The movie was originally meant to have a worldwide theatrical release on September 24, 2021, with Paramount Pictures being its distributor. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatrical release was canceled, and Netflix bought the rights to debut the movie onto their streaming platform. Russia was the only country to screen the movie in theaters.

In the film, a minor character introduces himself as Rob. The character was voiced by director Rob Cullen, who used the scene to make a director's cameo.

Sunny Starscout's father dies prior to the main events of the film, and his death affects his daughter considerably. The film also depicts the mother of co-protagonists Zipp and Pipp (who are sisters) and the mother of antagonist Sprout as single mothers. Meaning that none of the film's main cast has an active father or father figure.

The Unicorn filly Izzy has a similar color scheme and cutie mark to the G1 Pony named Buttons.

In the film, Sunny Starscout and Izzy Moonbow are briefly locked in a dungeon by Queen Haven. The scene is somewhat humorous, as they are surprised that their dungeon has luxurious furniture and pleasant decorations. The queen does not mistreat her prisoners in any way.
