Is it a cinematic masterpiece?
Well, no... But does the fun the cast and crew had making it show through?
Absolutely.
Decided to have a drink and watch a random recommended movie and this did not disappoint. From the first scene with the most in-your-face exposition drop I knew this was going to be one to just sit back, turn my brain off, and enjoy some silliness. It's a great concept and the film doesn't try and pretend to be more than that. Also, the casting is fantastic and all the actors were a blast to watch.
If you're looking for a great critique on the horror comedy genre look elsewhere, but if you just want to watch a fun horror comedy movie then this is worth the hour and a half runtime.

Not every film intentionally sets out to be Oscar-worthy. Sometimes you make a film to showcase Brian Cox as something other than Logan Roy, and whether that was the intent or not, he was hilarious and crude and kind, and I really enjoyed it! Love seeing Edie Falco again, LOVE Lisa Kudrow and her quippy one liners, LOOOOVE Parker Posey, she can't do anything wrong, in my opinion. It's just a mindless horror comedy (though more
Comedy and less horror), and that's honestly what we all need right now. I probably wouldn't set out to watch it again, but I'm definitely glad I decided to watch it today!

This movie doesn't take its self seriously and is basically a horror rom-com intentionally making fun of clichés and such. It's not reserved whatsoever so prepare to hear things out of nowhere that just make you giggle. The visual effects are mostly practical and not CGI which is where I believe this film gets a rating boost from me. The hate that most horror films receive is the story is not developed and blah blah blah, its a solo horror movie, just take an hour and a half and enjoy this silly little film with some friends or family. Overall the cast was perfect for their characters and it's a fun quick film.

I wanted to like it, but If it wasn't for the supporting cast this wouldn't have worked, but they make it watchable. The humor is shallow and clichéd, but the performances are the backbone of this one.
The star power of the cast is really the only selling point here, and without them it's not worth the watch. Brian Cox was hilarious and demonstrated his range once again. Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris actually complement each other quite well here. Parker Posey breathes life into the tired caricature of the cooky stranger, Edie Falco was meh and the two main characters lack good chemistry and depth.
Not a bad movie, it's just flat. It has redeeming moments, but for the most part, pairing a cast this talented with such a mediocre script leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Just what I was in the mood for. Several laugh-out-loud moments! Nothing mind-blowing, just a fun escape with a little horror sprinkled in. I watched because it was listed as the No. 1 movie this Friday on Max, and I knew Brandon Flynn from 13 Reasons Why, and like him as an actor. Was also obsessed with Lisa Kudrow's character in this; her one-liners had me cracking up. Not too spooky that those who aren't into horror wouldn't enjoy it. The best friend Sara was also hilarious! Such a funny joining-of-families gone terribly wrong, but the band of misfits somehow work together. I would watch again!

