Brava! Well done!

The delightful "Bear in the Big Blue House" is just one of those genuine children's shows, along with "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "Fraggle Rock," and literally anything original Sprout pulled out. The show makes usage of educational themes and wholesome family values through music, dancing, and a dash of humor.

Bear is a wonderful host who truly makes the audience feel at home - a far cry from the louder, more babyish shows of the past (like "Barney & Friends"). His friends - Tutter, Pip and Pop, Treelo, and Ojo, are wholesome, precocious, and relatable, just like real kids. At the end of each show, Bear talks to the moon, Luna, and tells her about what he and his friends did today. This is pretty soothing if you ask me, especially the song they sing.

In short, "Bear in the Big Blue House" is a show that whiny brats DESERVE to watch, given its calming nature and Bear's gentleness as a caregiver. Each episode has something that children can get a hold of, especially the relatable plotlines and the occasional pop-culture reference. I love this show, and I hope you do too.

As good as anything for your kid. Very cuddly.

Did this show continue till 2006? Wow. I mean, I'm not that surprised, it's just strange that it was around for that long after I moved on from it.

This was just part of the viewing roster when I was little. Bear was a very charasmatic protagonist. Paternal to the other characters but not...parental if that makes any sense. These other characters giving Bear troubles but never ones so big he could never handle them make for colorful episodes.

I remember swell songs and pleasant lessons that never turn into some lecture about morality.

Excellently puppeteered and acted, the ending song with Luna has me overflowing with nostalgia and love.

Reliving Childhood Memories: A Heartfelt Review of Bear in the Big Blue House

As a child, Bear in the Big Blue House felt like a warm hug wrapped in music and moonlight. I absolutely loved this show growing up-it was gentle, whimsical, and full of heart. Bear wasn't just a character; he was a comforting presence, like a favorite stuffed animal come to life. His deep voice, kind eyes, and signature sniff ("Hmm...what's that smell?") made every episode feel personal and safe.

The show's strength was in its atmosphere. The Big Blue House was a cozy, colorful space filled with lovable characters-Tutter the anxious mouse, Ojo the curious cub, Treelo the wild lemur, and Pip and Pop the playful otters. Each had their own quirks and lessons to share, and together they created a world that felt both magical and familiar.

Episodes tackled everyday emotions and experiences-sharing, saying goodbye, feeling frustrated-with a sincerity that never talked down to kids. And then there was Luna, the moon, who closed each episode with Bear in a quiet, reflective moment that still makes me emotional. That goodbye song? Pure nostalgia.

From a grown-up lens, I'd give Bear in the Big Blue House a solid 7/10. It wasn't flashy or fast-paced, but that was its charm. It prioritized emotional intelligence, kindness, and connection. The puppetry and music were lovely, even if the pacing now feels slow compared to today's children's media. But for its time-and for the way it made me feel-I'll always treasure it.

A Jewel in a Sea of Mediocrity

I can't say enough good things about this show. It is the only children's program that consistently addresses the everyday aspects of life, such as potty training, cleaning the house, bathing, brushing one's teeth, going to school, etc. The amazing thing is how it's all done in the most entertaining way with fun songs and lots of dancing -- not an easy thing to do well. My kids absolutely love it when Bear feels the Cha Cha Cha coming on! The entire cast is extremely talented. I never hear them talking down to children as I do on many other shows. The segment with Luna is wonderful to open children's minds to contemplation -- it is so soothing.

My children, now 3 and 1, have adored this show since they were old enough to hold their heads up and it's one of the few programs that I actually enjoy myself as there is a subtle humor that adults can appreciate. Most importantly, however, this is a show that actually teaches kids about real life while entertaining them and opening their imaginations. My personal favorite of all the current kids shows, and objectively speaking, one of the three best kids shows on TV. Also, the pacing is great and it does not contribute to the short attention span syndrome like so many other kids shows.

A rarity, absolutely perfect for kids!

