A good company at night

Slumber Party Massacre has this interesting idea; "reimagining" the original while trying to subvert the genre's clichés. Well, it fails. At least not too miserably, since its confusion at being either satire or parody will give you a good laugh or two.

It's sleazy not because it has TV-Movie quality written all over it, but because its idea was done half-baked. While not as smart as it thinks it is, nevertheless is a much better film than the latest Black Christmas.

Entertaining, self aware flick..

..that tries a little to hard to with wink wink nudge nudge. A little more subtlety woud have helped. Overall I enjoyed this one and had a little giggle here and there. If you know your horror tropes and like them to be a little bit twisted around here and there while, you as the viewer, aswell as the film makers, are aware of the fact that it's done for fun, give this one a go. Just don't expect a serious Horror flick, this isn't one.

Fun reboot that brings the original intent

This is definitely more of a reboot than a remake. It has a good setup and includes myriad homages to the original and even its wacky sequel.

The intent of the OG to satire the slasher and bring out strong female characters was somewhat subverted by producer Roger Corman (while still creating a very progressive slasher for its time). Well, this one goes for that concept full bore and I feel it achieves the goal.

There are a number of very funny scenes, including one with the guys next door having a half naked pillow fight & the girls stepping in to protect them. There's also a hilarious shower scene that just has to be seen to be believed. Sometimes things are a little too "on the nose" but it's still very fun. Oh, and the kills are pretty good too.

This reboot was a ton of fun.

Feels Like a Sequel

A bunch of teenage girls go on vacation at the spot where another bunch of teenage girls were killed by driller killer, Russ Thorne, in the 90's and discover that he's still out there, looking for fresh blood to spill.

Though billed as a reboot, Slumber Party Massacre could just as easily be another sequel in the original franchise. Director Danishka Esterhazy paces the film well with a good amount of comedy and horror. The script has a few twists and surprises up its sleeve and turns the tables where they needed to be.

Not sure why this movie was made

I suppose the director, whom I understand is a female feminist, wanted to combat the exploitation of women in movies by exploiting men. Not sure how or why that tactic makes sense. Bottom line, the movie is not very good, regardless of who's being exploited. I don't watch movies for political statements, I watch them to be entertained. This movie didn't entertain me.

2/10- poorly made movie on all levels.

Puts the auger in slaughter.

The days of big-breasted, scantily clad scream queens are over. This being 2021, bimbos are no longer acceptable, but himbos are apparently still fair game: the only nudity in Slumber Party Massacre '21 is from a load of buff guys (this includes a shirtless pillow fight and, yes, a shower scene!), while the clever, tough and resourceful characters are all female. It's not so much gender equality as it is total gender reversal. Thankfully, it's all knowingly daft and obviously tongue-in-cheek, director Danishka Esterhazy having fun tipping the scales in favour of the fairer sex (two of the male characters are so disposable they are called Guy 1 and Guy 2).

The film sees pals Dana (Hannah Gonera), Maeve (Frances Sholto-Douglas), Breanie (Alex McGregor) and Ashley (Reze-Tiana Wessels) celebrating graduation by hiring a cabin for a weekend of partying; crashing the fun is Alix (Mila Rayne), younger sister of one of the girls (can't recall which one). However, while driving to the retreat, the girls experience car trouble and have to spend the night at an old lakeside house, not far from where four girls were murdered back in '93 by drill-wielding psycho Russ Thorn (Rob van Vuuren). No sooner have the girls slipped into their PJs than up pops Russ, oversized phallic drill in hand; what he doesn't realise is that the girls have come prepared...

Esterhazy piles on the gore, with a quite a few graphic kills, but never takes things seriously enough to make it truly horrifying. The result is relatively entertaining inconsequential nonsense that requires little thought from the viewer and, as such, should appeal to most fans of the original movie (except the ones hoping for boobs); it certainly entertained me more than the big slasher movie of the year, Halloween Kills, which failed on so many levels.

More wokiewood nonsense destroying a classic with a remake

I'm not sure who Danishka Esterhazy is but I hope I'm never forced to watch another movie remake she destroys with her wokiewood stupidity. This was an 80's slasher film classic and hit all the marks back then. When did people, especially this "director", forget movies are spoused to be fun and don't have to drive every single political agenda at the DNC convention.

