The Crow

5/10

Extremely mediocre and forgettable

I'm trying to be as impartial as possible about this film. The original movie had such a deep gothic atmosphere that really resonated within the 90s. The current rendition of The Crow is a true showing of giving a property to a group of people who just don't get it. We definitely need to commend those who worked on the film because it's frankly beautiful, and you can tell a lot of care was put into the making of it. Sadly, a beautiful picture doesn't make up for crap storytellings or characters, and this is where the film ultimately fails. You remember in Austin powers when Dr. Evil asks if he's hip and cool? It felt like the studio was doing a vote on what would make the main protagonist "edgy" with giving him a bunch of tattoo's and problems to show he's really in some deep times. This is precisely what they do, but yet the main characters honestly give you little to no reason to care about them because they aren't likable In my honest opinion (I also couldn't tell you the antagonist's character name because that's how little I cared). At the end of the day is this movie a 1 star? No! However anyone who says this is an 8 or above are the same folks that would argue borderlands had heart. Judge as you will fellow rockers of the free world.

Absolute Cringe

Everybody that's reviewing the movie poorly on here is doing it because it's an utter embarrassment to the original "the crow" content pieces.

I will try to be more original and tell you why it's bad without that, because this movie doesn't get any better if you look at it as a standalone piece of writing either

This movie was actually so cringe. It was difficult to watch. The female lead was painfully bad at acting. The antagonists were terribly dull. The main character's development was sloppy. The pacing of the movie was all over the place from the beginning to the end.

There was supposed to be emotional scenes in this movie but the audience was actually laughing at them. That's what this movie is. Laughable.

Yikes...

I'll refrain from spoilers in case you actually want to watch this. But if you're a fan of the original Crow by Alex Proyas or a fan of the comics. You will hate this movie, even if you're looking for a decent action movie, or a solid plot.

All that falls out the window with this film. I will try to summarize as best I can. They completely changed the original plot, practically all of it that's in the original movie or comics is zoinked into oblivion.

This film is the epitome of taking from people who wrote really good stories and thinking "hey we can do that but our way, and better". Well actually, you can't. And your way is awful.

The first thirty minutes is not only random, confusing and useless. But it tries us to get to like our main couple as some head over heels deeply in love romantic saga. When actually it's two drug addicts who escape rehab together to immediately hook up and do more drugs, after knowing each other a few days. For almost what seems like 10 minutes of the film we get to enjoy some spectacle of random making out, sex, drugs and corny high school level cringe dialogue thrown in.

They're talking about how much they love each other after a week together? What? What's shown isn't love or romance, it's infatuation and it doesn't make us connect with these characters.

The plot continues to muddle along to no man's land to the point where if you watched the original or the comics, you're just waiting for them to get killed so at least you can watch some bloody revenge action.

Nope. What you saw in the trailer is basically what you get. About 20 minutes of this movie is action. And I must admit, those sequences are actually good, and really violent. If they could have done more of that, maybe this could have been around a 5.

They tried to give The Crow a villain, with some "powers" of his own. I'll leave it at that, but none of this is explained so it feels forced and random. They could have flushed it out, but they wanted to spend the first forty minutes focusing on this cringy hook up session trying to convince us how deeply in love these two are. Look at them laughing half naked smoking pot, aren't they soooo in love? Ummm...sure if I was a 15 year old girl I'd think that...

There is some good cinematography but it's ruined by the "Jared Leto Joker"-esque Crow they give us. And just makes you disappointed he couldn't be depicted as his original comic look or the 1994 film version.

There is a fight sequence at the end, which saves the movie from being a 2/10. It's brutal, violent, cinematic and well executed. Despite some of the bad guys walking into melee range after shooting a guy who clearly isn't dying. But the scenes so cool I'm let it slide with brownie points.

Of course if you're going to have bad or mediocre plot, it can be saved by great cinematography and fantastic fight scenes. Now this film succeeds at this, but only does it for about twenty minutes worth....

That's not enough, if they wanted to do this, with this plot, they should of cut out 80% of that plot and just made this movie a 1hr 20 minuets of violence. Basically John Wick but with off brand Crow.

The problem is they didn't think this plot was bad...(Well that's not the only problem but you know what I mean.)

I had a feeling the film would be mediocre from the trailer, but I went in with an open mind hoping to be happily surprised. This wasn't even mediocre it was just a bad film.

This Crow Doesn't Fly!

Horrible remake. I gave it 3 stars for Skarsgard's performance. I thought he did a good job of a pure but tortured soul. Nothing else redeeming in this movie. The director did a very poor job. He chose to concentrate on artsy film takes of graphic violence that left no room for the essence of the storyline. This director was way too in love with himself to get the story translated to the screen.

