Andreas Kleinert’s Dear Thomas has swept the German Film Awards with nine wins including best film, director and actor Albrecht Schuch.

The awards, known as the Lolas, were handed out during a gala ceremony attended by 1,700 guests at Berlin’s Palais am Funkturm on Friday (June 24).

Dear Thomas, a black-and-white historical biopic of East German author and filmmaker Thomas Brasch, picked up the Golden Lola for best film and won further awards for best director, screenplay, actor, production design, costume design, supporting actress, cinematography and editing.

If there was one noticeable trend at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival it was the use of black-and-white film. It proved a winner for experimental biopic Dear Thomas in the Official Competition and for Other Cannibals, which won Best First Feature. But there was an award for most playful use of monochrome, it would go to Emre Erdogdu for his breezy dive into the life of drug dealer Yilmaz (Halil Babür) whose fix of choice is the admiration of others. Kore-eda’s ‘Air Doll’ Gets First U.S. Release

Exclusive: New York-based distributor Dekanalog has picked up Japanese pic Air Doll, directed by Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda, and will give the film its first U.S. release. Released in Japan in 2009, the film follows an inflatable sex doll who finds that she has grown consciousness and a heart. Wandering Tokyo, she discovers the innate complexities of being human, including the heartbreak of loneliness. The deal was overseen by sales agent Gabrielle Rozing at Fortissimo Films and George Schmalz of Dekanalog. The picture will be released in U.S. cinemas and on VOD in early 2022.

The disruption of events over the past two years might have been the reset Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Poff) needed for its 25th edition.