The Parenting is billed as "Comedy-Horror", but it's actually a Mystery. The mystery being how did they assemble such a stellar cast for this lamentable dreck. While the "horror" elements are occasionally so lame as to qualify as comedy, the comedy is desperate mish-mash that runs the gamut from horror-genre parody to ham-fisted character comedy that relies heavily on the trademark schtick of the various stars. So we get Parker Posey in Crazy Lady mode. Lisa Kudrow deploying her familiar Ditzy-Not-Ditzy cadences. Edie Falco being acerbic. Etc. Etc. If you love any of these actors enough you might find The Parenting bearable, even vaguely entertaining. But you will not find it worth any of obviously phoney 8, 9 or 10 IMDB ratings.
If bringing families together is already a challenge in everyday life, imagine doing it in an isolated setting while also dealing with supernatural events. "The Parenting" takes this classic premise, mixing horror and comedy to create a weekend none of the characters will forget. The result is a film that plays with genre conventions without fully committing to any of them, balancing scares, humor, and a subtle exploration of family relationships. With a cast full of veteran talent and direction that knows how to handle both social awkwardness and well-timed scares, the movie entertains without necessarily reinventing the wheel. Its biggest strength lies in how it weaves these elements together cohesively, never letting one aspect completely overshadow the others.
The story follows Rohan (Nik Dodani) and Josh (Brandon Flynn), a couple who decide to bring their families together for a weekend getaway-a plan that already carries some natural tension, which only worsens when they realize the house they've rented is haunted. The script makes good use of the characters' dynamics, building the initial interactions with sharp humor and a generous dose of awkwardness. The arrival of the parents only adds to the friction: on one side, there's Frank (Brian Cox) and Sharon (Edie Falco), rigid and emotionally reserved; on the other, Liddy (Lisa Kudrow) and Cliff (Dean Norris), much more affectionate and open. The exchanges of snide remarks and uncomfortable glances set the tone for the film's first half, while small details subtly hint that something is off about the house.
The suspense builds effectively within the film's lighthearted approach, with subtle clues stacking up until they culminate in more explicit horror moments. The presence of Brenda (Parker Posey), the house's eccentric caretaker, already brings a mix of comedy and unease. The chalk circle on the floor, the full moon, and the history of past disappearances are introduced casually, but the looming threat gradually escalates until the first truly shocking scene-when Frank violently attacks Josh-flips the switch into supernatural horror. From that point on, the film leans into its more grotesque side, with possessions, high-velocity projectile vomiting, and sequences that feel like a "light" version of "Evil Dead."
The movie's biggest asset is its cast. Brian Cox is clearly having a blast playing a possessed patriarch, delivering a performance that swings between menacing and ridiculously funny. Parker Posey, with her natural knack for eccentric characters, steals every scene she's in, adding mystery and unintentional humor. Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris have great chemistry as the more approachable, laid-back parents, while Edie Falco adds depth to her judgmental character, making her more human rather than just a caricature. Meanwhile, Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn work well as the central couple, though the film is far more interested in the interactions between the veteran actors than in their relationship.
Craig Johnson's direction keeps the pacing tight, never letting the film linger too long in either genre. There's a well-balanced blend of horror and comedy, something that could easily spiral out of control if the tone wasn't carefully managed. Kent Sublette's script, on the other hand, has a great sense of comedic timing, especially in how it integrates humor organically into the horror setting-like the creative way the characters accidentally utter a cursed phrase because it's the Wi-Fi password. Still, the film avoids excessive self-awareness or meta-humor, opting for laughs that come naturally from absurd situations rather than relying solely on references or parody.
Visually, "The Parenting" doesn't try to reinvent the horror aesthetic but makes solid use of classic elements. The house itself is a pretty generic "haunted mansion" setting, but the cinematography takes full advantage of its wide spaces and unsettling shadows to build tension. The practical effects are well executed, especially in the possession scenes, and the lighting in the final act-when the mystery of the house is fully revealed-adds a genuinely eerie atmosphere.
"The Parenting" knows exactly what it wants to be: a light horror flick that never takes itself too seriously but also doesn't descend into complete farce. It leans on its talented cast and sharp humor to make the experience more fun than scary, delivering well-placed jump scares, solid laughs, and a storyline that, while predictable, unfolds in an engaging way. It may not be a standout in the genre, but it works as a well-crafted piece of entertainment-one of those movies that's worth the watch and might even make some viewers think twice before saying random Wi-Fi passwords out loud.

Tedious load of tropes about relationships. After 20 minutes nothing remotely interesting happens. Parker Posey is sinking more and more into lazy self parody. Otherwise this reads like Beetlejuice meets Meet the Parents with even less artistic merit and even more play on familial dysfunction as campy in on the joke humor. Been here, slogged through this. Not giving it my attention. Just gonna have to guess Brian Cox needed the money, because i've never seen him pick mediocrity as a path forward through performance and this is just full of it.
And now amazon somehow expects another paragraph for me to say don't waste your time on a formula you've seen before and tired tge furst time you saw it. Yeesh!