This was a sad, sad attempt at a remake of a cult classic trilogy. I'm sure the next slasher movie she destroys will feature men pretending to be women instead of actual women. I hope the next time I see Danishka Esterhazy she looks at me and says "Hi, welcome to walmart" she may be qualified for that, she sure isn't a director.

upside down twist

It's 1993. Four girls are having a slumber party in a cabin. Chad is Trish's jealous ex. All of them are attacked by the drill-welding killer, Russ Thorne. Trish is the sole survivor. It's present day. Dana leaves her overprotective mother and joins her friends on a girls weekend. Their car breaks down and they end up back to where the attack originally occurred.

It starts as a standard exploitation horror with a bit of comedy but it gets annoying as the standard becomes predictable. Then comes the shocking twist. It turns the whole movie upside down. I love the idea but not always the execution. It's jumping over the fine line to make fun of the original movies. Maybe a bit of subtlety would be more compelling. For example, Guy 1 and Guy 2 could simply be Chad 1 and Chad 2. It's possible to have two Chads in the same friends group. By doing the two Guys, the movie stops existing in the real world. This world isn't that real to begin with. Finally, there is the last act. The girls are being too girlie. There is something obvious. It keeps going on and on. It's better to cut it short. All in all, this is more imaginative and better made than the original.

Yeah the original was hokey, but you could tell that they at least tried their best to make the movie. This film isn't a remake. It's more of a Scary Movie type parody that has the most ridiculous story, acting, etc. Post production quality of the film is the only thing going for it.

This was great!!

I'm a fan of the first 3 Slumber Party Massacre movies and not so much a fan of remakes... I thought the trailer for this one looked pretty good so I decided to watch it and I'm so glad I did!

This is more like a sequel and took things in a different direction rather than try to remake the first one. The killer did such a great job, he looked and acted exactly like the original killer. It's a highly enjoyable never boring horror/comedy!

Meh nothing exciting, just a cash grab

Cast was boring and unenthusiastic half the time, until near the end of the film. Almost walked out on the film because of how boring it was, seemed to be until an hour in when it finally got interesting or when stuff started to happen.

Sound was too loud at times where you couldn't even hear the characters. For example, at "suspenseful" parts the sound would be loud but then the dialogue would be quiet.

A lot of the story seemed to never be mentioned or brought up again. Half the time I was confused as to what happened here or why this happened.

I guess this movie does bring a twist on the whole slasher genre but they way the director, writer, whoever it was did a poor job on doing it.

This "reboot" did have some good references to the original trilogy, i'll give them that.

If you wanna watch this movie as a thriller/horror, I suggest skipping this movie and to watch a different one. I was laughing more times than feeling anxious about anything. Should be labeled as a comedy, almost like the Scary Movie series but not as comedic.

Overall, movie just wasn't good or enjoyable to watch as the original or other reboots titles from different movies. Save your time and or money, unless you want to get a good laugh at this movie.

Rainbow slasher

I do not understand why nowadays slashers are so bad. It should be easier to create something new, risky and interesting from time to time.

First, this abomination tries hard to change the rules of old great slashers like the original one. Here we have a bunch of men that act like women in the 80's. Why? Also, several women that acted like men in the 80's , including a feminist agenda here. Terrible.

Second, the storyline and the script here are just miserable. A shame and embarrassing. Even for a B-slasher you need a convincing excuse to kill. Here everything looked damb.

So, overall one of the worst slashers I've ever watched. And I watched more than 500 hundred.

Okay, so you've got a large power tool... That don't impress me much!

Today it isn't nearly as easy anymore to remake a slasher classic from the 70s or 80s than it was, say, in the early 2000s. I bet you also know why. These days nothing can be offensive or provocative anymore, and everything must be so-called Woke. Beautiful blond women cannot be portrayed as dumb or as sex-objects anymore. Vicious killers aren't allowed to be physically deformed or mentally handicapped anymore. People of different color or race can't be murdered anymore, or at least not as the first victims. Let it just so happen that all of these were "trademarks" of the slasher. Why bother to make anymore remakes then?

Luckily, within every generation of horror directors and writers, there are a few gifted prodigies that find workarounds. And some people are even so bright and gifted that they manage to create an enjoyable blood-soaked slasher AND a playfully clever parody at the same time! For their re-imaging of the 1982 semi-classic "Slumber Party Massacre" (which already was sort of a feminist slasher, as it was directed by a woman), writer Suzanne Keilly and director Danishka Esterhazy masterfully depart from all the original slasher clichés and turn them upside down. The hot young girls are utmost lethal and relentless, while the males are disposable eye-candy, and the killer is an insignificant side-character!