I was 5 when this started airing on weekday mornings, and I cannot count the number of times I was enthralled when watching this programme. At 17, I still love it. Bear in the Big Blue House is a rarity, and is absolutely perfect for kids to wake up to. The puppetry is first rate so colourful and convincing, the characters are endearing(I have always loved Tutter and Pip and Pop), the songs are tuneful and fun and the stories are nice. Also, this programme successfully teaches simple lessons that adults will definitely appreciate, and Bear even talks into the camera so I always get the feeling that I am being invited into this wonderful big blue house, and that is exactly what I want to feel. I have mentioned the songs, but I have to say the title theme is something that kids will definitely have in their heads, as it is in my head constantly. Same with the theme tunes to Darkwing Duck and Pingu. Bear's duet with the moon is lovely, and speaking of Bear he is an amazing character, so warm and loving you can easily relate to him. In conclusion, a rare weekday morning gem. 10/10 Bethany Cox

I admit it!!! I loved this show!!!

I have a confession to make : I'm 16 and I loved this show, been watching it since i was 10 (much too old for this kind of show)Of course it's a kiddy show so there's no exciting plot lines and i already know most of what it's teaching. But It's so entertaining, the songs, the characters. I loved bear, he's so huggable and adorable. Tudder's hilarious so are pip and pop. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the scenes and going 'awwww' at others. The way they teach, it makes it easy for the younger kids to catch it, with songs, examples, stories etc. And they teach the more important things: like sharing, forgiving, being a good friend, good sportsmanship, discovering the world around you etc. this is one show!! It's not boring for the older audience too, it's funny and witty. Overall, this is an excellent show for the young and the young at heart.

quit smelling me

They don't make classic gems like this anymore which is probably why children today are as messed up as a crack addict.

Bear in the Big Blue House is a great show start to finish. The goodbye song puts me to sleep and i love it.

BITBBH provides social skills, jokes, songs and qurkey characters for entertainment.

An absolute adorable show.

Not Sesame Street but warm, engaging and good for preschool kids

For readers that think I have slowly started to crumble into a world of watching television for the sake of seeing colourful images moving, I must clarify that I came to The Bear a year ago as part of helping out some friends. A young family stayed with me in my house and they included two children of about 2 and 3 years old. Each morning as I was eating breakfast, the children would be merrily watching the Bear on channel 5 and joining in with his fun. So, from their critical point of view the show certainly appears to have worked – but they cannot type so damn them and damn their opinions.

Watching it as an adult I must admit that it is a good product that has the strengths of the genre but has none of the major weaknesses that you would associate with something like Barney. Bear is actually quite a warm character and he has a bit of personality behind him rather than just churning out phrases and corny clichés. The fact that the other characters are pretty good also helps as, although they are cute of course, they are not so sickly that I ever feared becoming diabetic from just watching it. It has a nice warm feel to it and Bear approaches the audience like a kindly Uncle rather than doing patronising baby talk. It isn't quite Sesame Street but it has more of that feel than the dreaded dinosaur. The characters all look good and are well delivered (although Shadow as an idea is just plain creepy if you ask me) and the voice work matches it all well.

Overall this is an enjoyable show for pre-school kids that can be watched by adults without getting annoying in the way that some others do. Like I said, not Sesame Street but effective nonetheless.

Great for the littlest of kids

This is my 2-year-old's favorite show, hands down. It is also the one show that will hold my 6-month-old son's attention for very long. I don't know what he enjoys about the show, but he always gets a big grin on his face when he sees Bear.

This show teaches a lot more than just colors and shapes, Bear talks about sharing, taking turns, being clean and more. He is sweet without being sappy, the songs are memorable and fun without being annoying and the rest of the characters are peppy without being hyper. Most of all, I LOVE how kind everyone is to each other, how all the characters are polite, respectful and say please and thank you. Too many children's programs are leaning towards sassy, sarcastic characters who look down on and disrespect everyone else.

