The Sundance Film Festival is currently in full swing, giving industry professionals the chance to freeze their extremities while waiting to see a mid-budget dramedy about a family overcoming tragedy with quirkiness.
One of the most talked about movies at the festival so far is If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, a reportedly “harrowing” story of motherhood starring Rose Byrne and… Conan O’Brien?
Yes, the future Oscar host has a supporting role in the film which was written and directed by Mary Bronstein, and produced by Josh Safdie of “making you deeply uncomfortable with Safdie Brothers movies” fame.
While he’s not the star of the film, a lot of comedy fans are understandably most curious about Conan’s performance, considering that he’s not exactly known for drama (with the exception of all the Tonight Show drama from 2009).
The early word out of Sundance is that O’Brien is very good.

Roboshark is now streaming on Prime Video. If you have not heard of the movie, there is probably a good reason for that. If you have heard of it, why are you looking to return there again? Yes Roboshark is exactly what it sounds like, a SyFy special that comes from the “so bad its really bad” category that so many Shark-sploitation films fall into. Now, Prime Video are hosting the absurd movie, so anyone missing a dose of brainless, bad-cgi nonsense can get their fix.
First airing in 2015 on SyFy during Shark Week, Roboshark has an appearance by a shark that has been - surprise! - robotically enhanced after eating an alien probe. That’s right, it is not just a ludicrous shark movie, it is an alien movie too. The new Roboshark, which is now playing host to alien life, begins a path of destruction across Seattle...

Kerem Bürsin never planned to be a Turkish megastar.
Though he was born in Istanbul, he spent his formative years living internationally and attended high school in Texas, where he began acting in theater productions. He then set off for L.A., where he worked with the legendary Roger Corman, but still “kept coming across the matter of my nationality,” as he tells Variety.
“Some agents were telling me, ‘I have to change your name,'” he says. “I would ask them why, and they would say: ‘Because you don’t look Turkish, you don’t sound Turkish and you’re pretty much American. So it’s just not going to work.'”

Nowadays, marine creature horror movies more often tend to veer towards sharks, cephalopods, or a mix of both (looking at the Sharktopus franchise) for the nemesis of the narrative, completely overlooking much of the mythological or folklore-oriented possibilities the deep blue offers. In that context, Bad Fish deserves props for trying to do something with the legends of mermaids, as the movie tries to project a much more nefarious, monstrous side of the creatures of myth—contrary to their established, more popular conception as benevolent creatures. Additionally, the sprawling Oregon coastline adds to the enchanting beauty, which acts as the perfect backdrop to the narrative itself. However, the unwillingness on the makers’ part to explore a potentially intriguing creature lore, the off-putting execution, and the bad acting are some of the major drawbacks that ruin the overall experience.

Under Paris features a mythologized monster shark, but it is based on a real species - the shortfin mako. The film ties to Deep Blue Sea by using the shortfin mako as the main villain, a departure from the typical great white shark. While both films take liberties with the species, Under Paris uses the shark as a metaphor for environmental degradation.
Under Paris is one of the most outlandish and successful shark movies since Jaws, yet while its environmentally-tinged story marks it as an outlier in the genre, other details from the film reveal it has some surprising connections to older projects. As its title implies, Under Paris has the unique distinction of being set in mainland Europe in the middle of the French capital despite the difficulties this presents to its finned antagonist. While this would seem to place it in a similar strata to more deliberately over-the-top shark films,...

Netflix’s Seine-set shark thriller Under Paris could be taken off the platform within days of its release on June 5 due to legal proceedings brought by a writer-director who claims it was developed without his knowledge from an original idea he registered with France’s rights management body Sacd in 2011.
An initial hearing on June 14 will pass judgement on a legal request by the complainant’s lawyer for the film’s release to be suspended while a second lawsuit around accusations of parasitism makes its way through the courts.
Taking its cue from article 1240 of France’s Civil Code, parasitism is defined as one party following in the footsteps of another party’s efforts and know-how to benefit from their enterprise without seeking permission or making payment.

