Carnival in Rio

Art Gilmore narrates this trip to Rio De Janeiro for Carnival, shot by Andre De La Varre.

De La Varre began with a camera and a steamer ticket. He hooked up with travelogue pioneer Burton Holmes, and by 1933, he was directing, producing, and shooting the first of more than 120 travelogues. In the 1930s, he typically released his movies through Columbia in the United States, but in the 1950s, with Technicolor now within his budget, his works went through Warner Brothers, who typically re-edited them and added a different narrator. He released his last film in 1971, and died in 1987, aged 84.

He loved to shoot architecture and crowds. There isn't much architecture here, but there are some fantastically costumed crowds!

It shows landscapes of Rio de Janeiro, The Wonder City, gateway to Brazil and the most beautiful city of the world; the arrival of tourists in "strong silver wings" in a modern airport (of 1955); President Getúlio Vargas; scenes of the street carnival in the heart of the city, with dancing teams and mask groups wearing costumes and playing and singing samba, showing the spirit of the "cariocas" (people born in the city of Rio de Janeiro); the great societies (how the carnival clubs that come to the parade with allegoric cars were called); and the carnival balls where the high-society celebrate with the King and the Queen, drinking champagne and dancing with lots of joy. In addition, the soundtrack presents carnival songs of 1955.

This short is a must-see for "cariocas", Brazilians and lovers of documentaries. My vote is ten.
