A fruit worth eating

This cartoon is a strange case for me. Not only is it one of the few times I preferred the cartoon over the original comic, this is also one of the few times I preferred the English dub over the original Japanese dialogue. That being said, it is an entertaining show starring the kind Toru as she lives with and helps members of the Soma family with various problems which often are based on them being cursed by turning into animals based on the Chinese zodiac by being hugged by someone of the opposite gender.

The comedy, tragedy, and slice-of-life elements blend smoothly together and the characters are wonderful. Though the cartoon is short and lacked many characters from the comic, it was much more enjoyable and even characters who were unlikable in the comic are much better in this series, esp. Akito who is, in my opinion, much more sympathetic here than in the comic.

The English voices are much better than the original Japanese versions. In the J-language ver, Toru sounded much too soft and Kyo sounds like an overexcited game show host. This is fixed in the dub with voices who can match the emotion without sounding too soft nor too silly.

Overall, I recommend this series and encourage others to watch it.

Best Anime Series of all Time!

After watching the first episode of Fruits Basket, I knew I had to see more. After buying the DVD's, every episode got better and better. It is such an enjoyable series.

It is funny, touching and more. Every character who comes into it (excluding the Yuki fan club girls) are likable and there is something good about them all.

Although it is an animated series, the characters seem so real and it feels as if it really happening to someone you care about.

The ending was great, even though there were a lot of problems still unsolved. This just leaves it open for another series (let's cross our fingers) or if not another anime series, it will continue with the manga.

The thing about Fruits Basket is that it deals with real life problems (except in different ways) like not being excepted for who you are or what you look like.

This series is recommended to any anime fan or even non-anime fans will enjoy it whether you're laughing out loud or feeling for the characters as they go through their pain and problems.

A Great and Wonderful Anime

Wow, I am blown back with this. This Anime has really just made me feel, well I can't describe it, but I tell you what, it has all the qualities of what I look for in a good Anime or a good Movie. And really I'm impressed. After reading the first volume of the Manga series, and keeping that all in mind, I wasn't sure how I would react to this adaptation. But of course I found it spectacular. I tell you I don't think I've seen quite another story like this one. I mean it sounds like the dumbest thing on earth, but when you really start getting into it, it's just wonderful. Glad I didn't judge this book by it's cover.

Story/Adaptation:

Very nicely done. While some of the literal translations seemed a little much, and there we're certain sort of mix ups and cut outs it's really quite good. Because mind you, writing a Manga and a Screenplay are no easy tasks. Especially trying to adapt into an X amount of time for a series. So it was really nicely done. They really bring the characters out, (as is common in Shoujo) and no one really get's needlessly lost in translation. With nicely constructed duologue (Although it is easy when you have a cheat sheet) and nicely paced. Maybe it can be slow, but it doesn't bother me to much. After all this is a Shoujo/Comedy/Drama Anime so it's only natural for it to be on the slow side. And the story in General, of course I'll be treading into the Manga a bit, but it's really nice. I've only read Volume 1 but I've exceeded that with watching disc one of the DVD. I love the drama it creates, Tohru is all alone in the world it seems, but she has so many people that care for her. Two friends that are so fiercely loyal to her, it's amazing. Thoru is such a happy-go-lucky girl, but she's also very selfless. I like when characters aren't warped in vanity, that just drives me nuts when they are so vain. Even the infatuated Prince Yuki Fan Club President, has a soft side to her. Some of the other aspects I loved, strong sense of freindship. Hanna and Uoh, thoes two, just have hearst of gold. They love Tohru like a sister, and you can just tell they want to take care of her and protect her. They seem like the type who would take a baseball bat to a persons head if that person harmed Thoru.

Acting:

VERY NICE! A very superbness dub, and you people say all dubs suck. I got to tell you it's filled me with a bit of confidence for when FUNI dubs Tusbasa. Laura Bailey does absolutely wonderful with Tohru. Although her Japanese counter part is much higher, she really brings the character out well. I don't find any voices to be on the really annoying side. At least the guys sound like guys, and gals sound like Gals. (Even if Yuki is a bit of a she-male)

Original Score: Rather weak. Nice usage, but could be better in my opinion. But not so bad. Some nice movements, but the themes aren't so wonderful. But still at least there are memorable melodies in this series, as opposed to no music at all. That Piano Theme at the end of Episode 25 was, wow amazing.

Animation:

Superbious quality. What more can I say?

Overall: This has really been on my mind quite a bit lately. And it's become one of my Favorites. It's a nice shoujo even for soft guys like me. I strongly recommend it to just about anyone who is looking for a great comedy-drama b/c I enjoyed it. This Anime has just moved me to tears at times, I was bawling in the end it so sweet. It has given me just warm feelings all around So check this out, you might just like it.

Unique, lovable, dark, funny

Fruits Basket is truly one of the kind. The protagonist, Tohru is a highly lovable heroine and although from time to time her cheerful personality can get a bit annoying, we really see her (and the other characters) grow and evolve throughout the series. At first, it's looking just like an average high-school drama/comedy with a bit of fantasy to spice everything up, but it soon becomes clear that this anime is more, much more. It's light and cheerful, but also dark and terrifying. It can get either heartwarming or heartbreaking. It's a perfet mixture with a well-developed story that will make you care about each and every one of the charachters. The ending is perfect and really wraps everything up, it doesn't leave ou with the feeling that the series is unfinished, like with so many other animes. I highly, highly recommend watching.

Drama

At first glance, Fruits Basket appears to be no different from other Shoujo manga; it features a typical, attractive, and charitable girl who attracts all the attractive boys. Okay, so it really is that, but there's something unique about the way the series evolves and how you get to see each character change and interact with one another as the plot unfolds.