"No one will survive the bloodythirst beast!" Iqiyi in China has released on streaming a fun creature feature called Sharktopus, another of these dumb shark concepts. This Chinese remake is riffing on the 2010 SyFy channel movie also called Sharktopus, produced by Julie and Roger Corman as one of the first low budget shark-mania movies. This new version is already out for streaming in China, though no info yet on when it will show up in other countries. This film tells the story of Fan Jingya (starring Michelle Ye), who devoted herself to researching a cure for Motor Neuron Disease to save her son. However, her boss, Mr. Chen, used her research to create an Octoshark, a highly intelligent hybrid of octopuses and sharks. And this caused a disaster. Trapped on a cruise, Fan Jingya and her old flame, Lu Fei, have a battle of wits against the Octoshark. Also starring Luo Li-Qun,...

Before Sharknado took the world of pop culture by storm, producer Roger Corman unleashed Sharktopus in 2010, a Syfy original movie featuring a monster that was half shark and half octopus. The film ended up spawning two spinoff movies – Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda in 2014 and Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf in 2015 – and now a remake is on the way?!
Yes, Sharktopus is getting a Chinese remake here in 2023, thirteen years after Syfy unleashed their hybrid monster. And the official trailer has arrived this week. Check it out below.
Directed by Xu Shi-Xing and Hu Dong-Sheng, this particular take on Sharktopus looks to be heavily inspired by The Meg, which itself feels like a big budget Corman production.
No word yet on the remake’s international release strategy. Stay tuned for more.
Michelle Ye, Luo Li-Qun, Chen Wen-Jun and Lemon Li star in Sharktopus (2023).

Back in 2010, legendary producer Roger Corman and his wife/producing partner Julie Corman teamed up with the late director Declan O’Brien – who is best known for making several of the Wrong Turn sequels – to bring the world the creature feature Sharktopus, which is about exactly what it sounds like it would be about. A shark/octopus hybrid that goes on a man-eating binge. That film received two sequels, Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda and Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf… and now it has been given the remake treatment. In China! A trailer for the Chinese remake of Sharktopus can be seen in the embed above.

"The Meg," the movie that dared ask, "What if a shark ... was really big?", now has a sequel that asks, "What if there were even more really big sharks? And also, what if we made that boring?" A film destined for the August dumping pile, "Meg 2: The Trench" is notable because it comes from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, a director responsible for the disturbing masterpiece "Kill List," the J.G. Ballard adaptation "High Rise," and more. Wheatley is an excellent filmmaker, and the idea of giving him a blockbuster budget to make a giant shark movie is enticing, at least on paper. Sadly, Wheatley can't work his magic here, as he's saddled with a clunky, dull, low-energy script by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Just how do you make a movie about gigantic prehistoric sharks chomping on modern-day humans so dull? It's kind of impressive.

The unknown depths of the sea have always fascinated humanity and appealed to us, both through their beauty and terror. Evoking this fear of the unknown, Steven Spielberg revolutionized the creature horror genre forever through his first blockbuster hit, Jaws (1975). Since then, a plethora of imitative works have been released, along with three mediocre sequels, never quite able to emulate the dread ever again. However, the astronomical success of Jaws resulted in studios indulging in a really weird obsession with shark-related action movies ever since, which culminated in abominations like Sharknado and Sharktopus, which might be some of the worst crimes done to the species aside from human exploitation.

We are absolutely fascinated by sharks. Discovery's 35th Shark Week kicked off on July 23rd, hosted by none other than Aquaman Jason Momoa himself. Not just sharks in real life, either. No, we love them on screen, and we like them schlocky. Sharknado, Deep Blue Sea, Sand Sharks, 6-Headed Shark Attack, Sharktopus. And we are mere days away from the latest schlock-shark extravaganza, Meg 2: The Trench, which appears to have embraced its campiness wholeheartedly, as evidenced by the darkly humorous trailer for the film. Plus, Shudder make a whole documentary about this very topic called Sharksploitation which you can watch on the horror streamer now.

