There's very little to this one that's worthwhile. The best feature here is the arthouse sensibilities present which will easily be a personal preference for some out there regardless if they're the best feature or not. A dialogue-free music video that switches up between shaded grey or vibrant color depending on whether or not the scene in question is happening or if the heroine is being subjected to horrifying visions, the stylistic presentation here is quite striking and results in plenty of bizarre moments. Relying on this approach to tell the story makes for a unique aesthetic where the series of bizarre visuals featured here slowly start to tell the story being presented where her stressed mental state being tormented by a string of bizarre confrontations involving the various vampiric beings mutilating themselves or torturing others resulting in a slew of grotesque skits filled with decent indie gore or bloodshed. Even still, there's a lot off about this one. As mentioned, the film's whole approach will be a massive hurdle to overcome most might not be able to accomplish where the arthouse, near-experimental vibes presented here won't make for the most easy-going means of accessibility. Despite the copious nudity and graphic visuals, not having dialogue at all makes this one incredibly difficult to understand if not impossible to make out what's going on. Since we don't know who any of these characters are, what these figures engaging in occult rituals are, or what the purpose behind it all means, it boils down to watching a string of music video sequences as the blaring Goth rock n the background serves as an accompaniment to what's going on. The other big issue here is the mindlessly unnecessary padding for a film that's barely long enough for a genuine feature-length film. Clocking in as long as it does is mainly due to a string of excessively padded-out sequences where the vampires or other demons repeat what's going on for minutes on end when it has no purpose for going that long. It's even worse because there's no dialogue to explain what's happening so it just features them repeating things to get to a full running time, most notably the eye-gouging sequence where the figures repeat the process twice each just so that the film has more carnage and bloodshed with the repeated actions. This is just part of the problem with the repeated and drawn-out pacing here which will probably be the most egregious aspect here turning people off long before any of the other issues come into play and holding it back the most.
Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Full Nudity.
But as it turned out, I was in for an avantgarde artsy gothic movie that proved to be anything but interesting. In fact, I only managed to endure 25 minutes of the ordeal, then I was ready to pluck my eyes out and stuff my ears with cotton.
This movie had absolutely nothing alluring or interesting to offer in terms of a properly interesting and captivating storyline. It felt like a random tirade of randomly filmed sequences that writer Ramiro Giroldo and director Larissa Anzoategui just came up with and put together in no sequenced order to make a movie. And it didn't help that the movie had no dialogue, and there was just one song played after another, back to back.
The 25 minutes I endure were painstakingly slow paced and uneventful, and it just utterly made me give up on the movie and have zero interest in continuing on, because nothing appealed to the in "Domina Nocturna".
This is definitely one of the most boring movies I have stumbled upon. And I can in all honesty say that I am not returning to give this movie a second chance, because I just simply have absolutely no interest in the utter lack of a coherent and entertaining storyline that was "Domina Nocturna". And I can't recommend that you waste your time, money or effort on this movie.
My rating of "Domina Nocturna" lands on a mere one out of ten stars. This was truly an unfathomably boring excuse of a movie.
She's on a bridge, she's in some dungeon, you name it she wanders and meets what are supposed to be a bunch of female vampires and some Satanists.
There is no dialog whatsoever in this movie. Just a goth girl wandering. Hard to say how good or bad the acting is because no one acts. They just wander.
I think this is an all girl cast because i dont remember any dudes and the girls have some pretty nice nudity going on as they wander, but the movie is horrible. It reminds me of Kenneth Anger's Lucifer Rising in that it can be described more as a music video than a story. And that's why I gave it two stars. The music track is pretty cool, just like in Lucifer Rising. Other than that, it sucks.
I can say without a shadown of a doubt that the majority will not be impressed or entertained by much of it. Yes there is nudity and some blood/violence, but either you will be appaled by it (you shouldn't be here in the first place I reckon) or it won't excite you enough/to a degree where you can actually enjoy any of it (no pun intended).
This is some gothic ... stuff (feel free to use another word starting with an s, not encouraging you, not declining you that use either and no pun intended) ... stuff that you have to dig. And a music video vibe of low (budget) caliber. No dialog of note, no story in a wider or broader sense ... there is a lot you probably will dislike here .. or you will relish in the pragmatism and minimalism of the goth art ... and music and make up and ... stuff as I said.
I usually do not condone people watching just a small part of the movie and then rating it, but I would not hold it against you, if you stop watching this after a while ... it will not get "better" (for you that is) ... a time waster then, if you let it be (no pun intended). Just be sure not to perform the rituals depicted ... they may be real (I'm kidding of course about them being real ... I think)