I was a little skeptical at first about this movie because horror comedies haven't been very strong in recent years. When you think of great horror comedies, movies like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil or Shaun of the Dead come to mind, but it's hard to think of a recent horror comedy that was both enjoyable and genuinely funny. At first, this also sounded like just another haunted house movie, with the only twist being gay protagonists. However, the script by Kent Sublette and the direction by Craig Johnson proved me wrong.
The movie manages to be funny on multiple levels, and even though the humor didn't always land-which is completely normal for comedy movies-I laughed out loud a few times, which is pretty rare. It had a few great running gags, and some of the characters were absolutely hilarious. The cast was fantastic, with everyone completely understanding the assignment and portraying their characters in an enjoyable and funny way.
This won't go down as a horror-comedy classic, but it was quite entertaining, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I would have loved for the horror elements to be a bit stronger, as that could have elevated the movie even more, but otherwise, this is a solid film that was actually funny in many ways. [6,1/10]

What the heck did I watch? I'm giving it two stars only bc I watched the whole thing.
I was excited when I saw the cast. Who doesn't love Edie Falco and Lisa Kudrow? Somehow, this movie made them look like D-list actors.
I'm certainly not a prude, but if someone called my gay son all the things that Frank said, I wouldn't have left that second. Such stupidity!
This movie seems like a parody. I'm shocked anyone would have read the script and thought it would be a great movie to be a part of. I guess it's slim pickings for actors today:
This is an hour and a half of my life I will never get back.

There are a lot of talented actors, but the movie itself seems completely lost. It doesn't know whether it wants to be scary or funny, and in the end, it's neither. The only real saving grace is Parker Posey, who, as always, steals every scene she's in with her charisma and energy. Beyond that, the so-called "jokes" feel tired and overused, the character development is clumsy and unnatural, and the pacing is unbearably slow. It drags on without any real purpose, making the whole experience frustrating. What could have been an entertaining film ends up as a messy, forgettable disappointment....

I really enjoy movies like this one. Comedy horror has always been one of my favorite cathegories.
It's not a movie you have to overthink and we need one of those from time to time. Just sit back, grab some popcorn and enjoy.
The cast is very entertaining and won't really let you get bored. I've always been a fan of Lisa Kudrow and absolutely love her acting.
If you have really high expectations, like for an award winning film, i'd recommend you find something else, this one is for relaxing and having a laugh. I didn't expect for this cast to work so well together but the chemistry is there.
10/10.

The Parentjng is a truly bizarre experience; whoever this writer and director are have somehow got the funding together for a mid sized budget to house and an impossibly prolific cast to appear in what can only be described as one of the silliest, most derivative and thinly stretched scripts I've seen in some time. And yet.. the cast they got somehow manages to make it worthwhile on their collective manic energy alone. The story sees a gay couple rent an Airbnb out in the country so that both sets of their parents can meet and they can all get some downtime. Right off the bat the woman they get the keys from (Parker Posey in full on loopy mode) is just super odd, and of course the house happens to be haunted by a very dysfunctional demon. The two gay dudes aren't the most memorable actors but their parents are played by Brian Cox, Edie Falco, Dean Norris and Lisa Kudrow, which is quite the impressive lineup. The running gag is that Cox's character gets possessed by the destructive demon and this is where the film comes as close to inspired as it ever can: strutting about the house ass naked instructing anyone who will listen to look at his dick, cheerfully slashing up anyone close to him with a bread knife and barking out lots of homophobic slurs (the demon comes from a less enlightened time, one character informs us), he is the absolute star of the show here and even in a hopelessly underwritten comedy that relies on shamelessly cheap and vulgar gags, Cox is just one of the best to ever do it and makes his scenes hum with an anarchic, almost Evil Dead vibe. Posey also chews scenery in the few appearances she has, bookending the film with her manic pixie energy that is always welcome. It's not a good movie by anyone's standards and I'm frankly surprised it even got made let alone with this cast, but it has some hilarious moments and flashes of comedic brilliance, mostly thanks to Cox and willingness to get weird and wave his schlong around. Streaming now on CraveTV.

Feels like they were writing a parody movie without knowing it. A really fun cast and entertaining premise soured by cringe comedy. Was excited after watching the preview and had a disappointing viewing experience.
I wanted to enjoy this so much more. I love spooky vibes, the big haunted house, and the snowy setting. I think the visual presentation was cool, a lot of different shots with fun "horror aesthetic" lighting. Parker Posey crushed her role and carried the movie the best she could.
Even with a great cast it was hard to pull of unfunny and uncomfortable writing. Something to leave on in the background kind of movie.