Who doesn't love a good shark movie? Ever since the release of Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic, Jaws, audiences have been fascinated with shark movies. It's a subgenre that has been around for nearly 100 years (since 1936's White Death), but it was Jaws that allowed the shark movies to really take off and garner fans.
Since then, we have seen a variety of fantastic, compelling, bonkers, fun, and utterly ridiculous shark movies that all gain an incredible amount of success, despite their quality. From Deep Blue Sea and Sharktopus to The Reef and The Shallows, all the way to the Sharknado movies and even Jaws rip-offs like Piranha 3D, there is no denying that shark movies are a ton of fun, and no matter how weird or bonkers the premise, audiences are always drawn back for more.

Shark attack movies, perhaps the largest sect of the animal horror subgenre, are one of the strangest groups of films in cinema history. On one end of the spectrum is Jaws, the original blockbuster often considered one of the best films ever made. On the other end is the never-ending parade of low-budget shark movies the internet adores, like Sharknado and Sharktopus. Between those two poles are the mainstream, non-Jaws films that need to strike a balance between the two. Whereas some films manage to pull off this feat—Deep Blue Sea and The Shallows are probably the best examples—others struggle to find a way to take their aquatic horror seriously without veering into ridiculousness.

Declan O’Brien, a writer, producer and director who specialized in horror fare with credits including three sequels in the Wrong Turn franchise, died on February 16 at age 56.
Born in 1965, O’Brien knew from a young age that he would be involved in film. He left for California from Rochester, NY to become an actor. When that didn’t work out, he decided to go to college and get a film degree and graduated from California State Polytechnic University at Pomona. He was able to turn that into a full-time profession and became a producer, writer, and director for film and television domestically and internationally.

Ever since Steven Spielberg’s career-launching blockbuster “Jaws” broke out in 1975, the world’s obsession with sharks has not slackened. Evidence of this is the glut of films – and TV series – about the much-maligned and misunderstood predator.
“The movie ‘Jaws’ had a massive impact on me becoming a filmmaker, and it began my lifelong fascination with sharks,” said director-producer Stephen Scarlata whose documentary “Sharksploitation” participates in the Frontières co-production market, organized by the Fantasia International Film Festival in tandem with Cannes’ Marché du Film.
Scarlata (“Jodorowsky’s Dune”) and his team recently secured an all-important interview with marine and environmental conservation advocate Wendy Benchley, who was married to late “Jaws” author Peter Benchley.
Benchley is known to have expressed his deep regret about the characterization of the shark in his bestselling novel that Spielberg adapted. “There is no such thing as a rogue shark which develops a taste for human flesh.

Back in June, when Jaws celebrated its 45th anniversary, film lovers everywhere waxed poetic about the influence of this incredible film. It’s true that Jaws has loomed large in our culture and continues to cut a powerful figure in film history. Jaws was the film that changed how movies are marketed. It inspired countless filmmakers, introduced new ways of shooting a film, and gave rise to sharks as a horror genre in and of themselves. The icon status of Jaws simply cannot be overstated.
All things considered, in its 45 years Jaws has occupied a place of cultural significance beyond how it functions as cinema. When considering Jaws in 2020, it’s apparent that the film has persisted as a highly political piece, in addition to being a cinematic revolutionary. Jaws has managed to stick in our minds for reasons that are totally external to the film itself. It has become...

Growing up action movies were, for me, second only to horror flicks as my go to genre. I used to scour the pages of Impact for news on the latest films and then pre-order the VHS at my local video shop – because yes, back in the day you could actually pre-order a video rental and I Always had to be first to rent my most-anticipated flicks! I mention this only because it was back in that era that the action movie star was king. Starting out with the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, the VHS era gave birth to a myriad of action movie superstars: guys like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Jeff Speakman, Jeff Wincott and the queen of action films Cynthia Rothrock… all of whom carved out careers in what were – for the most part – direct to video films.

