Watching this movie made me wish I had attended film school, just so I could have the technical knowledge to effectively explain all the things that are wrong. The more I watched, the more confused I was. I was being generous when I gave it four stars. The acting and dialogue were ineffective. I do not understand the Emma character. She was confusing and near the end she was just all over the place.

There are so many holes in the script and so many questions throughout, that I'm unable to decide what the end really meant.

I want to walk away from a movie feeling like it was either completely believable or such a fantastic story that I'm willing to believe it because it was so well done - like The Sixth Sense. This was neither. I walked away from the movie asking why seasoned industry professionals put their names on this. And in the final credits...why was Monique credited three times for the same character? I don't even want to guess.

Watch this movie if you're a serious film student looking for a movie that is full of issues and things to not do when making a film. If you're a regular person, just find something else to watch...unless you enjoy train wrecks and dumpster fires.

I really don't know why this movie is getting such bad reviews? It was exactly how a horror should be. There was suspense and plot twist, and even had a little comedy. I especially liked how they did not waste their time getting to the point. I don't know if the negative reviews are because there's not blood and gore?

Or it's because people are typically use to films like this with a certain demographic not being as good and watched this one and is possibly upset that a certain demographic was able to produce a decent horror film with a good budget? Or possibly they didn't watch the previews of this movie and assumed it was going to be some Wayne Brothers comical spin on horror movies?

So this movie is not one to put on to fall asleep. It will keep you entertained to say the least. Def worth a watch worse case scenario you'll have something to talk about at the end and Monique is always a good watch. She was kinda corny at the end but ultimately I'd recommend. Especially if you have nothing else to watch. Oh lord so apparently I need more words..... soooo okay! Obviously if you can't tell l'm not a bot lol so watch the movie, enjoy and my goodness who knew I'd have to right 600 words just to leave a dang review. I guess I have to say last but not least ignore the bad reviews, Im not sure which movie they watched.

Just finished watching this movie and I am glad Monique has returned to the movie screen collaborating with Lee Daniels again. Unfortunately, this isn't necessarily what I wanted to for Monique as her comeback film. The movie's strengths are the super natural aspects & Monique's performance. That was quickly replaced by a confusing plot twist, sub par acting from other actors, non sensical sub plots, and pacing issues that caused me to yawn several times over! Monique's performance is scary at times and near comedic especially towards the end. I had subscribed to BET Plus to watch this, but quickly unsubscribed after it was over. This was a good bad movie...

This film was AMAZING! I Watched it several times!!! Courtney Glaude , the cast, crew did an amazing job! Loved it! Monique was very good in this! Everyone needs to go watch it!!!! Good Job !

My favorite part was at the table, the way she sat there and had that reading and didnt even realize what was about to happen. She did a 360 and it definitely was the highlight of the film! These kinds of films are what's needed in the film industry! I really hope they do a part 2 so we will know what's to come. I'm looking forward to see what Courtney comes up with next! Love it! Such an amazing creator/director.

This movie is pretty good there were a couple spots I was a little disappointed, but it was worth the watch for sure. I like up and down spots. I like the flip twist and I like the actors. Most of the acting was pretty decent. The women carried the movie for sure not to be rude. You know Mo'nique knows how to transform into her roles. She's very talented. I wish she was in more but we all know so sort of stupid story why.

The two young women killed it too I will look them up and keep an eye out for their skills as well. Some negs, I could tell the script writing and budget was a little lower, but smart to bring the professionals in to even it out som. Overall it's a good horror. Loved the scene at the table before it went down and loved the quack-a-doo trash talk coming from Mo the whole rest of the time. 😂😜

I need answers & I need them now. The best actor in this was Monique...and that's not a compliment.

Who convinced Monique that this was a good idea?

Why didn't Monique run when she read the script?

Why would put out such a good trailer only for this to end up being trash?

How was this movie ever made? Who paid for it?

Who every the casting person is, WHY? The movie starts off great. The idea that the girl could actually make contact with the dead was a good plotline but noooo, what does Lee Daniels & the writer do? Somewhere at the 35-40 minute mark, the story line shifts & becomes a comedy.

Absolutely atrocious. Horrible acting. Horrible writing. Everything about it is horrendous. The story isn't logical in any way. The fake speech problems by Monique after the home invasion come and go at any time apparently? But sometimes they are just emotions. Usually supposed to be some sort of cognitive issues though that is just horribly portrayed. The cast of "readers" is laughable. It's one of the worst movies I have ever watched. And there are a lot of bad bad bad movies out there. I mean put $100 into your film if you're going to spend the time writing and filming it. Good grief this was bad.