"Slumber Party Massacre" can still be considered as an old-fashioned slasher, plentiful of gory kills and inventive murdering methods, but it's also an admirably slick and tongue-in-cheek spoof. The scenes with the hysterically pillow-fighting and gratuitously showering boys are formidable, and the simple fact that two of them are so redundant they are simply named Guy 1 and Guy 2 is downright brilliant. Oh, and one extra point for the (albeit predictable) "Friday the 13th" homage during the climax.

Awful stick to the original

Words can not explain how bad this movie was. Terrible acting. Couldn't tell if was trying to be a comedy or horror. As another review said total cash grab. Sy fy can do better than dragging a classic title through this mess.

Solid movie. For the first 20-30min I was wondering why so many gave it a positive review.

But then it got going and ended up being a pretty good movie. Don't judge until you're at least half way through or you'll be missing out.

Defeated my expectations

As a comedy horror SPM was hilarious and a little tense at times. The intro took us back to the 90's era slasher on a lake where some girls met their doom to the driller killer then we are straight into the present. The pacing, directing, lighting, music, blood effects, and all the things we like that show good production was present and the performances were spot on. Seeing Rob Van Vuuren (Tremors: Cold Day in Hell) as the driller killer was absolutely worth the watch. The plot had some nice twists but I won't go into that because spoilers. Lots of kills, my favorite was the head drill with the guitar wire entanglement. Nuff said, go watch.

Not a reboot, but a pamphlet

"Slumber Party Massacre" is a slasher from the minds of Amy Holden Jones and Rita Mae Brown, which draws more attention than the story itself, which consists of yet another 1980s slasher, with a misogynistic maniac on the loose, after girls very comfortable with their bodies. The weapon chosen to kill and the maniac's peculiarities give the viewer the necessary tips to understand the point that the original authors wanted to address.

What happens with this new version commissioned by the SYFY channel is the result of the new authors' inability to insert into the story the questions they supposedly intend to raise. This is not a problem exclusive to Danishka Esterhazy or Suzanne Keilly, it is a recurring problem in countless current titles, occurring more significantly in remake and reboot attempts.

The first half begins with a past cliffhanger, moves towards a girls' weekend, reveals a revenge plot... Nothing develops and, from the second half on wards, male characters appear to suggest a parody regarding female objectification, observed in the slasher genre... Nothing develops either... Not even male nudity, which is delivered in an embarrassed and prudish way, since the idea was to subvert the cliché... And the maniac is completely sidelined...

There is a corrective fever taking over new productions that compels new authors to revisit well-known titles from the past to correct, remodel and exacerbate their fashionable sociopolitical comments.

They are unable to insert what they want to express through their characters, in the course of a story. No, the characters just wander from one scene to the next, reproducing the catchphrases that flood social media. So nothing really develops in this new "Slumber Party Massacre." In fact, it is just another opportunity to exhaust the superficial maxims of identity empowerment a little more, while the material lacks boldness and substance.

Hilarious - scream meets the original SPM

Very funny and self aware. Basically like a mashup of scream and the original slumber party flick. Knows what it's doing and does it great.

Just be sure to watch the unedited cut that's on streaming or disc. The one on TV is cut up and the gore is weak. The uncut version is much more brutal. Almost entirely practical effects too!

Also tons of references to the first 3 if you're familiar with them! Just an overall very fun flick with lots of meta commentary about horror and slashers like this.

Highly recommended!

Fun little slasher remake

I had so much much fun watching this one. It's not to be taken serious and you can see everyone who took part in it had fun making it. The actors, although playing tongue in cheek roles, were good, believable and actually likeable. The story moves forward and actually has something new to offer. If you compare this low budget outing to the high profile Halloween Kills, it's painfully the superior movie.

Looking forward to next movie of this director.

A Sleepover You'll Wish You Slept Through

Never have I ever written a review on IMDB, let alone felt so compelled to, but this is LITERALLY THEE worst movie I have ever seen in my ENTIRE life. Bless the actors & actresses, I have nothing against them, but this is a dreadful descent into cinematic chaos. This movie defies all expectations, not by delivering spine-chilling scares, but by showcasing a masterclass in cinematic ineptitude. From the laughably thin plot to the wooden performances, every aspect of this movie screams disaster. Save yourself the agony of enduring this travesty-it's a cinematic nightmare you'll wish you could erase from memory.
