It’s finally time for another “Superman” movie.

Despite being one of the most iconic superheroes of all time, the superhero movie boom largely left Superman behind. After a series of movies starring Christopher Reeve in the 1970s and 80s, it took nearly 20 years for the character to have another big-screen project. Across the 10-year lifespan of the Dceu, the Man of Steel only got one solo outing.

Now that Superman is finally back in theaters, it’s time to revisit his old adventures.

On July 11, Clark Kent/Kal-El returned to theaters in “Superman” from Dcu architect James Gunn. David Corenswet stars as the Last Son of Krypton alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. The film kicks off a brand new DC cinematic universe, marking the first theatrical Superman solo film since the last DC universe started in 2013.

Batman Forever screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has not given up on the hope of seeing the much-talked-about "Schumacher Cut" released. Joel Schumacher was brought in to revamp the Batman movie franchise after Tim Burton's dark sequel, Batman Returns, scared off parents and younger audiences. Batman Forever was a box office smash hit, but some fans took issue with the change in tone from Burton's movies. For nearly five years, talk about a fabled, darker director's cut, known as "The Schumacher Cut," has circulated, and the film's writer isn't giving up on it seeing the light of day.

For over 40 years, Roger Ebert was a fixture in film journalism. Ebert's film knowledge and approachable style proved invaluable for readers and viewers over the years. Ebert reviewed thousands of films for the Chicago Sun-Times, many of which can be found on RogerEbert.com, from 1967 until his death in 2013. In between, Ebert co-hosted At the Movies with Gene Siskel and, later, Richard Roper, from 1986 to 2008.

Suffice it to say, if you watched a film released during that stretch, chances are Ebert reviewed it out of four stars. That includes comic book movies, a genre that before the turn of the century struggled to appease both fans and viewers, often underwhelming both. There was no shortage of comic book movies Ebert hated, but that doesn't mean there weren't comic book movies Ebert loved.

It's difficult to overstate the impact of Richard Donner's 1978 blockbuster "Superman." Much has been written about how, without Donner's film and Christopher Reeve's Superman, we wouldn't have the modern blockbuster — all of which is true. But beyond the film's effect on Hollywood and the rise of blockbuster filmmaking, "Superman" was a truly special movie for so many other reasons.

Its innovative special effects actually fulfilled the movie's promise to make audiences "believe a man can fly," while Donner's respectful treatment of the source material seemed to transcend the comic book foundations of the film itself, resulting in a work that embodied the very values that Supes himself stood for: hope, justice, truth. "Superman" also proved every naysayer wrong, demonstrating that comic book material could make for successful Hollywood fare.

In the years since that original movie and its three sequels, we've had numerous cinematic iterations of the Man of Steel.

Movies from the DC Universe as of late may not have been some of its best ones to date, resulting in either critically panned, or brutally underrated projects that performed terribly badly at the box office. But this wasn’t always the case, as this superhero universe is also credited with giving fans some of the best and most comically accurate films of all time.

Now that James Gunn is soon about to launch his revamped version of the respective super-verse with a full-blown rebooted cast, it seems like the perfect time to go down memory lane and reminisce all those masterpieces that DC gave us over the years – since we probably won’t be seeing all those iterations of the superheroes that we grew up watching return anytime soon.

That said, here’s a list of the 10 highest-rated movies from this super-verse, ranked according to their respective ratings on IMDb.

"Superman II" is pretty entertaining, but no matter which version you watch, it feels like you're watching an incomplete movie. This can't be blamed on director Richard Donner, whose tribulations with making the movie are almost as infamous as the Christopher Reeve Superman era itself. It's just that a painful domino effect spearheaded by corporate bigwigs essentially doomed the project, even if the final products aren't necessarily bad. It's just that it could have been so much more.

For his part, Donner recognized this. While he sadly passed away in 2021, he had been quite open about the "Superman II" that could have been if his 2006 "Donner Cut" actually embodied his full vision. There were scenes that he couldn't include in that so-called definitive edition because Warner Bros. had destroyed them, but thankfully, he didn't forget about them. It took a lot to bring "Superman" and "Superman II" to the big screen. Director Richard Donner and producer Alexander Salkind didn't get off to the best start, with Donner having to salvage a truly disastrous script that Salkind evidently felt was "perfect." But once "Superman" debuted in 1978, things started looking up. Or so it seemed.