This is a show that my husband and I will sit down and watch with our kids. I even look forward to the "Shadow" stories because they usually make me laugh. And I admit that we spend a lot of time trying to figure out how the giant Bear puppet works! :)

Good job Bear. 5 stars from this happy mom!! * * * * *

Fantastic Show

I have an almost 3 year old son, and we've been watching Bear for just over 18 months together. It's a fantastic show which he really loves. He already knows all the words for both the Hello and Goodbye songs (which is pretty impressive for a 3 year old!).

The music in the show is excellent as well. Im a guitarist and love listening to the different songs. I even try to learn a few to play to him when we're away on holidays.

I've recommended this to so many families with young children, and all of them have commented on how much their kids like it. Even the older kids get a kick out of it.

About the only thing I find annoying in the show is the voices of some of the characters. But it's for kids, and they love it.

Great effort! 10/10.

A brilliant children's show.

I used to watch this with my 3 youngest, who are now, 22, 18 and 16. They loved it back then. Now I'm watching it with my grandson, who is loving it too. He was premature by 3 months, so by corrected age is only 2 months. When he is getting upset we put it on and he looks straight at it, it calms him down hearing bear talking. He smiles away at it. It's so nice to be able to share it with not just my children, who learned a lot from it, but now also my grandson. It isn't just a mindless cartoon, it's educational, so it's beneficial to children. The characters are all great and how things are explained, is easy for children to understand.

Perfect for parents and baby

Perfectly lovely. I watched this with a 2 year old girl I was nanny for, and found MYSELF enjoying it. My husband and I are looking forward to watching it along with our first child. I like that it is personal, and sweet. It teaches empathy, I love that. It is the only program I am looking forward for him to see. I have been disappointed by many of the programs around geared toward younger viewers.

A delightful childhood treasure!

My kids were the wrong age for this, but my 21st century grandsons were not! I have heard it is coming back, which is wonderful as I have a great grandson now.

Rather than saccharine stories that try to pound messages and fables into the young, Bear in the Big Blue House provides charm, humor and hidden lessons. Noel MacNeal is fantastic as Bear, providing warmth, and companionship, with a side course of gentle education! Can't wait to share it with my GGS!!

If you can, take time to watch the original episodes, and see the talent in them. Noel will be reprising his original character... So be on the lookout for one of the best puppeteers around today.

A Show Every Child Should See

Bear In The Big Blue House never failed to entertain me over and over as a youngster. At times I would even watch it while eating breakfast. Each episode focuses on a particular theme such as using the senses, the seasons, and even toilet training. In fact, I think that if it wasn't for the "potty" episode I would still be in diapers (I was fairly stubborn on the issue). Bear acts like a father/older brother figure to Tutter the mouse, Ojo the small bear, Treelo the lemur, and Pip and Pop the twin otters. There are also two other regular characters called Shadow (the outline of a little girl with pigtails) and Luna (the moon). Ray (the sun) also makes occasional appearances. All of these great characters have really appealing designs. Bear is a mix of brown and orange, Ojo is red, Treelo is green with blue ears and tail, Tutter is blue, and Pip and Pop are purple. As a kid and an adult I'm always enchanted by this literal rainbow of characters and I think any young child would be. If I had to pick a favourite it would be Treelo. Another thing that I absolutely adore is the songs, especially the "bear chachacha". This is a show every child should see.

Fabulous!

This show is by far one of the best Henson projects to date. My daughter and I watch the show together every day... it's just the cutest! The characters are adorable, lovable, and too funny! Our house tradition is for every guest to sit and watch the Potty Time episode with us... Tutter Mouse is such a riot, he always leaves my company in stitches. As with most children's shows, there is that whole "educational value" to it all, but the entertainment factor has exceeded all of my expectations for a show in it's class. I highly recommend this show for kids of all ages (even moms and dads!)!

I Love You, Bear!

Bear in the Big Blue House isn't as great as The Muppets or Sesame Street, but it's still enjoyable! I loved it as a kid but stopped watching at 4 because Bear's sniffing scared me. However, I rediscovered it on YouTube a few years back and heard others say good things about it that I completely forgot about. Because of this, I now enjoy watching Bear in the Blue House again, and it opened my eyes in a way I wasn't expecting. However, Bear's sniffing still scares me, but that alone is not enough for me to hate the show because it takes up a small portion of the episodes. I'm glad it's now on Disney+, and I watch it there sometimes.