Sharks are a popular commodity when it comes to horror movies. True, they may not be blowing up the box office, but if your film features a shark prominently, then chances are it’ll probably do pretty decent business and manage to find an audience. I mean, even Sharktopus has its fans.
If you’re thirsty for more though and find yourself growing impatient as you await The Meg 2, you’ll be happy to know that Deep Blue Sea 3 is headed our way and will be with us on July 28th. Zombie Tidal Wave, a new Syfy original movie starring and produced by Ian Ziering (Sharknado), is set to premiere as part of Syfy’s shark-themed Off The Deep End weekend, Saturday, August 17 at 9 Pm.
The movie is the first project under the production pact between Ian Ziering’s I.Man Productions and Darby Parker’s Stronghold Entertainment. The feature stars Ziering and was directed by Ziering’s frequent collaborator Anthony C. Ferrante who helmed all six of Ziering’s Sharknado‘s film installments.
Ziering and Parker see this as the first of many installments where we follow lead Hunter Shaw (Ziering) as he contends with the ocean-borne outbreak which threatens his seaside island community, the rogue, veteran sailor leading a disparate group of locals to uncover the origins of the undead pandemic while battling the growing horde of infected before it can reach the mainland.

Back in 1975, Jaws made moviegoers afraid to go in the water. Then, in 2013, Sharknado came along and no doubt forced a small percentage of the population to fear the outdoors as a whole, lest a rogue shark come by and slaughter them on their front lawn.
As ridiculous as that may sound, the pop culture phenomenon has spawned four sequels, each upping the level of absurdity and featuring a boatload of unexpected celebrity cameos, with everyone from weatherman extraordinaire Al Roker to Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor making appearances. Really, it leaves little room to wonder why the franchise has become the crown jewel in the SyFy network’s proud line of original B-movies, which also includes such gems as Sharktopus and, of course, the timeless classic Mega Croc vs. Gatoroid.

Ever since Jaws caused moviegoers to be afraid of going back into the water in 1975, the concept of rampaging sharks has been a staple in the horror, thriller and science fiction genres, often blurring the lines between them. And while the topic of today’s discussion isn’t nearly as over the top as the likes of Sharknado, Sharktopus and Ghost Shark, it sure has been generating its share of online buzz as of late.
We are, of course, talking about The Meg. In it, “a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside.
With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes...

When a rogue scientist discovers an immense egg in the dark recesses of a rainforest he thinks hes stumbled across his fame and fortune. But little does he know that it belongs to a terrifying hybrid monster, known only as the Piranhaconda (a moniker only mentioned once in the Entire film and dismissed as a stupid name!). Soon the beast is on the loose, hunting for its unborn child, rampaging through the country and destroying everything in its path in a mass of CGI-enhanced gory-glory.
A killer-creature B-movie from the Roger Corman staple, Piranhaconda is yet another made for Syfy TV movie suprisingly this one comes from director Jim Wynorski, who is well-known in the horror community for successfully mixing T&A and horror.

By now you probably all know I have a soft spot for ridiculous shark movies, be they from Roger Corman, The Asylum, Syfy or anyone else… Which is why I always Have to subject myself to whatever treasures this disparate genre provide. Be it a Zombie Shark, Ghost Shark, Sharknado, Sharktopus, a 3-Head Shark, a Swamp Shark etc., etc…. whatever!?!
This time round we’ve got killer sharks and an environmental message in Ice Sharks. A Syfy channel originjal movie from The Asylum (so its a low-budget double-header) which sees a team of expert scientists are studying the effects of climate change on marine life at a research station deep in the Arctic. Suddenly, out of nowhere, hell breaks loose when a new breed of aggressive, ravenous sharks suddenly crack through...

'Wait a minute! You're telling me there's a movie coming that stars both Dave Bautista and Jean-Claude Van Damme?' Yes, sucka! And that movie is Kickboxer: Vengeance! After releasing an exciting new trailer earlier in the week, Rlj Entertainment has now released a brand new poster, which arrives as a real kick to the face. The movie brings Van Damme back to the franchise that made him an international superstar. But the action is hotter and the stakes are a lot higher this time around.
Cat Run and Blue Crush director John Stockwell is behind this new action epic. Like the original, it follows brothers Eric and Kurt Sloan, descendants of a well-known Venice, California-based family of martial artists. Kurt has always been in older brother Eric's shadow as he lacks the instincts needed to become a champion. But when Kurt witnesses the merciless murder of his brother at...

