Seagal is almost back.

Steven Seagal's career post Under Siege has been one in constant need of resurgence. On Deadly Ground was greeted with acid tongued derision from critics, thus followed up by Under Siege 2, an upturn, though still unfavourable in comparison to the first. Exit Wounds followed another string of poorly received outings. Then the downward spiral hit high gear with the odd (and only slight) upturn in films like Belly Of The Beast and Into The Sun. In 2007 it's seemingly a crunch moment. Seagal needs an upturn. His fan base is in danger of decimating, perhaps jumping ship to Jean Claude, Wesley or Dolph, heck maybe even Don Wilson when you consider how bad Attack Force was. Urban Justice needed to be decent, needed to hit the high notes. But did it? Well overall…it kinda did. Not to say it's a great film by any means, but it's an upturn in fortune for Seagal, and most importantly, the man himself really comes out of his corner throwing some big shots again. He's not been out for the count quite yet, and with a few rounds left in him, maybe he can still turn this fight in his favour (nice analogy huh?).

Urban Justice firstly steers clear of the trend of Seagal's post Exit Wounds flicks, and that is CIA/FBI conspiracy subplots that eat away at the pacing and clarity of his recent flicks. This plot line is simple, straight and laid out. Seagal's son gets killed, and he wants the killer, nothing more. There's nothing too much on the side that gets in the way of Seagal getting from A to B. Secondly the film features Seagal as prominently as a leading man actually should feature, both in screen time (some of his recent flicks have him disappear for sometimes 15 minutes at a time!) and ADR participation (no dubbing this time folks). Above all Seagal manages to bring back some of his charisma that had seemingly been left behind in the early 90's somewhere along with Kelly Le Brocks hotness. Seagal's cool again, he's badass! Sure a little chunky and sweaty still, but he kicks ass! The action in this film is pretty good too. There's a plethora of hand to hand fights, which believe it or not, actually feature Seagal himself! Yes amazing given recent history. His stand in, stunt double and ADR double sat around twiddling there thumbs in this picture, and that's good. Seagal fans don't want those guys too busy. The fights are pretty decent though and Seagal unleashes some pretty savage beat-downs. We get vintage moves here. He breaks every conceivable bone in the human body during this flick, a femur on one guy, and a couple of ribs on another and so on. Best and coolest of all is the fact that Seagal once again looks like he could kick most guys assess! He's quick in this film I'm telling you. It's that old school Seagal who can virtually stand on the spot, but a few lightening moves of the arms and hands, and big ol' size 16 boots from no where, and the bad guys are floored. The fights are well edited and though tightly shot, they pack a punch, and the sound design is top notch. As for the rest of the action, we have disappointingly lame car chase. Not so much down to budget, but down to a complete lack of any kinetic energy and imaginative stunt work. The shoot outs are almost Hard Target insane! Meaning entire clips are unloaded on each individual bad guy, and blood shoots out all over the damn place! In fact the blood impacts in this film are the most insane I've ever seen and totally illogical, but I love it. It's the kind of super-violence Seagal used to produce. Seagal also gives his best performance in a few years. He seems interested, engaged and as I said shows off his charisma here.

The director Don E Fauntleroy was previously responsible for two of Seagal's shoddiest works. His inclusion in this was a worry, but while those first two collaborations with Big Pappa lacked any real autuership of any kind, here it's different. Fauntleroy manages to project some vision here, some style. We're not talking Scorsese, but for these sorts of flicks he's serviceable. Elsewhere the co-stars are not too bad. In particular there's a decent cameo from Danny Trejo, while Eddie Griffin makes for a somewhat cartoony but well suited villain.

On the negative side, though the plot is very simple, it's simplicity should have lent itself to a quicker pace of movie. The mid section suffers some lag, with too many gangster based dialogue scenes. That might not have been so bad if anything important was being said, and also the script is problematic in that the hip hop dialogue isn't very realistic. It's as if the writer knew only a couple of hood words and decided to repeat them endlessly. "Aaaaaaariiiiggghhht", "Mother-f**ker" and in particular "n***er" are words that are overused to levels of almost annoyance. The relationship between Seagal and his snitch and also landlady could have been developed but instead feel needless and pasted in. Above all it would have been a few more scenes with Seagal. Elsewhere the score is pretty bad. It's a rush job without question and one that jars against the competent direction, editing, and an in form Seagal.