On a side note, I misremembered the show's camera quality being dark and dull for many years, which scared me. However, the visuals are surprisingly bright, colorful, clear as can be, and not so dark, causing me to regain interest in it. You might think I grew up watching poor-quality VHS tapes of the series that have been watched too much, but that isn't true. I grew up owning 3 Bear tapes, and not too long ago, I watched all 3 of them for the first time since I was 4 years old. To my surprise, their quality is still excellent, showing no signs that they've been watched too much.

Noel MacNeal, the puppeteer and voice of Bear, confirmed that Bear is intended to be the anti-Barney. While Barney is often described as loud, childlike, and having a dopey-sounding voice, Bear is commonly described as calm and fatherly, with a voice that doesn't make parents want to bulge their eyes out. Noel has even referred to Bear as a "furry Mr. Rogers." Unlike Barney, Bear has more depth in his personality and does not talk down to the audience, making the show popular with both kids and adults. On the other hand, Barney is exclusively for kids and receives a lot more hate from people other than the target audience, even though I'm neutral to the purple dinosaur show.

Bear in the Big Blue House is a cozy show with a calming approach. No wild and bouncy characters (minus Treelo), loud noises, or stimulation overloads (except for Bear's sniffing) are present. Bear has a soft, soothing, and instantly recognizable voice that boosts his calming presence. The closing scenes of each episode, where Bear talks to Luna and sings The Goodbye Song with her, are particularly soothing to watch, thanks to the calming music in the background and their conversations about relaxing topics, such as the idea that home is where you feel best. The series has gained popularity among children, especially those with special needs like autism, due to its calming nature and Bear's gentle demeanor (more about that in a little bit). Coincidentally, I have had autism since birth and have been sensitive to loud noises for all my life.

Similarly to Steve and Joe from Blue's Clues, whenever Bear asks the audience a question, such as "What do you like to do with your friends?" or "Who do you love most?", real children appear on the screen to answer. This makes the interactions feel genuine. Surprisingly, Bear's pauses after asking questions are short and sweet. He also uses an advanced vocabulary, sometimes incorporating words many young children might not be familiar with, such as "suave and debonair," indicating that the show isn't exclusively for kids.

Bear in the Big Blue House effectively teaches a variety of topics in a way that is easily understood by children, without explicitly stating the morals. It provides real-life examples of how the episodes' themes can be demonstrated, songs (more about them later), stories, and more. For instance, in the episode "Share Bear," Bear provides multiple examples of items to share with others, such as toys and books, emphasizing that sharing has several meanings. He also acknowledges that sometimes sharing can be hard, as seen when Pip and Pop want to eat the same sandwich. Bear suggests they each eat half of it, giving them the perfect solution. Unlike several other preschool shows, this series teaches nothing related to academics. Instead, it teaches life lessons and social skills, like sharing, friendship, sportsmanship, hygiene, forgiveness, potty training, and lots more.

Bear's gentleness, alongside his understanding, laid-back, and nonjudgmental approach to handling his friends' issues, make him an excellent caregiver. He helps his friends overcome their challenges in a nurturing way and never complains, gets angry, or feels displeased with his role. For example, in the episode "Nothing to Fear," Tutter becomes scared of Bear's new skunk cuckoo clock, so he takes it apart to understand it better and overcome his fear. Bear is initially confused but quickly understands when Tutter explains his actions. He wisely says, "The more you know about something, the less you'll be afraid of it."

Plus, in "Welcome to Woodland Valley," he comforts Ojo after the local library is wrecked. He assures her that the entire population of Woodland Valley will unite to fix it and sings a reassuring song. I'm amazed at how Bear handles these situations, as they can be difficult for many caregivers and parents to navigate. Plus, some people sugarcoat similar situations and don't take them seriously. Unlike Barney, he is aware that positivity isn't always the best solution. He reassures his friends that they are loved, no matter what.