If you thought it was only studios like The Asylum who were cranking out giant sea creature flicks for Syfy you’d be completely wrong – Roger Corman and his New Horizon Pictures are still producing the kind of cheap and cheerful monster movies that Corman made his name with to this day. Only unlike The Asylum, Corman and co. don’t seem to want to keep to just giant monsters… Instead they’ve cross-bred their monsters as time has gone on – no longer are they satisfied with plain-old Supergator, their first giant creature flick; nope they’ve brought us the crazy combos of Dinoshark, Dinocroc (who took on Supergator in 2010), Piranhaconda; and their craziest giant killer creature combination, Sharktopus.

If you thought Dolph Lundgren's Kindergarten Cop sequel was an insane idea, wait until you see the trailer for Shark Lake.
The indie horror movie posits the blood-curdling scenario of a family of sharks terrorising California's Lake Tahoe. Yes, sharks in a lake.
Of course, the only man capable of taking these vicious monsters down is the former Punisher himself Dolph Lundgren – except maybe he put the sharks in the lake to begin with?!
Thankfully, Dolph's sidekick is actress Sara Malakul Lane – who has a bit of experience in this field thanks to her work on Sharktopus.
Try not to think about this one too hard – just watch the trailer above and behold its epic glory.
If you're brave enough to venture into shark-infested fresh water, Shark Lake opens today (October 2) in the Us.

Seminal schlockmeister Roger Corman may be 89 years old, but you wouldn't know it from his output. Though the B-movie king hasn't directed a film since his ill-fated adaptation of Brian Aldiss's Frankenstein Unbound in 1990, he still produces knowingly goofy SyFy monster films like Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf and the upcoming Sharktopus vs. Mermantula. Last Saturday, Corman presented three of his films (Man With X-Ray Eyes, Tomb of Ligeia, and Bucket of Blood) at the Anthology Film Archives's ongoing retrospective of movies produced and distributed by American International Pictures (Aip). Vulture caught up with him to talk exploding helicopters, pteracuda-fighting sharktopi, and the future of movie-watching. One film that Anthology Film Archives is surprisingly not showing in its Aip retrospective is The Wild Angels. That film went on to influence Columbia, with Easy Rider seeming to be its attempt at replicating The Wild Angels' success. Do you think people at...

Writer-director Ben Cresciman's second feature, Sun Choke, premiered at the Stanley Film Festival this weekend. It's a film that's not easy to describe: imagine a fever dream sprung from the mind of an unreliable narrator that is both a murderer, an epileptic, and figures somewhere on the autism or Asperger's spectrum, and you get Sun Choke. Starring Sarah Hagan (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Freaks and Geeks), Barbara Crampton (You're Next, Re-Animator), and Sara Malakul Lane (12/12/12, Sharktopus), Sun Choke takes place in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Hagan's Janie is being tenuously led back to health by Crampton's Irma while her father stays overseas for months working. We see a few flashbacks involving what looks to be a murder scene at home as well as a...

The third installment in the so-silly-it's-awesome "Sharknado" series now has its final lineup and is getting a special premiere week slate of programming, which Syfy announced on Thursday.

Joining them this time around is original "Sharknado" star Cassie Scerbo (who sat out last summer's "Sharknado 2: The Second One"), along with some new faces: David Hasselhoff (playing Fin's father, Gil), Bo Derek (April's mother, May), Ryan Newman (taking over the part of April and Fin's daughter, Claudia Shepard, from original star and current "Nashville" cast member Aubrey Peeples), and Jack Griffo (Claudia's friend, Billy).