The original movie with Brandon Lee was before its time. It captured the story of pure love of good souls who are so wrongly violated that it needed to be avenged.

Save your money and watch the original which stands up to the trial of time. Just like all good movies.

I'm not sure what I just watched!?

So I understood that this was a remake of the original film following the comic book adaptation, not to mention the other 3 films following the original... But this movie is so far removed from what 'The Crow' feels like (even compared to the lame follow ups to the first movie!). It's a generic, angst fueled teen movie.

We have a Gen Z couple, slightly entitled, otherwise likeable, them against the world type vibe. What else happens whilst this is established, I really couldn't tell you because this film is all over the place! Tragedy strikes and the lovers are separated... Only for our our protagonist to return suped-up, angry and ready to kill! And off he goes...

Other than the make up, nothing feels like 'The Crow' here... Nothing dark or brooding about this film. In the comics and the other films, almost every frame was gothic and decayed. The music in the first film was awesome and blended so well with the look and feel, as well as main character being a musician. That is nowhere to be found here.

By the time the film draws near to ending, you really just want it to be over.

I wish Hollywood would hire new talent and write new stories instead of continuing to butcher much loved classics.

This movie is bad.

I'm so confused by all the hate

First, I enjoyed the film. Was it a perfect film, no. Was I at any time bored, also no. I'm going to say something really controversial...the original wasn't a perfect film either. I still loved it. Just go see it and decide for yourself. If I had allowed myself to be swayed by the negativity that has surrounded this from the start or had seen some of the reviews I'm now seeing, I wouldn't have gone. I'm just not sure I trust reviews anymore period after this year. I can't help but feel there is an odd agenda to get people to hate this film. The "critics" reviews are rating it on average between 1-2.5 out of 5. I do not believe this is a 1 star film. Bill Skarsgårds screen presence alone makes it worth more than that. The cinematography and choreography were great as well.

a lacklustre movie, with poorly written dialogue, uneasy performances and almost zero chemistry

This is the story of a relationship so powerful, so intense, that it brings a man back from the brink of death to revenge his fallen loved one. Yet, here, in this new iteration of the story the relationship between Eric and Shelly lacks so much chemistry and intensity that about halfway into the film I'd almost forgotten it happened.

The script is stilted and clichéd. The performances are wooden and feel massively dialled in. Most of the action is poorly choreographed and doesn't work well. On the plus side some of the effects, and occasional slices of action, do work decently, but that's about it.

I really like Bill Skarsgård, but I do not like this at all. The director has said it's not a remake, or a sequel, and that it he 'wanted the evolution of Eric to The Crow to be fresh but rooted in the graphic novel. Now, I haven't read the graphic novels, but I'm sure those that have will make their voices heard.

Overall? It's a lacklustre movie, with poorly written dialogue, uneasy performances and almost zero chemistry between two people who are supposed to have an incredible 'love eternal'. The saving grace is the soundtrack which does include some awesome music. 2/5...I'll never watch it again...

This is NOT a remake

The visuals were actually pretty good. Story line not as well written as I hoped for. But people comparing this to the original shows their lack of knowledge of what and actual REBOOT or Remake is. From the start this is headed in a completely different direction than the original. Let's be honest people this is the 90's and no one can play Eric Draven better then Mr. Lee himself but Bill did a fantastic job. Only thing these movies have in common are the fact that it's Eric and Shelly.

If you have actually seen the Original Crow you would know that this was indeed NO REMAKE. A few scenes did fall flat for me but it did keep me invested thru out the entire film which is hard these days. Id say give it a try and don't let these other reviews steer you not watch it.

Remakes are fine... If they're good

I love the original. I actually didn't the first time I saw it. I liked it and it grew on me over the years and decades until I can't l can barely remember not loving it. I watched the sequels and the series and they were varying levels of ok.

There's two reasons this is terrible.

There is a reason to remake it. One being that you could make it more accurate to the graphic novel. They didn't, they actually made it even further from the source material so what's the point?

There isn't ONE Crow. The comic series has many Crows so they could've simply made this a new Crow or used one of the many other Crows since they used one of them very obviously for inspiration.

This isn't Draven. That isn't Shelly and this movie is basically garbage on several fronts. And that's the real tragedy of this mess.

