Ray Nicholson and Samara Weaving in Borderline (2025)

Not for me

I love Samara Weaving, and I'm happy to see Alba Baptista gaining space in an international production, but not even that saved Borderline from being a frustrating experience. For 90 minutes, all I could think was: "what the hell is this?"

The film tries to be an eccentric thriller with touches of dark humor, but it completely fails to balance the genres. There's no tension, no coherence, not even a solid script. It's a mess of scenes crashing into each other, as if the story is always on the verge of making sense but then refuses to follow a logical path.

The biggest problem is this lack of focus. Borderline seems to want to be everything at once but never commits to anything. Some moments suggest an intense thriller, while others try to lean into absurd comedy, but nothing really works. The humor falls flat because it lacks timing and impact, and the suspense never actually builds up, making it hard to feel engaged in the story. When it finally seems to find its direction, it quickly loses itself again, as if it's afraid of taking itself too seriously.

That said, I can't deny that Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson carry the film on their backs. She continues to showcase impressive versatility in her roles, and he delivers a fantastic performance that makes me believe he'll become a major force in the industry in the coming years.

Another positive is the soundtrack, which, while not enough to save the film, adds a few moments of atmosphere. But overall, Borderline is an experience that won't appeal to everyone. It had all the ingredients to be a fun and unpredictable thriller, but instead, it's an exercise in patience, kind of stupid and never quite sure of what it wants to be.

The worst of both worlds

I'm starting to think Jimmy Warden films are not for me. I haven't enjoyed anything I've seen of his to date. His films seem to find an awkward middle ground between serious and humour, and instead of being the best of both worlds, it's the worst of both and just becomes painful to get through.

That's how I found 'Borderline'. I just couldn't find any element of it to grip on to. When it's trying to be funny, it is rarely funny. When it's trying to be serious, it comes across very flat and uninteresting. And when it trying to be stylish and crafty, it just doesn't work.

The one thing I will give it credit for is some good song choices along the way. Otherwise this one was a complete miss for me. A very generous 4/10.

Flatline.

This film starts out okay, with a great cast, decent acting, and a premise that one feels might be a pretty entertaining black comedy... but the whole thing doesn't really amount to anything.

The writing here feels improvised, like random wacky and edgy ideas are being thrown into a blender to hopefully result in a crazy modern cult favourite.

You can almost hear somebody wetting themselves at jokes that your uncle might tell at a party that no-one laughs at, or like an SNL sketch that never made the cut and was not broadcast.

The confidence in this material to produce and release this film seems as delusional as the title character.

It's probably not as bad to other viewers as it is to me, but sometimes disappointment in something I thought was going to be great feels like I'm being ripped off or something.

Just... Fine?

"Borderline" had the ingredients to be something truly special, but instead, it settles for being just fine. The film teases a bold and sharp-edged narrative, yet it never fully embraces its potential, leaving an overall experience that is enjoyable in parts but frustratingly uneven.

The movie struggles with pacing. Several scenes drag on far longer than necessary, turning initially amusing or interesting moments into awkward stretches that overstay their welcome. More than once, I found myself thinking, "Why is this scene still going? It was funny a minute ago, but now it's just uncomfortable." This inconsistent rhythm makes the film feel sluggish at times, dampening its impact.

While the humor worked for me in many places-thanks to my appreciation for dark, offbeat comedy-it might not land for everyone. The film walks a fine line between being cleverly absurd and just feeling directionless. There are glimpses of brilliance in the writing, but they often get buried under scenes that lack focus or feel like they're stalling for time.

On the positive side, I really liked the character of Penny. Her dialogue, delivery, and presence (even if minimal) add energy to the film, making it feel brighter and more engaging whenever she's on screen. Her wit and charisma create some of the film's best moments.

Overall, "Borderline" could have been so much more. It had the potential to be a sharp, biting dark comedy, but instead, it settles for being intermittently amusing and frustratingly uneven. It's a film that I wanted to love but could only like-and just barely.

