Bobby's War (Bobbys krig) is a Norwegian war drama produced in 1973 by writer and director Arnljot Berg, which premiered in Norwegian cinemas February 21st 1974.
The film tells the story about the failed drunk of a jazz musician Robert and his son Bobby who are having a difficult time in war time Oslo, Norway during WW2. The father is trying his best to take care of his son Bobby, but he is struggling with his demons, addiction to alcohol, women, and petty scams.
Bobby also befriends a German soldier, who is also important to him, and teaching him fencing. But Bobby's struggles with the connection to his father is mixed up between idolizing him and observing his many embarrassing mistakes.
I finally got to see this film, which has been a well hidden lost secret due to scarce availability until now.
The film depicts a great relation between father and son, and a loving father which is really a loser always out of money. Well when he has, he know s how to spend them, but always trying to make the best for his son. Still he can't hide he's a failure.
The film has a long list of great Norwegian actors in minor roles, but Roy Bjørnstad as the father is a brilliantly played role. Young Erik Andersson is equally good, well directed by Berg.
The film is filmed in vibrant Eastmancolor Widescreen which really comes to it's right in the newly released on region free Blu-Ray from the crowd funding project Norske filmklassikere (Norwegian Movie Classics), available exclusively from Platekompaniet.