Overall this isn't exactly a great film, but in Seagal's recent canon, it's top notch. Importantly, the man himself is back to his old self again. If a better film can be put around him, he'll surely be able to deliver a film to rival his best ones. As it is, Urban Justice is a welcome filler and good solid Saturday night home entertainment. Coming from one of Seagal's harshest (though I maintain, realist) fans, that's saying something. **1/2

much better than attack force still not great though

Steves last two films (flight of fury, attack force)where how can i say completely rubbish. so one i saw renegade justice in a DVD shop i was a bit reluctant to buy it but i thought to myself give it a try it could be good.so i bought it and hoped for the best lets just say renegade justice is 10 million times better than attack force and flight of fury. but that still doesn't mean it is Seagals comeback far from it.the plot is simple a young cop is shot dead in a drive by shooting in a rough neighbourhood. Seagal plays Simon a mysterious man who wants revenge on the people who shot and killed his son. the film is an improvement compared to his recent movies for instance Seagal is actually doing his own fight scenes without the help of body doubles. also there is no dubbing from someone who sounds nothing like Seagal. but there some annoying parts like when every character speaks they start a sentence with the word mother****er and end every sentence with the word to. also when a person dies they die in an slow motion sequence that really got on my nerves.still not his best but a big improvement lets hope his next film is a bigger improvement.

Yep, another generic Seagal movie...

If you have seen any one Steven Seagal movie, then you basically have seen them all. This movie follows the stereotypical Seagal recipe of how to make an action movie. You take away a man's most important thing in the world, and that man will take on a whole gang land neighborhood and emerge victorious.

Yep, it most definitely is an average Seagal movie, as he beats everyone, regardless of their skill and weaponry. And he only gets shot once, of course, while he himself takes down numerous gang members.

The story is about Simon Ballister (played by Steven Seagal) who moves into a neighborhood under gang domination, after his son was shot dead here. As the local police is unable to uncover the murderer, Simon takes matters into his own hands and sets out to find his son's murderer, taking down everyone who stands in his way.

The typical solo Seagal hero against overwhelming odds. But hold your horses, this time is he is not an ex-Black Op, ex-CIA agent, or ex-whatever. No, to add mystery, we don't get any information on his background or how come he singlehandedly defeats a whole neighborhood.

"Urban Justice" is filled with ridiculous blood sprays whenever someone is shot. The blood sprays several feet away from the one injured, both in front and back. Yeah! That's what I thought too. That was just lame.

The action teddy bear (Seagal) does deliver his usual performance, both in acting and in fighting sequences. "Urban Justice" is good enough entertainment, taking into consideration that this is a very average Seagal movie.

just because it makes sense doesn't mean its good!!

I can understand why Stevo fans have given this a good rating because it is an easily digestible film unlike his normal messily edited attempt at action classics like Shadow Man and Submerged... I have seen all the stevo's and this is definitely just under average (subjective to Stevo films). He is trying, but there is a total lack of imagination in this film. The fight scenes are pretty unimaginative with Stevo doing a lot of donkey kicks that aren't really used in Aikido, He's to fat to do all these kicks!!! And there is a really boring car chase and an even more boring shootout at the end where he just stands still while bad guy's walk through the same door one at a time getting shot! What happened to his unique style that got everyone hooked like in Marked for Death and Out For Justice. The music is awful and detracts from what is happening in the story which is hard because there isn't much of a story at all! No no no!

Even though Stevo films aren't amazing at least they usually have imagination!! I thought Submerged was better than this film its got a lot of potential in the story and some great supporting actors and action although ruined by lousy editing... Urban Justice stands out as a Stevo film because it is well edited even thought the Story and the Screenplay are really dull, it is just a breath of fresh air for Stevo fans because his films are so formulaic and this film is slightly different to his usual offering.

Real fan review

Just saw this movie and wasn't expecting much as his films since exit wounds have been abysmal in my opinion, i haven't even watched flight of fury because by that point i gave up and just started watching the old seagal films when he used to do his own fighting an speech.well this film is a near return to form, its action packed very violent loads of seagal kicking ass, and i didn't spot one voice over, the acting wasn't bad either it is definitely his best film since exit wounds. Steven is still pretty out of shape but he pulls this movie off, there is loads of hand to hand combat, guns, knives and car action. Eddie Griffin does a good job as a gang boss and ads some decent humour to the movie. Don't get me wrong this is no masterpiece and some of the fighting is speeded up but i think real seagal fans will love this and will see it as a very big step in the right direction.

