Nicolas F. Costoglou actually knew the short story, because he had to write an essay about in school many years back. The problem was that he liked the idea of what the story represents, but never the story itself, so he wrote his own version in a more metaphorical style and just used the most important key moments.
He and
Rilona Puppe thought it to be too loosely based on the original story, hence there's no mention of it in the actual movie.