Are the cliches today still funny enough: Two totally different families? A haunting? Staying together for days? A gay male relationship? Expected writing and foreseeable outcome?
All demonic signs point to yes. It's a simple recipe. Because Edie Falco (more of her anytime!) and Lisa Kudrow (somehow still getting better and better and better) are always a powerhouse, combined with the literal magic of Parker Posey (needs no explaining), the movie creates an endearing yet unsettling group of performances.
Unexpected small bit comedy with fun timing carries you through the whole film. If you're looking for huge dramatic scenes with punch-in-gut acting, look elsewhere. This is a silly comedy with really fun tones, overt use of obvious low hanging humor and little depth. But that's the point, and definitely worth the quick 1h40m watch.

Look, for what it's worth, i don't find this movie to be terrible. However I do think it fails in comedic aspect. So many awkward moments that were supposed to be funny but just didn´t land for me.
I found the horror elements better creating a weird mix of horror with cringy dialgogue. To add to that, despite having a great cast it just felt they were underutilized.
The premise of the film was quite fun and I do believe it had so much potential. That and the actors (especially Brandon Flynn´s charismatic presence) made me hang on till the end.
If you want to watch a film that blends horror with humor there are better ones like The Cabin in the Woods.

It's difficult to put the finger on why this didn't work. It's a comedy horror which is neither funny nor scary enough. There's nothing wrong with the basic premise, which is basically Meet the Fockers meet The Evil Dead.
But the writing is so stale, in particular the dialogue. Not surprising since it's penned by an SNL writer. Writing a five minute sketch and keeping a story alive for 100 minutes are two different skill sets, and he certainly don't master the latter.
It isn't helped by lackluster direction. The staging is wooden and he isn't able to coax good performances from his cast.
As for the actors, the two guys in the lead have the chemistry of a wet blanket and the comedy chops of Heinrich Himmler.
It might have seemed like a good idea to fill the supporting cast with four older and more seasoned actors. But three of them are hardly known for their comedy and the fourth is playing the exact same character, right down to her mannerisms, which made her one of the most famous faces on TV 30 years ago.

Queer, funny and scary, what more could you wish for? The acting is great, the jokes are a great mix of dad jokes and gen Z-gags. And it's very camp and over the top from time to time. I laughed hard and actually got creeped out at times. The special effects look realistic and disgusting. The pacing keeps you hooked, and the characters are fun to root for-even (especially?) the annoying ones. A refreshing twist on both horror and family dynamics, with a queer sensibility that feels natural, not forced. You can tell the cast had a blast.
I think the bad reviews may be a rooted in... homophobia?

The Parenting (I have no idea why this is the title of the film) is a fun movie on paper but never really lands, much like many of the jokes that the writers clearly tried hard to make work.
Loaded with Posey, Cox, and Kudrow-some of the well-known star cast-you'd feel this film couldn't fail. But it does so spectacularly, more often than not. This film tries to be so many things: a horror-comedy with a progressive storyline, a portrayal of dysfunctional but funny parenting (I assume this is what the title eludes to), and a feel-good family movie with a modern-day romance. Alas, in the end, it leaves you asking for more on all those fronts.
The performances by Posey, Cox, Kudrow, and the rest of the parents are good (though nothing extraordinary). However, the lead pair often seemed to lack both the sharp comedic timing and the heartfelt chemistry this film desperately needed.
That said, there are some funny moments here and there, which might make it worth streaming once.