I'm giving 0/10

A friend recommended this movie. I'll send Seagal round his home to give him a good seeing to. If it was possible I'd give this film 0/10 When was this made in the 70's? Everything was dire about this movie. Seagal stiff as a board, did he eat all the pies? Acting was appalling all round, the black hair dye joined in with a bit of overacting. Was there a storyline? I didn't care about any of the flat characters. I know not to expect too much from a Seagal movie but no words can describe how excruciatingly awful this was. Being a sadist I stuck with it to the end only to see if it got any worse and I was right! What a waste of an evening.

July Force with Steven Segal

This is more like the Steven Seagal that I used to enjoy in the early 90s in films like Hard to Kill, Out for Justice and Marked for Death. He actually is this movie and appears in almost every scene.

Apparently he has run through enough dead wives that no one would marry him, so he is after the person who killed his son. He is a determined killing machine.

As expected from a film that features urban gangs, every other word is f*cker or motherf*cker. I actually think they have beaten Scarface with this film.

The only real criticism I had was the lighting. Almost the entire film took place at night and it was hard to watch. I guess that is to be expected in an urban environment.

My man, Danny Trejo, gets his 15 seconds of fame in the movie.

The return to form we've been waiting for

I don't usually post reviews but for this film i felt I had to, for all the Seagal fans that have suffered through his lazily shot dtv movies which have ranged from boring, downright awful to almost unwatchable-Urban Justice comes as more than just a breath of fresh air. This film is a throwback to the days when a Seagal film would spit out wanton violence for the pure sake of it; needless blood and gore simply because it could and Seagal beating people up with no mercy at all. Yes this is the film every Seagal has been waiting for, if you disliked the relatively toned down theatrics of Exit Wounds and Half past Dead and were disappointed by the glimpses of past glory in Into the Sun and Belly of the beast, then Urban justice is that remedy.

Not only do you get numerous brutal martial arts set pieces, broken bones, snapped necks and blood spraying around everywhere like a Takeshi Miike picture, but Seagal takes pi**ed off stoic 'im going to kill everyone' attitude to a new level, in this movie he is a one man army mowing down anyone who is going to mess with him. He makes his characters in Marked for Death and Out for Justice seem like choir boys.

Don Fauntleroy has done an amazing job of resurrecting a Seagal who seemed himself not to care where his career was going and after the shambolic last few movies he has come out with, Seagal has finally upped his game hundredfold. I would say its apparent from the titles sequence the dramatic jump in quality this movie has compared to his recent snooze fests. Sit back and enjoy, Steven Seagal is back!

Pretty Good Flick

I think if you like bloody movie's this is one you'll love, lots of violence and some well rounded acting for those who know what to expect from a Steven Seagal film, so be prepared for some violence & some kicking (not as high as he used to kick), all & all i liked the movie, wasn't sure if i would but it held my attention and also had some surprises as you'll see, i don't wanna spoil this flick BY telling you too much, so get your popcorn & be ready to see an older fatter Steven Seagal movie that is about a man who seeks revenge for the murder of his son. It's worth seeing if your a fan of this type of movie, Karate, Gun, Fighting, Killing,Gangs, Cops (LAPD) and a 1 man army and a surprise or 2 alone the way for you, sort of suspenseful movie that should keep you watching as it did me. I'll say if you like Steven Seagal then you ought to really like this movie, maybe not his best but very good, and pretty well written & edited and nice camera work. A very well made movie as i said and I hope you'll enjoy it from what I've told you without any spoilers, I seldom write Spoiler. But you do know what kinds of movie Seagal does so this is totally a Steven Seagal that will also keep you interested in the plot with a nicely written script and I had to give It and "R" for it Violence & Language but also a "7" for the edited movie, plot, story & acting, editing, script & camera work & supporting actors (supporting rolls) like Eddie Griffin who helped hold this movie together.

