Matt Barr, Katherine McNamara, and Justin Johnson Cortez in Walker: Independence (2022)

Walker: Independence

It may not be Deadwood or 1883, but I enjoyed the pilot!

As a fan of western movies and series, i find the pilot a promising start and am quite excited with this series. It's a mix of western era with modernity (more CW type, include modern music). Initially i didnt think it would work, but ho boy for me it sucked me right in. It may not be everyone's cup of tea if you are a fan of authentic 1800s era western genre. Walker Independence and Walker might be the best series on the CW! It has a diverse cast, and this diversity makes sense! I am also a fan of Jared from Gilmore Girls and Supernatural, which made me more excited for the future of both Walker and Windy.

Looking forward the upcoming episodes!

Backdrop beauty

I'm excited to see a western on the small screen. The time is right. I think people are looking for escapism that isn't totally fantasy. The world is in turmoil with many unknowns and a western takes us back to a time when we thought things were more straight forward. However, they have found a way to expand our antiquated thoughts of the old west and created a much more realistic diverse group of people.

The outdoor scenes were spectacular. They introduced a lot of cast members that were full of life, but I felt very connected to most of them in that short 42 minutes. Some great chemistry is going on as well.

New style western

This is ok at best. The story is ok. The setting is ok. What is not ok is the obtrusive and endless music that interferes with the dialog. Why do producers and directors feel that they need music to make the story more dramatic or tense?

The filming is good. The shows these days seem to be all done in the dark so that half the time you don't know what is happening. This program is bright. Good for them.

The first episode is good but is this story going to carry on all the way through the series. I doubt if this thread can sustain itself very long. Other story lines will have to be employed which will be a good thing.

The second episode will decide if I continue to watch.

An enjoyable return to the genre

As a longtime fan of westerns, I was a prime candidate for Walker: Independence. It's visually beautiful, from the cinematography, to the costumes, to the cast. You get just enough of a taste of each character in the pilot to make you want to see more of each of their stories, and the chemistry between them all is there right off the bat.

The revenge plot is of course well-trod territory, but the mystery behind the motivations for Liam Collins' death present ample opportunity for exploration, especially considering the hints that are dropped in the pilot about certain other characters. It will be interesting to see how the relationships between everyone develop as more is revealed.

Dinged a star because I'm a purist and the modern music cues chaffed a little, but otherwise it was a very enjoyable romp and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Looks like a Westworld episode to start, but the foundation is promising

Following Paramount's effort at backstorying "Yellowstone" with "1883" and "1923," the CW expands the "Walker, Texas Ranger" universe with "Walker: Independence." Mashing up the Lone Ranger origin story a bit, apparent Walker matrilineal antecedent Abby Davidson (Katherine McNamara) and her police officer husband Tom are traveling west post-Civil War to escape corruption in Boston and start anew in Independence, Texas. Parking their wagon (improbably toting a large piano) for a romantic interlude proves fatal for Tom, who is shot by an outlaw who goes to assume Tom's new job as Sheriff of Independence; Abby starts on a quest to secure justice for her late spouse, and the genesis of the 21st-century Walker persona is launched.

McNamara looks poised to lead the cast as a modernized equivalent of Barbara Stanwyck in "The Big Valley" (1965-69), though an Irish immigrant overlay on her character would have been a nice touch. And, the demands of network tv take the inevitable toll on the authenticity of the female roles - just as "Big Valley's" actresses looked like they sprang from the front cover of "McCall's," WI's female cast gives the vibe of having dropped by from the "Riverdale" set. Outlaw ally Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr) seems a bit too refined as a believable gunslinger, but he could weather well. He may be the Walker patriarch, but his current Latina love interest may have to be sidetracked for that to come about.

The Independence set can't get away from the little town in the middle of nowhere vibe so many Westerns display; it would take little trouble to show a road junction, river crossing, mining operation or other indicator that most Western towns were founded upon. On the scale of general authenticity, Independence clocks in midway between the storybook set of "Gunsmoke's" (1955-75) Dodge City and the more realistic rough-hewn world of "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" (1971). Post-Appomattox the real Independence was a substantial place hosting Baylor University, and more creative writing might have worked that in. A Native American component is introduced early, though inexplicably a band of too-far-East Apaches are pressed into service; a quick read of "Empire of the Summer Moon" (2010) would have provided a wealth of good stories about the more regionally-correct Texas Comanches. New Mexico filming locations stand in for what is ostensibly West Texas, though Independence is located in the somewhat more verdant Austin area.

