The cramped existence that the Jewish hideouts were forced to endure during WWII and the Nazi period, is excellently portrayed by a cast of sensitive actors who were fortunate to have a good script to work with.

Ellie Kendrick makes an excellent Anne, bearing a good resemblance to the Jewish girl who loved writing and kept a daily diary of events in the attic where her parents and a some other neighbors were forced to stay. Leslie Sharp and Nicholas Farrell as the Van Daans are particularly moving members of the strong cast.

The gradual maturity of a girl confronting her feelings about boys as she grows up is portrayed in a poignant and tender manner. The story is compelling from the start and increases in intensity as various conflicts among the attic inhabitants arouse hostility and anger.

What might have made the whole drama even more intense would be outdoor scenes outside the confines of the attic showing how the villagers were being treated by the Nazis, but since those incidents would be outside the scope of Anne's diary the drama remains intimate instead with a narrower focus.

Well worth viewing even if you've seen the big screen version made by George Stevens in 1959.

Sixty-three years after the death of Anne Frank, this drama presents the story of her years in hiding in five half-hour episodes, which focus in depth on the events within the annex above her father's factory.

Newcomer Ellie Kendrick plays Anne as a fiery teenager, struggling with inner conflicts and her emerging sexual feelings. This couldn't be presented as clearly in earlier adaptations, and I think this is the first version to use pages of the diary as source material which were originally suppressed by Anne's father, the only person of the eight in the annex to survive the war.

Iain Glen and Tamsin Grieg are both superb as Anne's parents, while Margot (Felicity Jones) and Peter Van Daan (Geoff Breton) present their characters' limited facets very well. Ron Cook, Lesley Sharp, and Nicolas Farrell play the remaining refugees (Mr and Mrs Van Daan, and dentist Mr Dussell).

You get a real sense of what it is to live in a confined space, largely in silence, with only a few hours of respite to go downstairs for food (Peter has to take potatoes from the warehouse below), and to talk and live together in some semblance of real life. For three years this was the life for eight individuals and a cat living in close proximity, sometimes with hope, sometimes with fear.

Rightly, this series ends with details of what happened to each of the refugees, and does not flinch from making clear the plight of the Jews outside of the annex, who are taken away in the night and herded into transports towards their death - such a fate also awaits the occupants of the Dutch annex, and it is with a heavy heart we realise this at the end - even though we knew it all the time, we lived in hope along with them.

''The Diary of Anne'' (2009) is an accurate adaption of Anne Frank's diary. It's a very nice movie. I am very much interested about Anne Frank and I've seen six movies about Anne Frank. The 2009 adaption of Anne's diary is a fine one. Although it is not as excellent as ''Anne Frank: The Whole Story'' (2001), it is a very moving miniseries and can give the audience a clear idea about Anne Frank. The casting was excellent. Ellie Kendrick- I have no words to describe her- gave an amazing performance as Anne Frank. Really, Ellie is a talented young actress. I'd also like to praise the performances of Felicity Jones who played Margot Frank, Geoff Breton who played Peter van Daan and Tamsin Greig who played Edith Hollander Frank. And Nicholas Ferrell, who played Albert Dussel, also gave a wonderful performance. Lesley Sharp who played Petronella van Daan and Kate Ashfield who played Miep Gies also gave wonderful performances. The casting was, in short, excellent. The story was also arranged in such a way that we liked the movie very much. But I'd like to say that ''Anne Frank: The Whole Story'' and ''The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank'' were better than ''The Diary of Anne Frank'' (2009), but still, the 2009 adaption was indeed a nice one and I liked it. I'd like to give the movie: 7 out of 10.

Just finished watching episode 5 on BBC i-player. I've been familiar with the story of Anne since I was a child, but I've never seen it told so simply or movingly as it has been over the past five nights on BBC2. I'm a cynical 45 yr old bloke, and there's honestly not much that can make me cry... I'll just have to tell my girlfriend that I've got a cold. Sensitive writing and a superb cast turned this into something special... excruciatingly sad, wonderfully uplifting.

How can anyone endure the petty posturing of Celebrity Big Brother after watching this? So am I really the only person to be posting about this?

This was an utterly stunning piece of television. It kept my whole family absolutely gripped from Monday to Friday making us laugh, cry and think as we watched Anne's story unfold. Its real strength was the lack of sensationalism and romanticisation. The final episode was as nerve shredding as any thriller and totally heartbreaking. Anne was an irritating character at times with typical teenage behaviour. Her prodigious talent was in no doubt and the fact that she was otherwise normal actually made her seem that little bit more special. Ellie Kendrick was absolutely marvellous in the role of Anne. A real talent for the future without doubt. The other actors were equally superb with none of them striking a false note. This should be required viewing for everyone. Children, especially, will relate to Anne's humane and forthright views on everything including sex. I just hope that the moral majority in the US don't mess too much with that part of it because of that, as it is integral to the life of this exceptional person.