Special forces in the hood

An American action film; A story about a former special-ops agent whose son is gunned down in a drive-by shooting where there were no witnesses, and so to find his son's killer, he probes, unleasing some of his own justice on treacherous streets and towards other unseen forces. It's fairly predictable and light on plot but heavy on action. Seagal convinces us of his ruthlessness and amorality in his pursuit of his son's killer. As an aside, the production standards here are the highest for ten years in Seagal's film career, the last of which was "The Glimmer Man," which preceded a long succession of lower-budget direct-to-video films.

Absolutely terrible, even for Segal Standarts...

I watched this movie knowing nothing about it except that its a Segal flick and I have at times enjoyed those in a guilty pleasure type of way. Well Urban Justice does not fit into that category. It is an absolutely terrible film. The story/ending is predictable from the beginning, the casting could not be worse, the dialog is cheesy and stale, the music does not fit the scenes and the direction does not make sense from one moment to the next.

I think anybody who wants to watch a Segal flick should just rent Under Siege, even if that means you are seeing it for the 50th time. Urban Justice is a waste of time, unless you want to see how bad movie-making can get at its worst...

Vengeance in the hood...

Steven Seagal stars as a man (trained in special forces tactics, no doubt) who goes gunning for the people responsible for his son's murder. While there Seagal runs up against Eddie Griffin and looks not to fight the ones who pulled the trigger but rather the one who gave the orders, to which Seagal finds was his son's employer. Without a doubt this is Seagal's best movie in ages. In fact were talking all the way back to his Under Siege days. Urban Justice does have some good action and thankfully Seagal has done his own dubbing, has done his own martial arts and indeed has put an emphasis on actually making something at least half way decent. I highly doubt that Urban Justice would ever stack up against the very best in the genre (Let alone, Seagal's earlier movies such as Hard To Kill, Out For Justice and Under Siege ) but Urban Justice is well made, features more depth than usual for a Seagal flick (Though Seagal still needs acting lessons) and in fact is never boring. Indeed it's a movie like this that makes you realize that after numerous dud after dud, that Seagal maybe has something left. On all fronts the movie is no great shakes but for fans of the genre and Seagal, one can do much worse than this one.

Poor

I don't understand all these positive reviews. In my view this is one of Seagal's worst (though not his very worst). I didn't feel like Seagal was "back" at all. Many confusing, close edits, and poor lighting, obscure the fighting. Speaking of lighting, there wasn't much used, so the whole film is extremely dark and grainy, and not in a stylized way, just in a "we didn't care enough to use lighting" sort of way. Often characters appear backlit on the screen as well.

The story is simplistic to the point of being laughable. Seagal still can't act.

I feel 4 stars is generous, but I WAS entertained, so mission accomplished, from that point of view.

Seagal back in fine form.

Since 2001 life has not been too kind for Steven Seagal fans who watched him come back to the number 1 charts with the box office hit exit wounds nearly 7 years ago only to stumble with the less than stellar half past dead, and from there it was dtv jail without passing go. And if that was not bad enough the majority of his dtv films have been howlers aside from a few. Urban Justice had a lot riding against its success as most fans are jaded, but let me say that Urban Justice turned out to be his best and most violent film since exit wounds.

Seagal is Simon Ballister who is attending his policeman son's funeral that was premeditated by crooked cops or local gangsters and Simon is here to simply find out who killed his son and take them to hell. We don't get much exposition on his character other than he is a man with a "dark past",and for the most part it works just fine. Eddie Griffin and Danny Trejo show up for as rival gang leaders with danny's role running about 5 minutes at best. Both men come off well.Yes.Even Eddie Griffin this time.

The real surprise is the lack of stunt doubles and the fact that Seagal is doing all his own fight scenes here.Bones are broke, necks snapped, ball shot upon ball shot, maiming, and gratuitous violence for all as only Steven Seagal can deliver. There are also some nice gunfights that recall Under Siege and a really good car chase.Director Don E. FauntLeRoy does a really good job of directing this time out.

As for Seagal? he is just fine here aside from a Brooklyn accent that pops into an urban drawl and back again. It kind of gets on this viewers nerves.Other than that he is totally hellbent and has that scrappy charm that we remember from the good old days is back.

Among the best direct-to-video movies with Steven Seagal... but this isn't saying much!