Not worth it

Samara Weaving is a delight to watch. She's let down by a bad script and direction that is tonally all over the place. Ray Nicholson is campy and over the top, so if that's your thing you're in luck. He's too zany to ever be truly threatening. The characters behave in irrational ways just to make the plot happen. It's quirky and off beat but none of the humor really lands (the funniest bits are Ms. Weavings facial expressions to the craziness around her). The only reason this was set in the '90s is tonget around the ubiquity of cell phones. I'm not sure the movie knows what it's supposed to be and just ends up being a muddled mess. The film was competently shot and does look good.

Not another remake

Not the best, far from the worst. But in the age where everything is being recycled and there seems to be an utter lack of creativity, this was something a bit clever. Its focus on mental health was done in an intentional way, and the 90's styling and music was a nice addition. Overall, decent movie to pass the time and if you're looking for an Oscar award winner well this isn't it, but just some 90's glam fun and a quirky unique film then this could be for you.

Give it a chance

Is this the best movie I've ever seen? Obviously not but it's fun. And at least it's not another remake! I don't get why some people are super low balling the rating for this. It's a solid 5/6, not a 2, or the 8s I've seen, but hopefully that counteracts the 2s. It's a fun dark comedy. Definitely silly at times but go with it and allow it to be silly. I thought the cast was good. Though it seems Samara is getting a bit type casted in these roles. Ray Nicholson looks just like his father but hes pretty good at playing crazy. This movie made me laugh and it was a good choice for a rainy weekend afternoon. Not everything has to be a masterpiece, this is original and paced well.

Not good

Movies like this are why people are turning movies like this off and watching movies from at least 10 plus years ago. This movie tries to be funny. It wasn't funny. This movie tries to be a thriller. It's not thrilling. This movie tries to be a horror. But there's not much of that either. What is this movie trying to be? Because it fails at everything that tries to do. So if I were you, I wouldn't waste one hour and 35 minutes of my life on this garbage, and instead, watch something from at least 10 years ago or so when they actually made competent movies.

2/10 don't waste your time like I did.

Gotta be in the mood and understand the tone

I can see why this film might put off some people. Either you buy the tone and decide to go along for the ride, or you roll your eyes and call it trash. Personally I decided to go with it, and I'm glad I did because there's some really funny moments and really unexpected moments of levity followed by psychotic insanity. You almost feel for Paul. He's got very pure intentions. But boy oh boy does he go off the rails. And I loved it. Also thought the music was great and the camera work was tight and interesting. All and all a solid followup to Cocaine Bear. Interested to see what this dude does next.

A "borderline" enjoyable film which has its moments. [+61%]

Borderline certainly has its moments, especially in the first and second acts, with events unfolding at a rapid pace and characters getting established. I could easily buy Samara Weaving as a 90s pop star (who needed to sing a lot more in the film), Ray Nicholson as a romantic stalker-sociopath (man, this guy's got the presence and the "killer" smile!), and Eric Dane as a bodyguard (somehow, the protagonist?). Alba Baptista also gets a notably wacky role. The performances are pretty good, the lighting choices are great, and the colour palette is interesting. And oh yes, I really enjoyed the soundtrack.

What doesn't hit a home-run, for me, is basically the watered-down third act (..even when there are enough stabbings and some darkly funny moments). The film desperately needed more of Ray Nicholson than the rest, but the man simply chews up the scenery whenever he's present. The showdown between Samara Weaving and Alba Baptista was enjoyable. It's just that the film can't entirely stick the landing in terms of its tonality, thereby not ending up as memorable given the potential we see early on. Also, they didn't give the romance angle (between Sofia & Rhodes) any real build-up, and it ends up looking weak as hell.

Can Samara Weaving only get streaming roles?

Dark comedy is one of my favorite genres. And everything about the premise of Borderline makes it seem like something I should love. But I found almost no enjoyment or entertainment from watching it.

The mix of horror (barely) and comedy just doesn't work. The tone feels off. Nearly every comedic attempt falls flat (except for one involving practicing for an audition lol).

Idiotic character decisions are common in these types of movies. But here, it's not so much the decisions being idiotic as it is the script just not making sense. There are multiple parts where I thought I missed something, rewatched the previous scene, and realized I wasn't missing anything, the movie is just dumb.

I really hope Samara Weaving can start getting some major theatrical roles. She's too good for this garbage.

Not a comedy, not a horror, not very good.