Some parents, including mine, tend to expect their children's negative attitudes to change from bad to good magically. Thankfully, Bear does not display this unrealistic expectation. I dislike when this happens because it's impossible; nobody maintains a positive attitude just for the sake of it. Furthermore, I've often heard that it's okay to feel upset, and I feel deceived whenever that expectation arises. Overall, if we all strived to be more like Bear, the world would be a better place to live in.

The dynamic between Bear and his friends is nurturing and uplifting. Each character plays a vital role in fostering an environment of trust and empathy, where everyone feels valued and respected. Their connections involve an open exchange of thoughts and feelings, promoting a strong sense of belonging.

The group has remarkable patience and understanding, which is crucial for those facing social challenges or sensory overload. Bear shows that it's okay to struggle and seek help, teaching valuable lessons for all. He and his friends celebrate each other's uniqueness, creating a safe space for authenticity and a family-like bond, showcasing resilience through challenges. This blend of acceptance and encouragement highlights the importance of community, especially for those with autism or sensory sensitivities.

Unlike some other preschool shows, Bear in the Big Blue House uses humor throughout, making it even more enjoyable to watch. Some of its funniest moments include Bear shaking his head while dancing during the theme song, the said character asking, "I'm curious. Were you cha-cha-chaing?", and Tutter screaming, followed by a calmer, "Thank you, Bear!". I'm not good at describing funniness, but these moments really stand out.

The show has a wide variety of music genres, including jazz, rock, hip-hop, the blues, and more. The jazz songs evoke a nostalgic tone, likely appealing to parents and grandparents who grew up with this style of music. There are a few songs where the title character scat-sings, and his energetic vocals truly bring those moments to life!

Many of the songs convey life lessons or inspiring messages, adding uniqueness that a simple conversation often lacks. One of the best examples is Pip and Pop's song "Otter Love," which is my favorite moment featuring them. The song emphasizes the importance of love and mentions that one can never have enough love-I strongly agree! It's an upbeat track with a hip-hop-like rhythm with smooth, calming backup vocals by Bear. He sings familiar phrases often found in old songs, like "Uh-huh" and "Oh yeah."

My favorite song from the series is Bear's signature song/dance, The Bear Cha Cha Cha. It is one of the most iconic and memorable songs and one of the few Bear songs I remembered long after I stopped watching the show for a while. It goes hard and is sure to get people up and dancing!

The Big Blue House is such a vibrant and inviting place! Its bright color makes it stand out beautifully in the landscape. The spacious interior is perfect for gatherings, with cozy corners encouraging relaxation and play. The living room swing adds a playful touch, inviting everyone to unwind and enjoy life.

The backyard feels like a magical forest with its tall trees and natural features. The scattered logs are perfect spots for sitting or playing, while the nearby pond adds a serene vibe, perfect for exploring nature. The overall atmosphere of the Big Blue House is warm and friendly, making it an ideal space for fun adventures and heartfelt moments. It feels like a home filled with imagination and joy!

Like most good shows, Bear in the Big Blue House is not without its flaws: 1) Bear's sudden sniffing scares me, especially when he presses his nose against the camera. 2) Treelo, while a good character, is annoying and unintelligible at times. 3) Speaking of Treelo, sometimes I can't understand his speech. 4) Ray's original design was creepy without visible eyes, though this was fixed in later episodes. 5) "When You've Got to Go," while a good episode, overuses toilet humor. 6) The 4th and final season focuses more on Woodland Valley than the Big Blue House, but it is still a decent season.

In conclusion, Bear in the Big Blue House combines warmth and wisdom, appealing to children and adults. Its gentle exploration of friendship, empathy, and overcoming fears sets it apart in in kid's shows. Revisiting the series has been a comforting experience, highlighting the importance of kindness and connection. I recommend it to anyone, whether nostalgic or new to the show, to enjoy the soothing world of Bear and his friends.

not only for kids but for everybody

I saw this show the first time because of my nephew and niece, twins aged 3.

From the first time I saw it, I loved it.