Steven Seagal's career after HALF PAST DEAD and THE FOREIGNER has been on a string of direct-to-video movies (and he still makes some of them in these days) that were mostly seen by his die-hard fans. Some were quite dreadful (such as PISTOL WHIPPED... a movie so dull that it looked like it lasted 4 hours!) and some were mildly ok at best (such as this one). While it wasn't excellent like Seagal's previous efforts UNDER SIEGE and ON DEADLY GROUND, it was more of a time-passer.

The plot is very simple: in the beginning a young cop is shot during a shooting in a tough neighbourhood. His father Simon Ballister (Seagal) is a former cop who wants revenge on the people that shot and killed his son. And he will stop at nothing to get his hands on Armand Tucker (Eddie Griffin).

One of the things I appreciated of this movie is that Steven Seagal's acting looked a bit more convincing than in most of the movies of this period and he actually looked pretty cool as he wasn't very fat yet. The supporting actors' performances were all good tho nothing exceptional. And the cinematography too was very good this time.

If you are a die-hard fan of Seagal then watch it, but for those who enjoy his movies from time to time like me, it could be a nice viewing experience if you are in the right mood.

Standard Segal with a bigger budget...

Urban Justice is your basic revenge story. Seagal plays an older, fatter version of himself on a mission to avenge the murder of his son in beautiful Compton, California. Seagal is undeniably past his prime now, although it's still fun to watch him cruising solo through the streets of east LA smacking gangsters around. It's pretty sad when they give him too much slang, though. He's a middle aged father, he shouldn't be speaking like a 19 year old gang member! Essentially, he is basically Rambo, patrolling gang-infested streets alone and, as they say, bringing fists to gunfights, but he's Seagal, he can get away with that. There's nothing new here and sadly the only reason to watch it might be to see what Seagal looks like these days. He can still fight, but Urban Justice is no Out for Justice.

Are you kidding me?

6.1 out of 10 as average? I think this is a joke! Higher rating than Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, Out for Justice and Under Siege? You must be kidding me! This film was just so-so at Seagal's best. It was nice to see him returning to his old-school style in this one but overall the entertainment by itself was not that good. Of course, it is a lot better...I mean MUCH better than any of his DTV films but not Into The Sun. I liked Into the Sun over Urban Justice because of better production values and Seagal seems more on rampage in that film than in this one. I know Into the Sun didn't have that much action and fighting scenes like this one but I still liked it better mostly due to better camera work/techniques.

The directing was just average but not worth enough to prove anything good for a theatrical release.

With the profanity in this one...I HATED IT and I didn't think any of those were that funny. They tried to blow some funny one-liners but it doesn't work in this one. F bombs in almost every line which got on my nerves because it doesn't add any gritty feel to the film.

As what I exactly expected that I was having low expectations for this one, for any Seagal DTV films at the most.

While not great, Urban Justice is one of the better Steven Seagal recent releases

That says a lot actually, because I have disliked a lot of them. Urban Justice may have some clichéd characters, a derivative plot, a really lagging pace particularly in the middle, mediocre acting and some jarring dialogue. However, while hardly high art the photography and editing are a step above other Seagal films, same with the soundtrack and sound effects. The action is short but decently choreographed and has a tinge of excitement, the direction is not incompetent as it can be and while Steven Seagal himself is not great he is not as lazy and unintelligible as he can be. All in all, one of his better recent releases, but could've been better. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Better Than His Recent Efforts, But Still Not Good

I just watched Urban Justice (2007)

I was expecting this to be better than what it was, as a few friends like it, and I was led into the thinking, that it was the start of a few good ones.

The explosive squibs are amazingly bloody!! For his part Seagal does at least look like he is trying, and as far as I could tell, there were no body or voice doubles. The movie could have used much more Danny Trejo, as his screen time is pretty limited.

Eddie Griffin is one annoying man!! Urrrgghhhh he seriously irked me!! He has only one scene with Seagal, at the end, Griffin comes at him from behind, holding a gun. Seagal disarms him (obviously!! He is Steven Seagal) tells him "I have no beef with you", then hands him the gun back and walks off. Griffin replies "That's gangstah." what the hell??

Final verdict, maybe if I watched this closer to the last batch, I would have appreciated it more!! As it was better than them, , but as the first one to restart them with, I did not enjoy it.