The title of this review sums up the feelings I have regarding this movie. Nothing about Borderline was particularly good. I couldn't tell if it was the bad actors, was the poorly developed characters, or if it was simply bad writing. When the cast was as random as this was, I honestly should of known there was a high probability of it not being good. Even with it's just over hour and a half running time, I just wanted it over. The only few comical moments were at the end of the movie, and seemed a too little, too late. It wasn't scary, wasn't very funny, was predictable, and definitely not worth watching again.

That was good.

Borderline (2025) is a horror comedy thriller movie and it was good enough.

Positives for Borderline (2025): The movie's premise is pretty decent for the most part. Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson and Eric Dane give good performances. There is some good dark comedy sprinkled throughout the movie. There is a good fight sequence between Samara Weaving and this other woman. And finally, the ending of the movie was pretty good.

Negatives for Borderline (2025): The movie isn't as good as I hope it would be. The movie could've been longer to make itself better. I also don't think the characters are developed enough despite the actors giving good performances. And finally, the climax at the end was underwhelming.

Overall, Borderline (2025) is a fun horror comedy thriller movie, but it was a little disappointing for me and it is easily the weakest movie from Samra Weaving.

Terrible movie

This movie may be one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen. It was all over the place, unrealistic but also unfunny, and did not even remotely look like it was set during the 1990s. The whole thing would have ended in twenty minutes if I was a character in it, and overall it was just a terrible, piece of junk movie. The acting was alright but like I said there's no plot structure, it was all over the place. I usually enjoy horror comedies but this one was not even remotely for me. Maybe if you like plotless movies watch this. Otherwise, I would not waste 7 dollars or even 7 cents on this film.

Samara Weaving Shines in a Darkly Fun Ride

Borderline is a stylish, offbeat film that blends dark comedy with home invasion horror, though it never fully capitalizes on its potential. Samara Weaving is the film's strongest asset, delivering a charismatic and layered performance as Sofia, a washed-up '90s pop star who finds herself trapped with an obsessive fan (Ray Nicholson). Their twisted dynamic keeps things engaging, even when the script struggles to balance tension and humor.

The film's direction by Jimmy Warden has flair, with neon-soaked visuals and sharp editing that add to the surreal, nightmarish vibe. However, the tone is inconsistent-sometimes genuinely unnerving, sometimes absurd to the point of undercutting its suspense. The humor works in parts but feels misplaced in others, making it hard to take the danger seriously.

While Borderline is entertaining, it lacks the depth or punch to be truly memorable. If you're a fan of Weaving or enjoy quirky dark comedies, it's worth a watch. Otherwise, it's a fun but forgettable ride.

Didn't like it.

I was not laughing. I was just mad at the level of stupidity. The way people reacted in this movie is simply not based on reality. So the boyfriend sees she is in trouble and yet he didn't call the police. The security guard couldn't subdue a young woman. Nobody, including the victim has the intelligence to call the police. Is just stupid. People that are supposed to be under duress just act as if they ran out if milk. No tears no screams. In the age of cellphones there is not one sable phone in sight. Totally unreal. I keep typing because it is required but the idea is the same. This is not funny. It is just ludicrous.

Stop pretending, it wasn't bad

I was hesitating if i wanted to watch it or no, but i decided to give it a try. Well i didn't expect to like it, at the beginning i was like 'what am i watching' but then it became more interesting and i had fun, i laughed out loud a few times, Samara did a fantastic job as always, Ray was also very good, basically the best actors on this movie. So happy to have Samara in another horror comedy, that's my favourite scream queen. Borderline is a wild comedy thriller. It has a cool cast and unpredictable twists, it's a chaotic rollercoaster of laughs, thrills, and plenty of wtf moments and i definitely recommend.

sucked

I don't know why it's getting praise because besides good directing... it was confusing and sucked. I did not get the ending. It felt like there was some good speed at the start... then it started to waver and then it just went downhill after a while til it was ending i just remebering thinking.... what am i watching and why does it feel like it started off great and went south. I also did not like that they kept some parts of why the stalker is doing what he is doing as vague. I love samara in everything but this wasn't it. Also, that penny character was annoying and the accent and acting was bad.

A Glittery, Unhinged Ride into Madness!!!