The crow 2024

Being a big fan of the original Brandon Lee version I think thos remake is a fantastic take on the story bringing a great cast together with some great acting, the action sequences are second to none and i find it a shame it was compared to the original. Its completely independent and brilliant, Bill Scarsgard is perfect for the role and I could quite easily see him in this role again, the DOP work is great and the whole entire feel of the movie is set in a more realistic environment, the music soundtrack is heavy and suits the movies tone to perfection, I would highly recommend this movie to any true action buffs who like a lot of gore.*****

Refreshing, fun and well done.

The original film will not go away because of this movie. The 2024 reboot is a fresh take, which is heavily inspired by the later graphic novels, so please watch this with an open mind.

The film does a few things better than the original - it develops characters and provides more depth to the love story. It also has an openly more fantastical premise, when things get weird, that definitely works. There are obvious nods to the 90s classic, and the soundtrack is one of them.

Too many people take this material way too seriously - it's an honourable addition to the canon and something new. Is it as good as the original? No. Is it a pleasant watch if you like comic-book based revenge flicks - absolutely.

It won't change your life, but it's a well made film that offers a memorable twist on the tale. Watch it with realistic expectations and you'll have a blast.

After all, remember - it can't rain all the time ...

I tried. Didn't work for me.

I like Bill Skarsgård as an actor and I'm feeling sorry for him that they completely wasted his talent here.

Although I'm also a huge fan of the original movie The Crow with Brandon Lee I tried to be as unbiased as possible and not to make any comparisons but instead look at it like a completely new movie.

Initially, I liked the idea of showing more of the story between Eric and Shelly but I had quite a hard time of getting warm with the female lead. However, while watching and waiting for the lovestory of a century to unfold on the screen my expectations were repeatedly let down. I don't know what fimmakers were thinking. I don't know what they aimed at. EVERYTHING about their storytelling was kept very shallow. They tried to depict broken characters falling in love while being intertwined in a brutal fight against evil but they only ever scratched at the surface of what an appealing narrative should be like.

They absolutely failed in telling the story about that pure and unconditional love between the leading roles. Mind you, a love so pure and innocent, so powerful, that it brings one back from the death to take revenge and wipe out the evil that separated the two loving souls in the first place.

They could have put that in a 5 min. Narrative: Why did they fall in love? Oh, uh... they both experienced veeery bad things. Anything else? Uh... yeah... they love to party and get stoned together! And that's why he's brought back? Yeah, he must kill them all!

I'm so sorry... nothing in this movie worked for me. And though I didn't want to I'm bound to make this one comparison: Each time I watch the original movie, I'm still moved. I want the kind of love that Eric and Shelly shared, I want the villains to suffer and die. I wallow in that dark and at the same time beautiful scenery of the whole movie.

Not with this one though. I just couldn't wrap up any kind of feelings, neither towards the main characters nor the villains. I just didn't care. Just like the movie makers obviously didn't care.

Instead of the crow name it the clown

This was honestly the worst movie we have watched in years. The story was pointless, the main character falls in love with a girl in 5 seconds, they are basically two junkies that we are supposed to feel for. But all we feel is cringe. We were expecting a good remake and all we got was spit in the face with a horrible movie. Do not waste your money and time unless you want to be disappointed I hope there is no second part to this. Leave it to the professionals. This director and writer need to go back to school. Worst script total trash.

Not only was the script bad, the costumes are very gen z and nothing to do with the 90s. This was also giving fake bootleg joker vibes. Skip it.

Dull, disappointing mess.

The Crow (2024) is a haphazardly put-together mess that just doesn't have the style and class the original film had. The whole film feels incoherent and lacks any real momentum. Some stilted acting, even though Bill Skarsgård tries his best, and the writing doesn't help. That being said, it does have a couple of great action sequences, especially the opera house scene, so that's something. Overall, the movie defines mediocrity-maybe not even that. If you really want to watch a Bill Skarsgård action movie, check out the criminally underrated "Boy Kills World" that movie was a blast and a half. This one, though, is just a disappointing mess-and not even the fun kind.

No where near as bad as you've been led to believe

"The Crow" was doomed from the start. How couldn't it have been? With the original film steeped in tragedy and already considered a classic of its time and of its genre, any sort of remake or reboot was predestined to be judged negatively even before its release. And all of the online banter about the 2024 "The Crow" only proves this point further; those who loved the original film were unimpressed and uninspired by this movie's trailer, and those who have never seen the Brandon Lee classic already made up their mind that it must be better than this reimagining. The relentless criticism resulted in "The Crow" underperforming and - may or may not - have additionally resulted in extremely poor critical reception. But is this film really as bad as the box office, and the critics, would have you believe? Honestly, no.