Since CBS pulled the plug on Gunsmoke in 1975, the Western (largely due to genre exhaustion and storyline repetition) has struggled to get back on the small screen; cable production, direct to video, and greater reliance on general 19th-century drama have enjoyed mixed success in reinvigorating the form. Perhaps the prequel approach to the modern era shows will prove of value in continuing a line of dramatization extending back to James Fenimore Cooper.

Can't Wait For More💯

All the promo I'd seen had me already somewhat invested in this show, but now that I've seen the pilot I'm 100% hooked! I'm hooked on the plot, the cast of characters, and the town of Independence itself! It's all so well and beautifully done and you can tell everyone in front of and behind the scenes truly cares about the story and being authentic to the diverse history they're portraying. It's a prequel to Walker, about the start of the Walker family legacy, but is more than capable of standing alone. You don't need to be in love with Jared Padalecki's Cordell Walker to fall for the people of Walker Independence. I love it and can't wait for more!

I thought it was absolutely entertaining

I waited two episodes to give my review because it seemed like everyone was going off the deep end here. How such a little show on a small network could get people who've barely ever reviewed anything (if ever) to get off their couch and have such a visceral reaction to this harmless show. Ones? I thought it might be worse than Chucky. Of all the shows out there in the last 10-20 years, this was the one they had to let everyone know was sooo bad it barely rated. I was afraid as a die hard western fan that it would be terrible.

Well, it wasn't. The characters were very interesting, the story is intriguing, the production value OUTSTANDING for a small network. And I am a Western Junkie, my favorite. I've seen every single one, many multiple times with my fave being Once Upon A Time In The West. Others like the Original Django, the man who shot liberty valence, high noon, the wild bunch, the searchers, red river and of course the man with no name trilogy and many more. I love them all. Walker Independence is a perfectly fine show with heart, intrigue and humor. And anyone giving it a one has a vendetta or something because those should be reserved for the most awful of shows in TV history.

I :Edit after finishing

Just saw this come up on my HBO Max subscription last night! I didn't know what to expect and figured it was linked to the Walker series( which I don't like because of Oluphant! I guess I was hoping it would be something like Deadwood or Hell on wheels. Tho no where near as gritty it's not bad. I fell asleep ( can't remember what episode I fell asleep but somewhere around 8? Some of the acting's atrocious but like Matt Barr,Lawrence Kao and Mark sheppard as usual the women are hit or miss but the actor who plays Cate isn't bad. I'll finish it tonight and revise my review if needed but for something new it's not bad! Edit after finishing.. Well now we have to wait and see if there's a second season.. I had hoped for a better payoff and the sheriff didn't go all rogue and it was his brother! It sure looked like it was his brther in the flashbacks but I fast forwarded thru alot of that! Yes they've had showers since 17ad and indoor plumbing since the early 1800's to the women who didn't think so. And I watched this on HBO and it's a CBS production not CW just because they may have aired it first!

If Disney made a Western !

It looks 'nice', the characters are stereotypical Western movie characters, they all look good in their 'nice' costumes, the sets are 'nice' and the plot is very simple.

The trouble is I've seen all these characters before and all these storylines in other movies and series, there is nothing new here, it feels like I've actually watched it before and the dialogue is all too predictable ! It's too much like a soap opera for my tastes and not realistic or gritty enough, it would have been much more interesting if they didn't use 21st Century words, phrases and mannerisms and actually looked like they hadn't had a bath for a while or didn't spend large sums of money on hair products etc. All the men have great physiques and are well groomed and well spoken and the women are beautiful and sexy with hidden agendas, clear heads and excellent emotional control !

It's just a nonsense costume drama with eye candy !

Entertaining but...