What will horror fans be watching this Christmas? Nick's got some ideas
The phrase “camp as Christmas” seems the only appropriate way to describe this month’s festive special as we take a look at the Blu-ray release of six Edgar Allan Poe adaptations combining the formidable talents of the great Vincent Price and the glorious “King of B-Movies”, Roger Corman.
Filmed relatively early in Corman’s incredibly prolific sixty-year career (over 400 movies produced, more than fifty films directed and he’s even starred in thirty-odd to boot!), this month’s Six Gothic Tales boxset covers all but one of his and Price’s early 60s Poe-themed Aip productions, from the morose The Fall Of The House Of Usher right through to 1964’s UK-based The Tomb Of Ligeia.
The first thing to note is the difficulty in believing the man responsible for Inhumanoid, Subliminal Seduction and the upcoming Sharktopus...

From legendary producer Roger Corman, the director of Dinoshark, and the screenwriter of Sharktopus comes Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader, and the Epix original movie is available Now on various VOD platforms.
Kevin O’Neill directs. Former Georgia Teen USA 2007 Jena Sims stars as Cassie Stratford, an aspiring college cheerleader who consumes an experimental drug that grants her beauty and enough athletic ability to make the cheer squad. It also has a very unfortunate side effect that you should be able to ascertain from the film’s title.
Sean Young (Blade Runner) appears as Cassie’s mom, and Ted Raimi (“Xena: Warrior Princess”) plays a professor. Mary Woronov (Death Race 2000), Ryan Merriman (“Pretty Little Liars”), and Treat Williams (Deep Rising) also appear in this cheerily campy Corman creation.

We have him to thank for The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Trip, Bloody Mama and a half-dozen Poe adaptations. His producer credits include Piranha, Boxcar Bertha, TNT Jackson, Rock 'n' Roll High School and Sharktopus. (Perhaps best to disregard that last one.) He's notorious for shooting movies on little money in less than a week using sets from other films he'd just completed. Actors/filmmakers who worked on their earliest movies with him include Jack Nicholson, Dick Miller (pictured above in A Bucket of Blood), Robert Towne, John Sayles, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante and Martin Scorsese. Roger Corman has 56 director credits and 409 producer credits on IMDb, and he's still producing.
And Austin Film Society programmer Lars Nilsen had to narrow it down to four features -- plus a bonus documentary on Dick Miller -- for the latest Afs Arthouse series: "Films of Roger Corman." The series, screening Fridays and Sundays at the Marchesa,...

If you survived last night’s Sharknado sequel, don’t leave your storm room just yet – there are more deadly sea monsters on the horizon. Roger Corman is set to unleash the imaginatively titled Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda: A Love Story onto unsuspecting Syfy audiences this Saturday night – and we’ve got some nifty artwork to share from what promises to be the most romantic movie about genetically modified sea creatures with a taste for human flesh released this year. In the new film, the offspring of Sharktopus goes fin-to-fin with the Pteracuda – which is just what the name describes: a half-barracuda, half-pterodactyl hybrid that’s all business. Robert Carradine and Katie Savoy star in the new film, but both have been upstaged by an...

Sharknado 2 seems to be getting all the attention these days when it comes to campy Syfy originals, but it isn't the only shclock on the block. Premiering just a few days after Sharknado we will be treated to another Roger Corman mashup movie.
Shartopus vs. Pteracuda (inspired by true events according to the poster) tells the story of a captive Sharktopus which must be unleashed to fight yet another science experiment gone wrong: the half-Pterodactyl, half-Barracuda.
The movie also boasts a comeo by Conan O'Brien and he has just made a clip from his performance available.
Fair warning, this is what one would call a Huge Spoiler. if that concerns you, you may want to skip the clip.

It looks like Conan O'Brien has found the perfect movie to showcase his acting skills. During Wednesday's episode, O'Brien showed his complete cameo from “Sharktopus Vs. Ptercauda,” the Roger Corman schlockfest that will be airing on SyFy on August 2. In it he plays himself, or at least the jokey, overconfident version of himself, complete with ascot and pretty assistant. In the amazing 90-second cameo, O'Brien manages to not only get a couple of laughs, but also acts like a jerk as a he berates a bunch of volleyball-playing dudes bothering him nearby.