"The Crow" is unabashedly dour, dark, and violent. The culminating action sequence is so visceral in its depiction of blood and gore that my jaw found its way to the floor numerous times; gunshots are loud and result in brain matter splattered on the floor and the wall - sword slices are sharp and fling red like an abstract painting - fights can be quick and harsh, or painfully drawn out for all involved. The violence in "The Crow" is so graphic that I couldn't help but be both entertained and impressed by what I was witnessing, as I cannot remember the last time I saw a mainstream movie as violent as this one was.

With that said, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that "The Crow" is a slow burn, and for many, that will be this film's death knell. It takes quite a while for the action to kick in here, and when it does kick in, the first few action sequences are very quick bursts of violence instead of long set pieces. I can imagine this being a major detriment to some, but I didn't mind this much as, truth be told, I was having a good time with everything "The Crow" was throwing at me.

The majority of this film follows the relationship of Bill Skarsgård's Eric and FKA twigs' Shelly as they meet, fall in love, and spiral down a romantic rabbit hole of drug addiction, carefree living, and spontaneous sensuality - hey, it may not be everyone's ideal relationship, but it seems to work for them, and it also worked for me. I'm not one for illegal drugs, but I couldn't help but be endeared to the couple; both actors are conventionally attractive, and both actors had wonderful, romantic chemistry with each other that made me smile and giggle like a schoolgirl. And so, when the plot really kicks into high gear and the revenge aspect comes into play, I was really rooting for Eric to lay waste to his enemies.

Additionally, I was a big fan of both the soundtrack and the overall look, feel, and style of the film. Yes, the movie does seem like it was made to appeal directly to teenagers who still shop at Hot Topic, but as someone who would've been one of those teenagers if I had the opportunity, everything in this movie directly appealed to me; the scene where Eric finally applies his signature Crow makeup was just perfectly, appropriately moody, and I couldn't help but smile.

My only real complaint about "The Crow" is that it does feel like an over two hour long film that was edited down for brevity; there are some noticeable and bizarre edits that, at times, affect momentum, and I can only guess that the studio mandated the film to be under two hours. Other than that, I genuinely enjoyed "The Crow." Sure, it's a slow burn, and the action doesn't fully ignite until later in the film, but once it does, it's a blood-soaked spectacle that delivers. The chemistry between Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs anchors the film with a tragic love story that makes the revenge all the more satisfying. It may not be a perfect film, and it's certainly not for everyone, but for those willing to embrace its dark, stylized world, "The Crow" is a fun action film for fans of the genre.

The Crow, more like The NO!

Long sigh..... What are we doing here people, huh?

I'm not against redoing movies at all, but if you're going to do it please do it right. This movie was very bad in many ways, the misuse of actors. The Crow character was such a wimp, i kept saying maybe he'll get better, nope! The entire story, weak, the music, weak, I mean the opera setting with the opera music during the action scene was just horrible and down right annoying to say the least. I had many doubts going into this movie, but knew I just had to watch it to make sure. Boy was I let down, along with a ton of other people. Post movie, I'm still confused as to what I watched last night.

Form your own opinion ignore the trolls

If you just compare to the original then you will only be able to give a negative review. Original was a masterpiece and one of my favourite movies of all time.

The story of the crow is fascinating and captures audiences. I am happy that it has been put in the spotlight again.

A lot of fanboys dislike reboots and effectively gang up on films like this so the reviews have a low score. They think they are showing loyalty to a classic film when in reality all they are doing is damaging the franchise with their deluded actions.

I liked the main actor and he played the part well. It was a good choice for the villain but I feel they should have given more of a background with him.

The fight scenes were good but I would have liked to have seen him pick them off one by one a bit more. Some of the scenes with the bearded man seemed a little unnecessary. They wanted to explain what was going on but it could have been done better.

Overall I enjoyed watching this movie and I liked the actors. The reviews are sadly mostly biased. I strongly suggest you watch it and form your own opinion.

Another cult classic defiled

The original was good but not brilliant. Then again, which movies are? That said, it deservedly became a cult classic.

It's one of those movies that are almost begging to be made, with a new spin, bigger budget, more character development, and with CGI and better special effects available, yes please!

Unfortunately, this reboot falls flat and is no way near as good as the original.

The director's character development seems to focus solely on the intensity of the love between a couple. However, there is no intensity but only spoilt, shallow, brooding, and unsympathetic characters who don't seem to know the actual meaning of love. So as to why Eric was sent back to avenge but not others I clearly don't know.

Then the director fills the rest of the film with uninteresting no-meat-on-the-bones characters and by-the-numbers, weak script..