Some of the acting is lacking; especially that of Katie Findlay. All of the actors are passable with that one exception. She seems like a modern day California resident trying to fit into the 1800's. Actually, no; it doesn't seem like she's trying at all. She's just terrible in this role to the point that I'm guessing she must be related to a producer. Beyond her seriously lacking performance, I find myself pleased to find an original series set in the old west. While certainly not bringing home a shelf full of awards, the story is intriguing and the plot continues to build with each passing episode.

I don't know how y'all watched this

So I don't know how anybody watched this past the first 10 minutes of the first episode.

I hadn't watched the OG Walker and only clicked on this show because it was recommended after I watched The English.

Everything was bad in those first few minutes. The innacurate hair, eyebrows and underclothes of the main character, the stupid decision to stop your wagon on the side of a trail for an annoying montage of making out... survival is paramount. Nobody would do that.

I turned it off, first impression was this is a poorly done "western" with no regard to historical accuracy or real people. It actually made me quite angry, there is no excuse now days. Bad writing, poor acting, whoever produced this clearly doesn't care. Not worth watching a full episode whatsoever.

Setting the Stage for a New Era

I was excited for this show the moment the premise was announced, and it was well worth the wait. Like many people, I was worried an intriguing idea would be ruined and given the stereotypical CW treatment, but this is no low budget, teenie bopper soap opera. CW under new ownership is starting off with a very promising bang.

Let's start with the cast. Yes, they're all pretty and have way nicer teeth than anyone in the old west could ever dream of, but that's where the usual CW treatment ends. The acting of this cast is top notch, with off the charts chemistry from the start. Kat McNamara holds herself with the effortless gravitas befitting of a woman of Abby's stature. She's no wilting flower, but she doesn't immediately become a hardened hero following her husband's death. A capable woman tossed into the deep end, but willing to learn how to swim instead of sinking or having someone come to her rescue. Matt Barr's Hoyt toes the line between charming rogue and dangerous criminal, but you can tell that there's more than meets the eye with him. Abby may be the leading lady, but Hoyt isn't a mere plot device in her story and won't be easy to control. Our introductions to the rest of the players in Independence leave you wanting more in the best way possible. It's clear that everyone is more than what they seem (or not what they seem at all), and there's no such thing as a coincidence in Independence. Despite being a relatively new town, all of the characters have history with each other ready to be explored. We have Kate, the overlooked white dove who seems to have a finger in every pot all over town. Kai, the town's laundry man, restauranteur, and friend of Kate who found his way to Independence through deadly railroad work. Augustus, Deputy Sheriff passed over for promotion despite his years of hard work, commitment to the town, and keen eye for trouble. Calian, the Apache tracker who once worked alongside Augustus and is curious about the town, but cautious. Lucia, Hoyt's lady love and rancher's daughter with dreams beyond the ranch. And that's not to speak of our obvious villains Sheriff Davidson and Hagan. It's clear they're bad news, but we don't know yet how their deep their scheming runs and what it means for the rest of the town.

The pilot wastes no time on exposition and some may feel we don't get enough time with all the characters, but in this case the whirlwind pacing and characters dancing on and off screen after only a few lines works. It mirrors Abby's experience- thrust into a completely new life and environment after the traumatizing death of her husband. She barely has time to think and plan out her next steps, and doesn't know who she can actually trust in a town of strangers who all have their own agenda.

The production quality and cinematography is leagues beyond what we typically see on the CW. This show has more of an HBO/Showtime feel to it. Every little detail from the set to the costumes transport you straight to the old west. The town is small and dusty, smack dab in the middle of the plains. There's no out or escape for these characters, Independence is the last stop on the line. I was worried that the modern soundtrack would ruin the mood, but so far it works and has a very Baz Luhrman feel.

This is a Western that focuses on those who have never been center stage in the narrative, a refreshing twist on an old classic. Promising, and has me eager for more after only one episode. Worth checking out even if you wrote the CW off long ago.

WIndy pilot!

