve into their roles during rehearsals, old feelings for each other resurface, straining their current relationships. Cinematography and sound are solid. I highly recommend this endearing indie gem! It's perfect for a date night.