Stumbling upon the 2025 horror comedy "The Parenting" without ever having heard about it, I needed no persuasion to sit down and watch it given my love of all things horror. Plus, it being a horror movie that I had never heard certainly counted for something, as did the impressive cast ensemble.
Writer Kent Sublette put together an enjoyable and entertaining script and storyline. I was rather surprised with how oddly bizarre and fun the storyline turned out to be. It has been quite some time since I've sat down and watched a horror comedy of this type. So thumbs up to writer Kent Sublette for that accomplishment.
The cast ensemble in "The Parenting" was good. And with the likes of Brandon Flynn, Brian Cox, Edie Falco, Lisa Kudrow, Parker Posey and Dean Norris on the cast list, then you know you're in capable company. While I was not familiar with Nik Dodani and Vivian Bang, I will say that they were great additions to the movie.
Visually then the movie was good. There were some good effects being used at some crucial story points.
If you have the chance to watch "The Parenting", and you enjoy horror comedies, then I would definitely recommend that you sit down and spend 94 minutes on it. I was genuinely and wholeheartedly entertained.
My rating of director Craig Johnson's 2025 horror comedy "The Parenting" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

The Parenting offers the weekend gathering of a gay couple, both sets of parents, and a female friend of one of the gay couple. Add Parker Posey as a kookie spiritualist offering a haunted home for an Air BNB, and the cast is complete. Also the parents as played by good actors that bring the funny as best as they can.
The trouble with this film is that it doesn't coalesce into a whole concept well. First, we have the class of cultures with the two sets of parents, one rich and uptight and the other middle class and more "common." Second, the gay couple follow some of the tropes albeit mildly elevated of what gays are typically in films. Third, the haunted house follows every step of a comedy satire of this type of film.
It was an okay watch, nothing special, and not bringing much overall to the table. It has a little bit of stiffness as if these were sketches strung together from a stage play. So while some scenes may bring a little levity to the movie, overall this doesn't offer much in terms of entertainment.

This is way too underrated currently. I was thoroughly amused the entire time. It's funny, witty, and entertaining. Additionally, the casting for the parents was fun. Lots of fun surprises. It's unique. Truthfully, I don't know if it deserves a 10/10 from an actual critic's point of view. However, it deserves way better ratings than it currently has. Don't sleep on this film, give it a shot. Don't be fooled by the other ratings. Parker Posey is pretty hilarious in it as well. There's lots of demony things in it but the humor makes it not very scary. If you have nothing better to do and hour to kill pop it in.
"The Parenting" is a gaudy horror-comedy that follows a millennial couple who invite their parents to what seems like a quiet country house-only to discover it's home to a demon of unknown age. For much of its brisk, 90-minute running time, the film is genuinely entertaining. Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn click as the nervy hosts, while Brian Cox's gruff father, Lisa Kudrow's anxious mother and Parker Posey's mystical neighbour gleefully steal scenes. Director Craig Johnson balances solid jump scares-a groaning chandelier, cutlery floating across the kitchen-against sharp one-liners; practical effects lend retro charm, though a few CG shots feel half-finished.
The movie stumbles in its last act: the finale dissolves into frantic spectacle, the demon is dispatched by an oddly saccharine declaration of love, and earlier tensions wrap up in sudden group hugs. Some jokes land flat, leaving the humour uneven overall. What remains is enjoyable yet undercooked entertainment that never realises its full potential. A respectable but flawed ride: 6 out of 10.

Judging by the cast, I was really looking forward to seeing this. It seemed to have so much potential but lacked any real funny moments.
The characters were all very predictable and the two gay central characters were so cliched.
It seemed the same formula as all other boy meets girl (in this case boy) who meets the in laws at a remote hotel! We've seen it all before.
I was hoping for really good laugh with a bit of horror mixed in. I can honestly say I did not laugh once as it all seemed so silly and over acted.
We're was the horror or did the lack of comedy scare it off.
Even the stellar big names could not rescue this disaster.

Before we say anything else, let's agree that this is an entertaining film. The comedy works. It has an incredibly good cast, and the director does a very good job with his shots.
Now, having said all that, it's one sequence after another of ideas already shown in the movies. Every time a scene came up, I could recall an existing film. It's as if the script was made up of many ideas from previous films. The cynical might say it's a compendium of ideas borrowed from ChatGPT itself.
But hey, if you want a fun movie with some humor and horror for the whole family without any major jump scares, this is your option. Or at least it's the option 2025 has offered us so far.