Great concept. HORRIBLE execution. I wanted to see Htown knock this out the park. I really was rooting for this. Now the People who rated this 10 lied to you. NOT FRIENDS, They are enablers. The will not help you reach the level you want to go too. There is a science to film, There are people who's already learned them. If you won't go to school, staff your weakness. You limit your success by not taking the time to study (school) your craft. Please take this as an opportunity for grow. I'm rooting for you. The only people whose saying filmmakers don't need school is the ones who didn't go. U got this.

If you want to see a good Black movie then watch BET's The Reading. Forget The Blackening, it's sucks.

The trailer for this movie made me want to see it so bad that I got a subscription to BET's streaming service just so I could see it.

BET's The Reading has emotion, sadness, creepiness, no sex or nudity (which is refreshing), the black characters have white friends, and there is a plot twist that I will not tell you about. It does have A LOT of foul language, but it does not seem gratuitous as it is a part of the characters culture. No one can say the F-word quite like Mo'nique LOL!

Don't miss this one, it's worth the money...and you can't say that about most movies made today.

Firstly, please remember this is a BET movie so expecting big budget imagery and writing and acting is ridiculous. So once I put on my Lifetime Movie, Tubi goggles I enjoyed it. Monique was surrounded by amateurs so of course she stood out. The entire production was beneath her but she made it work to the very end. Whomever did the casting could have brought in at least a more seasoned actress for the role of Sky. She was dead in the face like the girl from Twilight.

It is not what I thought it would be with the story but it was a decent twist. I would watch again to catch a few more inconsistent pieces and watch Monique.

Not the best psycho / horror movie I've ever seen but not the worst either. Don't recognize any of the actors but they did a decent job of their parts. The chasing down people was very typical as was the hiding in stupid places and waiting too long to take the killer out.

Felt like a first time, low budget movie for everyone involved but there's definite room for growth.

Is it going to be give me nightmares? Nope but then I don't scare easy.

Am I going to look any of these people up online and search for more movies that they are in? Nope. But then again if I should happen to see one of them in a trailer for something else I just might stop and take another look.

This movie is simply horrible.

The story is ridiculous.

It goes from drama to horror ro burlesque comedy in the course of 90 minutes.

And you will want to check out way before the dumb ending.

It's a waste of actor's time and worse -- a waste of OUR time. Plus it's made really really cheaplly The writer / director has ZERO talent and there is only one reason she was given the OK to make this movie.

They should be ashamed of themselves. It's a high school project put on television.

Why these actors agreed to be in this fiasco boggles the mind. They could not have thought this was a worthy vehicle!

And what's with the phony reviews giving this a 10? No one in their right mind would do that. Unless they worked on the film.

WTF! I did not expect this twist. This movie kind of messed me up. It's 4am and I'm looking around corners of my house while watching this movie lol. With the reading at first, I'm like oh hell no! Then Mo'Nique did her thing and changed the whole movie. Mo'Nique played this role very well.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿. But...how dude get shot in the chest and still running around the house trying to hide. 🤣🤣. I don't know an Emma's buy of I met one, I definitely not messing with her. This is the first film I've seen with Mo'Nique in awhile. What a way to come back. Hope to see more of her talent shine. Loved this film.

Maybe it's because I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about it. Maybe it's because I've never seend this side of Monique, whatever the reason, The Reading is a lot better than I thought it would be. I wouldn't call it a horror but as a thriller it delivered with solid performances esp from the two leading ladies, tension and solid pacing for the first two acts. Monique elevates what could've been just another meh story with the kind of performance I wished Mama delivered. To each his own but I think the bad reviews are a bit too harsh so I recommend checking this one out for yourself.

Monique was great , the others not so much . If they took another direction with this for instance , if they would of kept the narrative of the break in and she helped find the killers 1 by 1 and Monique would go out and kill them secretly but the plot twist is she hired them . Another ideas would be she was a loving mother who just wanted revenge, last plot twist she was possessed and the made it an exorcist type flick lol. I gave it a 5 star because I feel like had Monique had a better cast and better script it would of been a great movie but she still made it work with the scraps she was given and momma made miracles every thanksgiving.