I've always heard fascinating rumors about Anne Frank and her life living during the Holocaust but I never really found the strength to pick up her book and read her firsthand knowledge about what really happened and what it was like living under bombs. When I found there was a movie on Netflix about her that was young adult friendly, I was more than interested to watch the movie.

Director Jon Jones intends for this movie to inform young audiences about the headstrong young lady, Anne, played by Ellie Kendrick and her struggles and emotions while living in a Dutch underground with more than just her family, while still obtaining the feeling and normality of a regular teenage girl.

After receiving a diary for her birthday Anne is constantly writing all her thoughts and feelings about her now not normal life after finding out that they must go into hiding due to business with her father Otto, played by Iain Glen. With the help from Miep Gies who helps the family hide, Anne's curiosity about the outside world astonishes her and leads her to find out new things about her self and her body. This sassy teenager will not be pushed around and is not afraid to make sure things are fair even if she gets punished.

This film had me at the edge of my seat and I was anxious to see whats happened next. This movie is great for younger audiences and it has an accurate portrayal of what life was like in hiding. Anne will bring our your curious side and you will connect with her as she unravels the truths of the heart.

My wife read the Diary of Anne Frank last year for English class, and when we visited Amsterdam we went to see the house.

The house in this TV series is exactly the same as the real house, almost to the extent that I wonder if they filmed it there.

The story as told in this series is very close to the book and shows Anne as she shows herself in her diary. An intelligent, boisterous, moody, lively teenage girl.

The fact that she was SO full of energy and ideas and yet was cooped up in those rooms for so long is the really moving thing about the book I think and they have captured it very well in the series.

This BBC drama feels completely authentic, I can't think of anything to criticise it about at all!

I love a good TV drama, and The Diary of Anne Frank is that. Along with Occupation, it was one of the highlights of 2009, having been profoundly moved and disturbed by the events detailed in Anne Frank's diary since I was a little girl in primary school, this was a harrowing, poignant, sensitive and wonderfully acted mini-series that stayed true to the book. The mini-series is exquisite to look at, stunning costumes and settings, and the house was exactly like the house in real life. The writing is unusually sensitive, I never felt the mini-series got overly-dramatic or overly-sentimental, quite the opposite, and I think the writing really helped with that. The direction is excellent, and the music is haunting and evocative. It was the acting though where the Diary of Anne Frank really soared. Ellie Kendrick, instead of the obnoxious teenager she could have been, made for an intelligent yet somewhat lively Anne, very like the Anne in the book. Iain Glen is charming as the perfect father figure and Tamsin Grieg is luminous and quiet as the mother. Lesley Sharp is exceptional as Petronella, a selfish and independent matriarch, her actions were very entertaining. Then there is the sudden discovery, even for those who had read the book it was emotional, intense and sudden. Overall, this is a brilliant mini-series, in my opinion it is a must see! 10/10 Bethany Cox

There can't be many people who haven't heard of the story of Anne Frank. The 13 year old girl from a Jewish family who, to avoid evacuation from Holland by the Nazis, hid with her family in the rooms above her fathers business for 2 years before being caught. The diary she kept during this period was published after the war and has since been translated into a number of languages and has become the most widely read piece of non-fiction apart from the Bible.

The rights to the story are rarely available and it's pleasing that this new production transmitted on the BBC over five half-hour episodes on consecutive nights is a great example of quality, thought provoking and moving television that should be enjoyed by all.

Ellie Kendrick stars as Anne, the teenage daughter of Otto (Iain Glen) and Edith Frank (Tamsin Greig). In her diaries Anne comes across as a precocious teenager, sometimes impertinent and always with something to say regardless of other peoples feelings and Ellie Kendrick's performance captures this perfectly. She is a teenager after all and we get to know all her growing pains through her diary entries. Iain Glen is the solid and almost perfect father and is amiably assisted by Tamsin Grieg as a quiet and dependable mother. The supporting cast including Lesley Sharp, Ron Cook and Geoff Bretton as the Van Daans are all exceptional, particularly Lesley Sharp whose performance as the selfish and head strong Petronella was always entertaining. The production values were first rate and the recreation of the rooms where the families lived really made you appreciated how claustrophobic, stressful, and monotonous their daily lives must have been. As the series concludes and you get more and more attached to these characters the sudden discovery of the secret annex by the police is well handled and very emotional.

A very strong series that is never preachy or over-dramatic and which I hope is transmitted in as many countries as possible. Highly enjoyable and recommended.

I downloaded all five episodes to iPlayer. I didn't know any background about the dramatisation but with going by the title alone, and from the BBC, guessed it ought to be worth watching.

