Life of Ryan

I've seen little bits and pieces of this crap reality show while channel-changing, and the first thing that struck me was how dull it is. The buffoons at MTV must be running out of ideas. An all-American "Sk8er Boi" is the focus of attention but he never has anything interesting to say. He is just a dumb (i.e. typical) 21st century kid, utterly clueless about everything, without the necessary charisma or sense of humour to keep anyone's attention. Anyone's, except those teeny-boppers who probably made sure this crap didn't die an instant death with very low ratings. The less said about his idiotic mother, the better... The father also serves as a major clue as to why Ryan turned out to be such a bright cookie; he looks like an out-of-shape WWF wrestler. Ryan's narration is comically stilted, very fake-sounding, as if he were reading off a paper - someone else's text! It also sounds as if he is addressing the mentally-challenged and 3 year-olds. The obvious acting in front of the cameras doesn't help either. I'd be surprised if this snooze-fest is/was given a second season. Who cares whether Ryan sells the house or not? What high drama...

There should be an extensive survey/study of skaters' IQs. The results would be predictable, but I'd love to find out just how low...

this guy has a life to kill for,I'v watched every episode and was stoked when i seen season one previews and was stoked but soon was sadly let down.All this guy does is complain about how bad his life is and how no girls will date him,well for those of you who have not been the dew action tour let me clue you in,every girl at these events is in love with him and wait at his hotel for him,now I'm sure 95% of these girls are not dating material but for him to say he cant find a girl couldn't be further from the truth.Hes buying a house at 18 that most of us could never afford,he has a range rover and several other cars,but yet he still finds stuff to complain about,now i know money doesn't buy happiness but it sure helps,bottom line is this show either portrays Ryan in a bad light through editing or this guy is what we see on TV an ungrateful spoiled brat,p.s.the show has already jumped the shark.

By 2007, MTV was pivoting fully from music videos, music documentaries, and music news, to nothing but reality shows. With Laguna Beach and the Hills under their belts and Rob Dyrdek's Rob & Big a hit, MTV rolled out a reality show featuring 18 year old pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler.

Sheckler was under 18 when filming started, so events such as high school prom were covered. As Sheckler turned 18, the show focused on his career, business ventures, and the purchase of his first home. Add in his parents divorce, friendship drama, multiple relationships and breakups, and you have a pretty solid, entertaining offering in a 20 minute weekly episode. Skateboarding is covered, but it is not really the main point of the show, so if you're interested in the show because you want to watch a skate video, you'll be a bit let down. It's a behind the scenes look at Sheckler's life, circa 2007-2009, with a little bit of MTV reality spice mixed in. I enjoyed watching it when it first aired and have watched it multiple times since, it's a good easy show to have on in the background. I'd rank this show right up there with the best of MTV's reality offerings of the era.

Unfortunately this series is not streaming anywhere, but you can easily find a copy of the 3 season DVD on Amazon or eBay for a very fair price.

At age 13, skateboarder Ryan Sheckler was a novelty when he beat Eric Koston on the street course at X-Games. But at age 18, he's a just another painfully dull teenage celebrity. The relationship with his parents appears to exist purely as business deals and his friends look like a carefully selected entourage of trust fund babies. Skateboarding, in fact, has become an aside. Assuring audiences that he's trying to live life as the normal teenager despite circumstances (a stupid comment to make once releases are signed to allow the superficial voyeurism to begin with), Life of Ryan is your typically scripted "unscripted" Reality-TV show where otherwise idiotic teenage drama is milked for all its worth. Even Ryan's friends (including fellow skateboarders) look increasingly bored of the nauseating discussion of girlfriends and divorce. It's all Ryan all the time.