With "Superman," Donner helped invent the modern blockbuster, setting a blueprint for every superhero movie that would follow and breaking box office records in the process. What made "Superman" an even more impressive feat was that during production, Donner had simultaneously shot most of the sequel. "Superman" and "Superman II" were filmed simultaneously, which meant the crew worked from a hefty script that required Donner to film scenes for both movies alongside one another.

Unfortunately, in order to make the "Superman" release date, Donner and co. had to stop filming "Superman II" before it was finished.

Look, up in the sky! It's not a bird or a plane, but it's definitely one heck of a treat for fans of the big blue boy scout superhero. Superman may have experienced a bit of a rocky road in recent DC history on the big screen, despite an actor as capable and charismatic as Henry Cavill leading the action and even with James Gunn's promise that the immensely popular hero will be a "huge priority" moving forward. Hate to sound like Captain Obvious here, but there’s a disproportionate number of sequels out there. Of the ten highest grossing films of 2014, seven are straight up continuations of stories, while the other three are either reboots of existing properties or Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be another article moaning about how bad this is (not directly any way). Considering among those sequel box office hits are How To Train Your Dragon 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days Of Future Past it’s clear they can be pretty damn good, with the guys behind them putting actual effort into making a solid movie. A little over two years ago, I was at a screening of Zack Snyder’s film Sucker Punch, which also featured a Q&A with the director himself beforehand. Despite the protestations of the PR people and the fact that nobody was able to ask questions about a film they hadn’t yet seen, Snyder had only days earlier been announced as the director of a rebooted Superman film. As such it meant that the Man Of Steel was heavily on the agenda.

Any fan of the Superman movie series knows of the myriad problems experienced during the filming of Superman II. The most notable was the estranged relationship that director Richard Donner had with producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind. Donner’s plan was to film the first two movies simultaneously, but he was eventually dropped from the production and replaced with Richard Lester. In 2006, Warner Bros. worked with Donner to restore his own vision to Superman II, releasing his cut of the film. The result is an incomplete movie patched together from alternate takes and even some screen tests. However, as flawed as this cut of the film is, it is nice to see the original director get some closure in one of the original superhero movie franchises. It has been five years since Bryan Singer's last directorial effort, "Valkyrie." That film -- a modest success at the domestic box office (and an even larger one overseas) -- was a reclamation project, of sorts, for both its couch-jumping star, Tom Cruise, and Singer, who was looking to rebound after the disappointing box office tally of 2006's "Superman Returns." A little over a year from now, the most iconic comic character in history will be back on screens, courtesy of Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel." Seven years on from Bryan Singer's oft-derided "Superman Returns," it'll see "The Dark Knight" mastermind Christopher Nolan producing a new, seemingly darker take on the character, to be played by Henry Cavill with Michael Shannon as his Kryptonian nemesis, General Zod.

But Shannon will have big shoes to fill: the last time the character was on the big screen it was played by Terence Stamp in 1981's "Superman II," still seen by many fans as not only the best take on that character, but the best screen version of Superman to date. Which was impressive, considering it had about as troubled a production history as you could ask for, with two directors, production stretched over two years, and a recent, wildly different reissue of the film.

 

In 1987, director Richard Donner and screenwriter Shane Black came up with a new kind of action movie where the laughs were just as fast-paced as the thrills with Lethal Weapon, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. The film made $120 million and led to three sequels in 1989, 1992 and 1998. With $900 million, the franchise was a huge success.

 

Unfortunately, after Lethal Weapon 4, everyone involved with the series went their separate ways. Although Gibson acted in blockbuster films like The Patriot, Chicken Run and What Women Want and directed the blockbuster Biblical drama The Passion of the Christ, he subsequently lost all public goodwill with his drunken Anti-Semetic remarks during an arrest in 2006; Gibson continued acting in 2010 with Edge of Darkness and followed a year later with The Beaver. Who’S It For? Young super hero fans will eat this one up. It’s also funny enough to appeal to a wide audience.

Expectations: I thought the level of difficulty was pretty high with this one. The Avengers are based on fictional science and money (Hulk and Iron Man). Thor is a god with a big hammer from a land of rainbow walkways. Plus, Hemswroth is not a household name … yet.