This new show is so very exciting. Loving all the authenticity they have included and cannot wait to follow the story of these incredible characters and how they are all going to interact as they work to solve the murder of Abby's husband. Hoyt is obviously a character with a lot of depth and a bit of a bad boy but with a good heart. Calian is all heart and torn between his Apache world and his friends. Kate is really a mystery and think her story has some potential twists and turns. Gus I think is trying to decide what is going on and working on the mystery. The new sheriff still appears to be the bad guy but is he? Mark Sheppard as Hagan is a really fun inclusion and look forward to finding out if he is good or bad.

Episode 10 min 20 - jet in the sky

there are many things showen with no care about history even the weapons them self that look to be but actually are 21 century made and from camera crew to lot of stuff that pulls you out of the story yaaaaa.....

it is a great story but its not at the level of 1883 and long story short other shows like yallowstone or 1923 are not either at the level of 1883

lets call it a western telenovela that can be nice if you binge it with a girl next to you otherwise i do not recomand this show because is good but just above grade B movies.

This show could have been magic if would have been payed more attention but its not.

I hope it can keep up the quality

I think that everyone involved with this has done a pretty great job. They way that it looks and is shot almost makes the show look like it came from a streaming service. The story is intriguing and the characters are all lively and are already getting fleshed out. It's not very often that i can feel attached to a character in a show so quickly, let alone attached to almost all of them. I can't wait wait to see where the story goes and where these characters will go in the future. I just hope that the show can keep up the quality and, if so, I think this could end up being a future classic western.

"Western" for kids.

If you like poor writing, worse acting and a "Western" story made for folks who need everything made really simple for them, then you really are in for one heck of a treat with this stinker.

Somehow the writers and cast have managed to produce a movie that makes all those black and white westerns of the 1950s, with their cardboard cut-out characters, simplistic plots and laughable dialogue, look like masterpieces. Don't waste a second of your life on this trash - if you want to see examples of the genre that are a million times better, sit yourself down and watch "Maverick", "Wagon Train" or even "Rin Tin Tin". Yeah, I know they're clunky and dated, but "Walker - Independence" really is MUCH worse...

Amazing start

What a great start for Walker Independance I loved it. Each character gave us a little look into who they are and I felt invested to find out more about them and what they will bring to the show going forward. The backdrop and costumes are great and reminds me of the old western shows and films. Definitely can't wait to see them all develop as the series goes on especiall Abby, Hoyt, Calian and Augustus . All the cast were great. It was nice seeing another version of Hoyt Rawlins and Matt Barr does it so well. It was nice to see a guest starring role for Mark Shepherd, hope to see him in future episodes. Great start to the series, more please.

Boring

I guess it is alright if you like westerns and soap operas combined but in reality it is too fake. Real western living wouldn't be anything like this show portrays. Every thing is too clean and tidy. The whole thing is somewhat boring. The murderous sheriff should have been called out at the beginning of the show. How could somebody really let that slide for so long? Seems like it is dumbed down for so reason or is it just that people like to live in some kind of fake reality. Comparing this to The English for instance really makes it look like a joke. There may have been a little too much violence in The English but it was a violent time in Western History.

This doesn't feel like a CW show at all!!

Walker Independence was a pleasant surprise and an immediate favorite for this season's line up of shows. The pilot definitely delivered both on introducing us to the key characters of the series and charming us to Independence itself, leaving the audience hooked for the next episode.

And I can't wait to know more about the characters! It's just so refreshing to see the diversity of that time in history reflected in the show itself. 'Inclusive Western' in a way that doesn't feel tokenism at all. These are the people that has always been part of the rich history of Independence and I'm glad to see them shine here.

Overall, this is fast-paced, lovable, and the whodunnit narrative certainly pairs well for this western. I say give this show a go and it might just exceed your expectations 'cause it definitely did mine.

Amazing!

I love period series, CW surprised me on this one!

The actors are amazing, the characters too, the scenery, the costumes, speechless.

I'm already excited to watch the first episode and I'm already rooting for them to do more seasons. It's all amazing, outside the series the actors are also cute, a positive environment.

Katherine looks amazing as always, I hope to see more and more of Justin, he is so cute and Matt is adorable too, Katie and Phil are pure love. AAAAAAH THEY ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Without a doubt, one of the best productions on the CW at the moment.

Thank you JP for providing us with this.