Who wouldn't want to marry Samara Weaving? And who wouldn't want to be relentlessly chased by Ray Nicholson - Jack Nicholson's own flesh and blood? Well...Definitely ME.

I went into Borderline with cautious curiosity and rock-bottom expectations. And yet, to my surprise, I had a blast. Why? Well, let's say it had a lot to do with the movie itself - and a little to do with the way it wasn't marketed as The Next Big Horror Sensation.

Unlike "The Monkey" (which had the full-blown hype machine behind it), "Borderline" quietly made its way into 2025's lineup without setting itself up for impossible expectations. And honestly? That worked in its favour.

Now, onto the movie itself. The plot? Simple: Paul (Ray Nicholson) has a sick twisted plan to marry pop superstar Sofia (Samara Weaving). That's all you really need to know. But, what follows is a chaotic, absurd black comedy with a neon-splattered deep dive into mental instability. It's less horror, more a deliciously deranged mix of dark humour and psychological-glittery drama - unsettling and completely unhinged.

The whole stalking-meets-home-invasion angle might not work for everyone, but for someone like me - who loves peeling back the layers of a film beyond its surface - it was a blast.

The less you know going in, the better. But if you, like me, enjoy a bit of cheesy, crazy, nonsensical fun as a breather from heavier cinema - especially when it sneaks in a dark, unsettling take on mental disorders (which, let's be honest, is totally my cup of tea) - this one's for you.

Special shoutout to Ray Nicholson, who absolutely owns his first leading role. Sure, we got a hint of his eerie, unforgettable smile in "Smile 2," but "Borderline" lets him stretch those psychotic muscles even further. He's got that natural screen presence - part creepy, part hypnotic, and 100% inherited from his legendary father. With those piercing ice-blue eyes and a knack for unsettling charm, he's one to watch.

Samara Weaving - my beloved scream queen - delivers something totally different here. She's relaxed, effortlessly funny, and razor-sharp in a role that echoes her "Ready or Not" survivor spirit but still feels fresh.

The thing about Samara? She likes to fight. The thing about Ray? He likes to smile. That dynamic alone makes for a twisted, entertaining ride.

Oh, and the music? Perfection. This isn't a musical, but trust me, there are moments where you'll be dying to belt out some pop bangers. The soundtrack isn't just fun - it makes total sense in the context of the film, adding an extra layer of chaos to the madness.

While "Borderline" might not make my Top 10 genre films of 2025 by year's end, I have zero regrets about spending my time with it.

It's weird, wild, and unexpectedly hilarious - a fever dream of a film that doesn't take itself too seriously. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need.

Needs a rewrite & some comedy for the dark comedy

I guess everyone has to pay their mortgager!

The storyline from start to finish is poor, the "security man" should have retired 10 years ago, who gets paid to stand there doing zero security, then who leaves their door open and sits with their back to it as the secondary "security" and again with the window.. it's floor after floor, the most unrealistic stupid film ever written.

Jack Nicholsons son is the most irritating actor who basically plays the poorest impression of Jack in The Shining, he's enough to warn you from the credits that it's going to be a waste of your time/life.

So many stupid characters and just terrible, no comedy, no darkness just a big dark hole otherwise known as...

Borderline na not for me

Borderline looked quite forced. Yes it had Samantha weaving and other actors and actresses but some of them felt like they were overacting trying to catch our attention and it just didn't click. When I heard weaving was going to be there my mind went to horror but not really. The movie had potential but it just didn't land. I had to check what the movie was about to show you that it was rather confusing but got the hint when the stalker went all out to find her with the acting fine in some places and very bland in others. The duet though was funny!! Would recommend only for people who are fans of the movie if not skip.

Surprisingly good

I came into this movie not expecting much. The lead actors are both second generation, so some pedigree at least has the power of their surnames to pull in the viewers.

But give it time, both Ray Nicholson and Samara Weaving delivered good performances, complete with facial expressions that really get you into the moment, plus casting images of their famous parents' roles, scarily so with Nicholson and his Joker-like grin at one point.

The story is good, the writing was ok, but the finished product was greater than the sum of the parts. For such a small cast, they had to gel well and they delivered a performance that fit this billing.
