Although the screenplay includes all the clichés of melodrama, pathos and sentimentality are kept to the minimum ; the main character is absent in the first scenes ,introduced by a ship a young man is building : in English grammar, boats are refered to "she" because man loves them and ,like ships, women are impredictable :of course it's a Greek movie ,but dubbed in English,it won't be lost on the viewer.

The melodramatic scenes are summed up in very succint style;best example :arriving in the shady nightclub ,the father only says "we're leaving" and that's it .

This is a slow-moving movie ,not very storylike in spite of its subject : although the heroine has this pessimistic line " we don't know what the future has in store ", she does long for a family life and she takes good care of her sick little girl. All is fine till.....

All in all , this Greek movie is closer to Italian neo-realism than to pure melodrama; the action takes place on a distant island when time stood still but where gossips run rampant;there are beautiful views of these white houses and of the sea ; too bad it was filmed in black and white ,but it was made in 1947.
