In my endless search for anime not addressed to teenagers and youngsters in general, Masaaki Yuasa has never failed to provide a constant source for titles that are addressed to a mature audience, through their context but also their presentation of sex and violence. In that regard, his taking up of one of the most cult anime titles, “Devilman” based on Go Nagai’s manga, seemed like a perfect fit. Let us see if it actually was.

Akira Fudo, a high school student, is informed by his best friend, Ryo Asuka, that an ancient race of demons has returned to take back the world from humans. Believing that the only way to defeat the demons is to incorporate their powers, Ryo suggests to Akira that he unites with a demon. Succeeding in doing so, Akira transforms into Devilman, possessing the powers of a demon but retaining the soul of a human.

Before Alita: Battle Angel, the idea that any live-action anime film would be worth watching was a little ludicrous. For whatever reason, there were very few good live-action anime films. The number of ones worth watching could be counted maybe on one hand and many of them were made in Japan. Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note, Bleach, and Parasyte had some effective adaptations, while more obscure manga like Oldboy and Ichi the Killer were adapted into such amazing films that people often forget they were manga first.

But American adaptations? Ghost in the Shell is controversial, sure, but it and Alita are leagues above the likes of Dragonball Evolution, Fist of the North Star, and our attempt at a Death Note film. And even Japan has misfires, as seen with Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Devilman. Still, there...

To mark the 50th year of Go Nagai’s career, his hit series Devilman returns as Devilman Crybaby – from a team of Japan’s top creators offering their take on the anime adaptation of a legendary manga; which is comins to Netflix in 2018.

Lauded as an “eternal masterpiece” that could never be completely recreated in moving images, the entirety of Devilman will finally be portrayed in Devilman Crybaby. The new Netflix series comes from Masaaki Yuasa, the world-renowned creator known for his work on many high-quality titles such as “Ping Pong the Animation” and “Mind Game.” The series will also feature a screenplay by Ichiro Okouchi and music by Kensuke Ushio.
