Heads of State

Heads of State is an extremely silly film. It's not entirely sure if it's a pure comedy or a serious thriller. So tonally at the beginning I wasn't sure what i was in for. Having said that I laughed out loud more than once, lots in fact. I winced at the fight scenes and the really cheesy "let's all put our differences aside" moment. Then i cheered the good guys all the way to the fulfilling Easter egg at the end. I've given it a 9 because I watched it at the right moment and enjoyed it a lot. It's got a good cast with equal opportunities for both the goodies and badies. It's not going to win anyone an Oscar but it will happily fill 117 minutes, so give it a try!

As an A-list action hero and so-called "leader of the free world," John Cena is a comical liability to Idris Elba's by-the-book, no-room-for-error Prime Minister-a stickler whose patience for his partner's Hollywood theatrics is virtually nonexistent. The chemistry between the two leads feels very reminiscent of their past roles in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

The plot itself is something we've seen in other buddy comedies: two completely different men, both facing seemingly impossible odds, are forced to work together. Along the way, they gradually find common ground through humor and reluctant camaraderie.

At times, the film leans too heavily on jokes rather than allowing the story to unfold naturally. From fourth wall breaks to some outright outrageous events, the film clearly doesn't take itself too seriously.

That said, everyone involved clearly understood the assignment. The fun they had making the movie translates well onscreen. It's an entertaining, action-packed date-night film-perfect for turning your brain off, cracking open a bottle of champagne, and enjoying with some fish and chips.

Probably John Cena's best movie that I have seen. More action than you can beat with a tree trunk you've just pulled out of the ground.

I think the fact that Cena's character is a new president / former action star helps get over what I normally consider his bad acting. Actually works for this, and I really enjoyed the on-screen chemistry between Idris Elba and Cena.

Ignore some of the dodgy effects (not all bad tbh), and well, you're not seeing this for the perfectly written story and Oscar worthy acting are you?

Go in with your eyes open for what it is and it's a highly enjoyable watch at movie.

If it wasn't for the A listers, this film would just be very unappealing to the majority. I only watched it because of the cast and I knew what to expect. I wasn't wrong.

This film is insanely cringeworthy. But it is just a bit of fun. Silly action scenes with over the top CGI. It does try very hard to be comedic but I am sure it is to a child. It shocks me that this is rated PG 13 as it has some brutal scenes with the violence but they aren't graphic.

A 6/10 is generous but it was a but of fun. If you have seen any 'comedy action' before, you will be able to predict the whole movie. Trust me.

I also gave it a 6 because even though it is a politically heavy film with the 2 best friend nations coming together, it has zero actual politics in the film. Which shocks me because usually there is something lefty these days in most television now...maybe they're learning.

Worth a watch, but no need to rush for it.