At some point, I cynically wondered if the director was one of those who cut their teeth making music videos. It seems I was right.

You're left feeling disappointed and quite angry that they screwed this up.

Not that bad as people saying.

It's not a reboot, story is different and u can see they spent time and money into it. For most of Us, Brandon is still and will stay the original Crow. But Bill A. Gave outstanding performance as a very talented actor it was expected. I see where is the issue in most of the people, it's about Girl and her skin colour. Me personally think she was amazing, it was not overacting her character. She gave what was needed. I would be happy to see a sequel of this. There's a lot opportunities in the stories and could make a great movies with a proper writer and director. There's no better person for it than the greatest christopher Nolan.

This isn't the original and that's okay.

After reading all the negative comments on here about how inferior to the original this remake was, I rewatched the original to refresh my memory and see what all the bluster was about. The original had NOT aged well. It almost borders on campy and certainly doesn't deserve the high IMBD rating it carries. Brandon Lee is fine but he is not acting it out of the park like some people keep professing. The problem is that this movie (and specifically Brandon Lee's performance) has been vaulted to an almost mystic lore status due to the tragic circumstances revolving around his death on the set. Like Heath Ledger's Joker, no one will ever be able to hold a candle to a Joker performance because he has also taken on a saint-like persona due to his tragic death. Sadly I think this is what has happened with the original Crow and why the remake never really stood a chance. Don't get me wrong - this version has its flaws but Bill and FKA twigs chemistry is FANTASTIC. There were a couple of storyline changes that I didn't like but not enough to make me hate the movie. Just stylistic and tonal changes I wouldn't have made had it been me. But, if you are considering watching this movie, go into it with an open mind knowing that this is nothing like the original movie and that's okay. Brandon Lee's legacy is not going to be lessened if you allow yourself to enjoy this, even if just a little bit.

Another unnecessary remake to a cult classic!

Okay here's the thing, I'm a massive fan of The Crow (1994) with the late Brandon Lee and it is genuinely one of the greatest superhero and horror movie of all time. This is one of those movies that should've been a one and done, but unfortunately Hollywood decided to not respect the legacy of Brandon Lee and gave us 3 unnecessary sequels with only Salvation (1998) being decent at best and the other two entries, City of Angels (1996) and Wicked Prayers (2000), being horrendous. Then, I heard about this remake and after seeing the first image of Bill Skarsgard as The Crow and the first trailer, I was dreading this movie because it looked like yet another desperate cash grab attempt by Lionsgate. So, I decided to watch the movie via CAM Version and it was horrible, but it wasn't as horrible as I was expecting it to be.

Positives for The Crow (2024): The gore and violence in this movie is actually pretty good especially in the opera house. The cinematography in this movie is very good. I will also give credit to Rupert Sanders for keeping the movie's setting safe throughout the entire production. And finally, this movie isn't the soulless remake that I was expecting it to be.

Negatives for The Crow (2024): First off, Bill Skarsgard is not that captivating as Eric Draven and yes while he wasn't terrible with his performance as this character, but he's not Brandon Lee. There was just an aura and presence surrounding Brandon Lee that made his performance in that original movie special, but in here Bill Skarsgard feels like a cheap imitation of Eric Draven. It also doesn't help that I couldn't take him seriously with his look in this movie. Then, you have FKA Twigs as Eric Draven's lover, Shelley Webster and she was so bland and boring in this movie. Danny Huston was such a lame villain in this movie and there are moments to where he will say his dialogue and it genuinely sounds like he didn't care at all, so my question is why are you in this movie if you're not going to put in the effort. The movie tries to be deep and emotional, but it just comes off as childish and empty And finally, I didn't feel any emotions while watching this movie, I was literally watching this movie with the most blank and emotionlessly expression on my face throughout the entire runtime.

Overall, there is literally no reason for this movie to exist and I honestly hope that this is the last time we ever see a Crow movie because there is just an aura surrounding that movie and the tragedy of Brandon Lee. This is one of the most pointless cashgrab by Lionsgate and they should be ashamed of themselves for even putting this movie into production.

Abomination is the only word too describe this movie...My wife and I went into this with an open mind as the original is one of our favorite films of all time...It ruined my wife's whole day to the point she had to come home and watch the original to get this abomination out-of her head...the love story or lack there of makes no sense the acting isn't Bill's fault he is a good actor but the story is HORRIBLE and lack of him in the crow makeup is even worse...and the original we understood the length of their relationship which in turn makes sense why he would come back a year later to avenge their love this movie is immediate...lions gate should offer refunds or free tickets to another movie as this should have went straight to streaming.