I have just watched the first two parts and after the first 30 minutes I decided to do some research. As the official BBC about page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/annefrank/about.shtml) confirms to me, the show is aimed at a young age group. I feel the show so far has a very educational bent, as if it's one of those old BBC2 educational shows aimed at school children. As the BBC webpage confirms, with links to the war timeline, other resources and how many of the comments are by children, the similar age to Anne.

Although it must have been a breath of fresh air to share such a cramped and hostile apartment with such a lively and outgoing young girl, I feel there is an overly joyous and 'look on the bright side' perspective to the directing. To me it detracts from the importance of the subject and as other reviewers have suggested, turns it almost into a SOAP like format.

The filming is done very well, and the actors play the parts well. It is a good, stock BBC production there. The one downside to the acting is it's just too 'English'; a bit of a put-on Dutch, German accent or more prominence to other languages around them, would've been more realistic for me.

However, my real gripe is the lack of a dark side. All the dialogue is very clear and carefully spoken, both in terms of diction and subject. Perhaps this is just the view from a young girls diary, but I feel the true impact, grittiness and any reality is missing.

I am struggling to continue to watch to be honest. If I hadn't already downloaded the series I think I would've changed channel already. It is lacking in suspense, or rawness. It's all too jolly. So far.

Maybe I'll change my mind as the series progresses, but as I say, if I hadn't already downloaded I certainly wouldn't stay in to catch the next episode.

Another reason I'll continue to watch is because of the other reviews, you're all so impressed with it! Maybe it does become more gripping.

One can only be grateful to the BBC, which (along with a lot of rubbish) produces so many worthwhile, thoughtful and carefully crafted programmes.

This is one of them. The story of Anne, her family, Peter's family and the dentist has been dramatised with great attention to detail and sensitivity. The sets seem to be exact recreations of the real hiding place in Amsterdam.

Ellie Kendrick is a great find as Anne. She is quite a good look-alike and convincingly acts Anne's personality. This version is far from painting her as a saint. She is portrayed as quite selfish and petulant, and cruel towards her mother. This seems to be truthful.

Most of the rest of the cast are good, and are also have quite a good resemblance to the real people they represent.

I only have doubts about the actor playing Peter. He is way too old for the part. A man of 24 is not suitable to play a boy of 16, try as he might. To make matters worse, his face seems to have been painted pink and white to make him seem younger, but this merely looks unnatural.

However, this is a minor blemish in a very good production.

the best BBC production in years. They have definitely out done them self this time. This is a must see video/series. If you are into history you MUST WATCH IT! Ellie Kendrick was amazing! so was Tamsin Greig. I always loved to see her in black books, but this performance was just amazing. It still made me go out buy buy all three series again!

This was just broadcast in one go, the original episodic partitions merged into one showing as part of the Masterpiece series on PBS. I didn't actually get to see the whole thing, coming upon it as I did part way through. At first I did not know what it was about, but something quickly seemed compelling and it wasn't long before the story became evident to me. Then I stayed up much too late, unable to turn away.

If you don't know the story, read the book first. If you do then you don't need me to tell you what it is about. But concerning this production, it blew me away. It is beautifully crafted and sensitively acted. The character of Anne and her interaction with those around her during a truly bizarre time is disarming and haunting. My big plasma screen may have helped, but it was the nature of the production and the intensity of the story that really pulled me in, making me feel I was in the same space with them, as a silent observer to the ups and the downs, the warmth and the tension, the joy and the anger, the hope and the fear.

The ending was a nice touch. Everyone was accounted for. I could feel a sense of grief and a sense of closure, knowing the aftermath of what Anne was able to record.

Happened across this on BBC so thought I would give it a viewing.

Switched off after 10 minutes as Anna's annoying plum in the mouth English accent was grating through me.

Brilliant series, emotional, great acting, fantastic music and cinematography. Giving a real feel of claustrophobia and how life for them really was. It's not offensive or disrespectful in its portrayal of anti Jewish measures taken by the Nazis and it doesn't hold back or sugar coat the reality. Although the story of Anne Frank is a tragedy underscoring what the world lost because of the Nazis and the Holocaust, there are also many positive messages in the film. The Franks, Van Daans, Mr. Dussel, and their friends who helped hide them are all reminders that even during the most horrible situations people can remain hopeful.

10/10: An epic blend of comedy, action and hard hitting emotional scenes.

I think i have seen many accounts of the sweet story and certainly have seen the full account of their ending. However, I have seen this on youtube and once again entranced by the wonderful portrayal of all the players in the story. The horror is in our minds throughout, still, to embrace the joys and frustrations of a young girl and the emerging feelings of young love is to embrace a part of us all.
