In Paris railway station, a porter (Lucien baroux) is fired ;he meets a traveler (Jean Tissier)back from Mexico where he spent a long time and who is not in a hurry to meet again his cantakerous sister (Marguerite Pierry)in their dusty castle :he would like to enjoy the gai Paris life.So why not change their identities :the porteur will become the owner of the manor ,and his new friend will be able to live it up in the capital.No sooner said than done .It's Daphné Du Maurier's ''the scapegoat" turned comedy.There the comparison ends.
The porter, of course,will settle all the problems in the desirable mansion: the sister ,who is a real tartar,wants to marry her niece to a dull highbrow called Gaetan who has good prospects whereas the girl's in love with a nice sportsman (Jimmy Gaillard).
Director Jean Boyer was the best entertainer of the darkest hours of the Occupation (1941)and do people need that in those trouble time!There are really funny scenes in his unpretentious little comedy :the best takes place in a nightclub where the porter makes earnest Gaetan out to be a debauched individual.
I'd tone it down a bit for one thing : Lucien Baroux does not resemble Jean Tissier ,and in spite of the long absence ,it's impossible that the chatelaine should recognize her brother.
