Froutopia!!! The best series ever made! If you think that, The Usual Suspects and Carol Reed's The Third Man are great movies, then just take a look at this. The episodes of Froutopia were supposed to be made for young kids and the entire series is shot using puppets, but you will not be disappointed. The remarkable thing is that the script and the ideas presented made the story of Froutopia to be the number-one story under discussion among the Greek and Cypriot people that grew up during the decade between 1985 and 95 (and honestly I cannot think of anyone of my age that was not watching it). There is a whole generation that is talking about the numerous twist scenes and of course the unbelievable endings for the three seasons of the series. I have first watched it when I was 8 and then 12 years old, and now 17 years later I have gone through the same amazing feeling by watching the whole thing again. I remember back then when some of the kids were scared of Froutopia and the rest were obsessed with it. Personally, I believe that, Evgenios Trivizas (the writer who created the characters), deserves at least an honorary award for this contribution to that thing called entertainment. Now I have also appreciated the art direction of Faidon Sofianos and his puppet gallery crew, since there are so many clever and hilarious details hidden around the puppets in the set; on the corner as the mob is passing by, or on some random signs on the walls, etc. Try to get a copy of this hard-to-find TV series, but if you do, you will be amazed by how perfect it is. It is too bad that this is addressed only to Greek speakers (excuse my English by the way), since a subtitled or dubbed version would have lost some of its prestige (but do try to see it anyway). Pikos Apikos Rulezzzzzzz!!!

Evgenios Trivizas and Nikos Maroulakis created a 50 issue comic book, named "Froutopia" in 1983. It was about a country where walking and talking actual fruits and vegetables lived in, some humans trying to take over their country and some other humans, like Pikos Apikos the journalist helping them out.

The comic was converted into a series by the extremely talented Sofianos family in 1985 for the Greek public television as a puppet show.

This is not your ordinary puppet show. The best the Greek TV and theater had to offer lend their voices. The settings were full of detail and life. The script and dialogue is extremely smart and mature, full of comedy, plot twists, drama, dealing with war, life and death. Character development is top notch and you forget that you're watching puppets after a few minutes.

On the down side, you have to understand Greek fluently and have a good understanding of Greek culture to get all the clever jokes.

If you do, this is one of the best series ever made, in any language. Watching it again, 30 years after its premiere, its still fresh, timeless and amazing.

It really is one of the things where the stars aligned properly, the right people got together and created a once in a lifetime masterpiece.