Basically, all you need to know is: It is made by Jim Henson Company. I mean, when I was a kid, I loved Sesame Street and I loved the Muppet Show. Now I am 25, and I really like this show, too. And, unlike many other kids tv (Pokemon, Teletubbies), even as an adult you can watch the show, without going insane.

In my eyes, it is the perfect Kids TV. When the Bear talks towards the camera, the kids really get involved in the show. You can't go wrong with that show.

A good show for the young crowd

Although I like to poke fun at this show, I must admit it has several pleasant qualities that make it a wonderful show. It's mainly for children not yet "graduated" into shows for older kids. It has a "Mr. Rogers" type of quality in that Bear talks to the children watching and sort of invites them in to play with all of his friends in the big blue house. It can teach things such as being nice to others, even if they do something you might not like. I recommend this show for children aged up to about 7 or 8 years. This show can be a nice show for a young family looking for something enjoyable to watch with their children. It's neither too violent nor too babyish and can be a nice way to pass an afternoon before naptime.

Absolutely awesome!

This is the most wonderful show for children of any age. Bear actually talks to the screen, and my 15 month old thinks that Bear is talking to him. It is a great show, with 5 other main characters beside Bear. There is Treelo, a lemur, Tutter the mouse, Pip and Pop are both otters and Luna is the moon. A truly creative show all around.

Bear in the Big Blue House is the best thing from Henson studios since Jim Henson passed away

My neice was a huge fan of Bear, and when I had my daughter I was glad to see that it was still on TV. Since my daughter was around 7 months old, she has adored Bear. She can actually sit through an entire episode without fussing or moving. The characters excite her (especially Tutter and Bear), and the gentle nature that Bear uses to interact with the viewers is superb. It can't help but foster respect for other people, and self confidence in the kids who watch it. The lessons are range from cleaning house to using the potty, to the different seasons. Each subject is treated with the same gravitas, and the opinions and thoughts of kids are nurtured and reinforced.

As an adult who watched his fair share of kids shows growing up (I was nurtured on a diet of Captain Kangaroo, Mister Rogers, Sesame Street and Electric Company), this is the best show I have seen for kids in a long time. Bear is a modern day Captain Kangaroo, the sidekicks are wacky, the lessons are important, and the kids are talked to, not talked at or talked down to.

Excellent for kids and Parents

I've watched BITBBH quite a few times with my 3 and 6 year old. Although it's my 3 year old who enjoys it the most. I find the story lines well conceived and the dialogue between the characters always on a positive side(no insults at each other under the guise of humor).

The thing I most enjoy with this show has been the musical numbers. I remember in particular a song that Bear did on "finding a lost thing." This stands out because Noel McNeal, who plays Bear can really belt out a tune. I find myself watching the show with my kids just to hear him sing songs.

But at the same time I feel good that this show also contains a strong emphasis on teaching children worthwhile life lessons on subjects like being a good friend, potty training, conquering fears and asking for help.

I recommend watching this show because it's easy as an adult to handle watching this at the same time as my kids do and me gives plenty of opportunities to share comments with them as the story lessons unfold.

outstanding show

Outstanding show for pre-schoolers done by Henson Productions. Definite alternative to the saccharine sweet purple dinosaur and other kids shows today. Live action puppets/muppets...Sort of a muppet show directed towards pre-schoolers teaching them what they need to know. First show that I have ever seen that tackled potty training, and did so with very good taste, compassion, and information.

This is a better show than you might think

It still has the distinctively twisted Muppet humor. The music is great and very catchy. I never would have been able to get my toddler's teeth brushed without "Brush Brush Bree". I'm terribly sorry if the adults without their own kids can't hack it, but it beats out Barney, The Comfy Couch, and all the other tripe posing as quality children's TV. Yes, you've got the Disney touch, but still. I would watch this any day of the week, and have, over and over and over. And I must say, to paraphrase Sideshow Bob, it never made me want to vomit. At one point, I had my son's uncles (all into middle age) watching it with him, and they loved it. This from a bunch of manly, beer drinkin', football watchin' guys. And my marine corps bred husband loves it too.
