A chance for Warner Brothers to recycle a lot of old material.

Oversaturated color vitaphone.

"Musical Movieland" is a film that is essentially a lot of clips from various previous Warner Brothers musical numbers all crammed together. The story stringing all these into one consists of a tour guide showing tourists the various Warner sets...and she and the tourists also sing all their dialog. It is nothing but a short made up of clips....and the copy shown by Turner Classic Movies is in color but the color is WAY oversaturated...almost making your eyes bleed at times!

Personally, the clips aren't from very many memorable films (MGM and Twentieth Century-Fox were making better musicals at the time). See it if you want, I'd rather just see the original films since there isn't much original content.

This is a Warner Brothers musical. A tour guide leads a group of tourists around an unnamed Hollywood studio. As she guides them to each stop, a clip from a past movie is shown which is supposed to exemplifies each place. Obviously, there is lots of recycling here. I don't recognize these 30's clips except maybe one or two. The Technicolor is very gaudy and probably too old for '44. I also don't recognize the guide or anybody in the tour. In a way, it is kind of like a tour through some of the WB musicals. It does achieve what it is. It's just not that impressive and maybe is just a time filler.

Wonderful Era.

This is a wonderful reminder of the Golden Age of film making and the stars that shone with it. It shows what a wonderful studio Warner Bros was at the time this was made. I treasure this film of what film making was like in that era. It is nice to see which actors went on to have successful life in pictures and some sadly not. Today's picture making is far from the days of the big studios and glamourous stars. However this film is a tribute to the glory of all the small and large film studios of the time and a history for todays youngsters to know how much effort was made by so many people possible.

Compilation

This is a cobbled-together musical short subject, derived from several old shorts, and held together by a nominal tour group wandering around the Warner Brothers lot. It works all right in an odd way, including the three-strip Technicolor 'Indian Dance' shot with Busby Berkley interludes -- the silly costumes are meant to show off the brightness of the process since these shorts date from the period when Technicolor was still more of a curiosity than part of the vocabulary of the movies.

The most interesting part, for this old fan of the 'spot the star' game is to be able to finally put a face to Bess, Flowers, 'The Queen of the Extras'. She's a member of the group being shown around the lot and you can spot Bess by the grey pillbox hat she wears.

Narrator: Movieland! A magic world of: let's pretend. Where made to order emotions are blended into a tempting fare within the walls of its giant studios and served to you on a silver screen. Where cardboard castles, paper moons, and canvas skies provide a background for the drama, comedy, gaiety, and music of distant lands. For here one may travel the world over in a short tour of its massive sets and great stages.
