Another attempt to take Moliere's classic out of the stage .It was already made in 1969 in a version featuring Michel Serrault as Monsieur Jourdain (the best of these "shot on location "Bourgeois Gentilhomme" )and in 1982 by Roger Coggio.It's pleasant enough to hear all the lines you know by heart since junior high school in different places,in the luxury rooms of the bourgeois's desirable mansion , in the stable , in the garden or under the Grand Turc's tent.

Christian De Challonge made some interesting movies such as " L'Alliance" and "Le Bel Ete Quatorze";his MTV take on Moliere's play is rather nice,even if it does not bring anything new.Gerard Jourd'Hui removed one scene or two (notably the one in which Covielle explains his stratagem to Dorante),replaced one word (" Truchement","Prérogatives" ) with another ("Interprète" ,"Privilèges" ).

Christian Clavier (who played Asterix) gives a rather restrained but effective performance (notably in the scene he tells his wife he is a "Mammamouchi" ).