Beautiful character designs that would describe every character in the series as a bishonen and bishojo are used. The Sohma Family's eyes and hair reflect the color of the animal that cursed them, giving each member of the family a distinctive look.

Even though the 26-episode long series only has one opening and one closing (Chiisana Inori), both performed by Ritsuko Okazaki, the music is incredibly lovely and achieves its goal, leaving you with a sense of serenity and tranquility.

There isn't a dull episode in the entire run of this show. Each one grows and concentrates on the circumstance of a particular individual. Even though the series was abruptly cut short and many loose ends were left, watching alone will satisfy you.

Cute but average, nothing too special

Fruits Basket is a cute first starting anime, it has light-hearted comedy and a majority of lovable characters.

Personally, the main character; Tohru annoyed me to my core. She's pretty much the poster child of Mary Sue. Yuki; another love interest of her is pretty annoying too.

However, Kyo is probably one of the best characters in the story. Very lovable and the ship between Tohru and him is awesome, even if you hate Tohru (like myself).

But this anime is not THE BEST EVER, it's a cute piece and something to watch in a weekend. While watching it, I wanted more. I wanted something to just be amazing, but sadly, nothing amazing really happened,

Not saying I don't recommend it, because I do, but it's not a classic like Ouran.

It's a good watch but again, nothing special. The dub is alright, the animation is decent, soundtrack is decent, and the story is...well...eh, but not terrible.

If you like Ouran High School Host Club, Toradora, Boys over Flowers, it will be enjoyable.

A stand out 'piece of life' anime

This is one of the best storytelling I've seen in any popular entertainment be it movies or television series. What originally look like a Ranma 1/2 clone turns out to be something of a character study where every single character shows painfully real emotions and feelings.

The show started out with the main character, Tohru Honda, stumbled onto the Sohma's family house after she had set up her tent in the surrounding forest area that is owned by the Sohma. Tohru later on is offered by Shigure, the owner of the house to stay with him as well as two other Sohma members, Yuki and Kyo in exchange of doing household chores.

After only one day, however, Tohru finds out that the Sohma is not your usual family. They hide a secret that no person outside the family has ever found out until Tohru accidentally uncovers it.

FRUIT'S BASKET: Family of the Chinese Zodiac

FRUIT'S BASKET (2001) is a classic anime, by now. Many years ago, this series played a part in introducing me to the complex world of manga and anime, of the slice-of-life variety. It was silly, humorous and yet sweet and tender, romantic without being a full blown romance story. Just a tad bit of romance that slowly and unexpectedly blooms. It really is more about friendship and the concept of finding a "found family".

"After Tohru looses her mother and is taken in by the Sohma family, she learns that twelve family members transform involuntarily into animals of the Chinese zodiac and she learns to help them deal with the emotional pain caused by the transformations."

This anime is a super heart felt series and deals with some heavy issues such as grief, loneliness, anxiety, sadness, death etc. Among many other things. It has many sweet and humorous moments too and the characters all grow on you and the story gradually unfolds in such a memorable and poignant way. Overall, it is an unforgettable story. Sadly, this version of the anime wasn't fully completed but thankfully another (reboot?) series came later on. This is still worth watching. So sweet!

[NOTE: Fav Char. Shigure Sohma, Ayame Sohma, Kyo Sohma]

Totally sweet - totally pervy

At first, this seems like a Japanese cartoon version of Pollyanna. But after a few episodes, it becomes wildly gender-bending. Boys are in love with boys, but that doesn't stop them from running erotic cosplay shops filled with stewardess uniforms. Or from hitting on high school girls. The 'responsible' member of the family writes hentai novels. Several of the characters are at least part-time transvestites. Others are actually the opposite of the gender that they present to the world. Even the regular humans are pretty edgy. One is an ex-member of a violent girl gang, the other a creepy psychic goth chick. The important thing is that they all have great hair. The drawing style is nice. Important moments are highlighted with frames in quite different drawing styles - calligraphy, basic black and white, or juvenile (well more juvenile) versions of the characters. It keeps it visually interesting. The animal versions of the characters, in very simple style, are poignantly expressive. And if you like ginger boys, Kyo is hot!

It makes you feel the characters are more than special.

I really enjoyed this anime series. I waited for it months after starting the manga (on volume 6 right now) because of lack of enough money, and I ended up getting the box set for Christmas 5 months after I originally became a fan of the manga.

This series, does not have bad dubbing, and the story is wonderful. Some things happen that I wish also happened in the manga. It is a gigglefest and a tear jerker. It just an awesome series that you just HAVE to love.

The characters are very enjoyable. There are cheerful, funny, dark, creepy, and smart butt ones. They are one hell of a group. I enjoy their English voices very much. My favorites are Kyo, Ritsu, Yuki, and Akito. Haru is pretty cool too.

This has to be part of any anime lover's collection.

warm, heartfelt and delightful in every way

Fruits basket is one of the most amazing anime and manga's i have ever read. Although i do have to admit, this genre of anime is directed at female audiences young and old( my mother loved this too.) I found that the story is unbelievably mushy but you can totally get absorbed into the 'mushyness' of the story. I completely fell in love with the story line because it was very beautiful and in a way had a lot of dimensions to it. The story had a funny comedy side and a romantic side and also a dark serious side that does make you see a lot of morals in the story. The morals are beautifully shown.

The characters of the anime were very different from some anime i have watched in the past. The characters are very 3 dimensional. they show a lot of emotions each and in a way you ache for their pains as thought they were real people. this is the anime where i cried a lot in, each characters background give them a really good base to work from and to enter the hearts of watchers. my favourite episode has to be the last three because every time i watch these episodes, i still cry non stop. and also i enjoyed momiji's story because this anime does make you think about life in a sense.

i loved this series and, if you enjoy emotional stories, this is sure to be a winner with you
