I watched this movie a few times and I think that it's okay, but it's not enough to be considered a full-out survival movie like with some of the other films that Stewart Rafill had produced in the 1970s, including "The Adventures of the Wilderness Family" and "Across the Great Divide." For one thing, the Robinson family may have been stranded on an island after their boat sinks, but unlike the original Robinson's in Johann David Wyss' novel, there are no animal survivors with them, not even a couple of dogs or even a few chickens. For another, sustaining off of crayfish and fish caught in the island streams isn't enough to replenish the Robinsons' food supply when their food rations ran short. If Stewart Rafill could go back to 1998 and remake the film all over again, he should've added an extra 10-20 minutes to his film by adding these additional scenes and creatures;

1. The Robinsons' family dogs (2-3 German shepherds, pit bulls, or another dog breed) accompany the family on their seaward journey and survive the shipwreck. The dogs become their guardians and help them to hunt for food. 2. In addition to building their island home and fishing in the streams, the Robinsons also plant crops and grow corn, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, and peppers. They also find and harvest an abundance of fruits that grow on the island, including bananas, figs, peaches, limes, lemons, and pomegranates. 3. Anna Robinson and her daughter encounter the panther that Jack had seen a few weeks earlier, only to be rescued by Jack and the dogs who drive the panther away. 4. Elizabeth finds a baby monkey while going for a walk in the jungle and adopts it as a pet. The monkey causes a little mischief at first and sometimes annoys the family, but soon adepts we'll into the family by bringing them figs and other fruits that it finds in the tall fruit trees. 5. Jack and his sons discover a herd of wild goats and decide to capture a couple of them. After a few failed attempts, they successfully lasso and capture three goats which they soon tame and raise for milk. One of the goats also gives birth to a pair of kids, and Elizabeth is named legal guardian of the new additions to their goat herd. 6. In one scene during Francoise's stay on the island, Anna shows her how to milk the goats, Elizabeth and Francoise gather vegetables from the garden, and Shane and Todd show her how to fish in the river. 7. When two of the pirates confront the girls and Anna sprays their eyes with the makeshift pepper spray, the blinded pirates are then attacked by the dogs who come to the girls' aid. 8. During the last scene of the movie before the credits roll in, it should be shown that the Robinsons' dogs, goats, and pet monkey are also taken aboard the ship and accompany their owners back to civilization.

If Stewart Rafill read this, he'd be thinking, "You know, I never thought of that. If I went back in time to the year I was making this film, I could've added those scenes to the movie. But there's nothing I can do about that, I suppose."

This is a genuinely dreadful film for all the reasons previously mentioned; but the question which sprang out a mile, is why on earth, after changing so much of the story from the original and dropping all references to Switzerland or anything Swiss, did Disney still call it "The New Swiss Family Robinson"? For heaven's sake, at the start of the film the family boat was even flying a US flag rather than the Swiss flag. Why not just call the film "The Family Robinson"? It makes no sense at all. Can't believe that no one else has questioned this. But I guess that just sums up the naffness of the film as a whole.

Yowza! This one's a real groaner. The acting is abhorrent, the script is poorly written, and the plot is like swiss cheese. Full of holes. A 12 year old kid from Ohio could write a more interesting and realistic high seas adventure.

It is a watchable movie. But the Jack Robinson character is flat as a pancake. He was just going through the motions of the script. He did what he was supposed to do, and that was it. My dog displays emotion better than he did. Really ruined what could have been a pretty good movie. Think the director really dropped the ball. Something traumatic happens, and he behaves as if he's in a hurry to shorten the movie. Made the story unbelievable.

I must admit, this was not a good movie and I'm not hard to please when it comes to movies of this genre. It's a kids movie so I go in knowing that. However the writing lacks any kind of cohesion, the plot even for a kids adventure movie is full of holes. The original had great chemistry between the cast members, here there is no chemistry between any members of the cast. The acting is bad, the only ones I think acted decently and Seymour and the little girl, every one else seems to be delivering lines. The girl playing Francoise was simply beyond ridiculous in the beginning.

My suggestion is to stick to the original or the TV series they are older yes but far superior to this movie.

Disney has stooped low before, for example the remake of South Pacific but this is just low. I decided to give the movie a chance after all I do fondly remember the original Swiss Family Robinson. This movie sucked plain and simple. If Jane Seymor's career wasn't dying already this movie just gave it a good shot in the foot with a rusty bullet. The acting is horrible the actors especially the swiss family children are completely obnoxious. One would have to be a complete moron not to get this movie. If I were a child I would divorce my parents if that made me watch this crap. What happened to Disney? I think its Michael Eisner and his quest for family values. Walt Disney is rolling in his grave over this one.

Come on, it's obviously made only for children. That's highly obvious. So complaining about it seems a little bit ... Nevertheless, the base is ok, but with just a little more effort they could have made it more believable. In just few points. Not more than that, and the film would've been just all right.

This was a very stupid and bad movie. First of all, the whole pirate thing was unnecessary. It should have been enough excitement to show how the family struggle to survive in/against nature. Finding food and water, building a shelter, finding protection against wild animals and insects, making fire, manufacturing all things they will need such as weapons, pots, garments, taking care of illnesses and accidents without drugs or doctors, planning how to get into contact with the outside world (making a beacon and keeping it alive, building a raft, etc.). All this bit was made out to seem much too easy, compared to a survival situation in reality. The family members seem too unaffected and carefree most of the time. It is not psychologically correct at all. And the acting is very bad overall. It becomes very obvious why Jane Seymour never became a great character actress, despite of her great beauty.

The family Robinson is shipwrecked on a desert island.The New Swiss Family Robinson (1998) is directed by Stewart Raffill.It's based on the 1812 novel by Johann David Wyss.The real life couple, Jane Seymour and James Keach play Anna and Jack Robinson.The kids, Shane, Todd and Elizabeth are played by John Mallory Asher, Blake Bashoff and Jamie Renée Smith.The villain, Sheldon Blake, is played by the late David Carradine.Yumi Iwama plays Francoise.I think this movie is better than most people give credit for.First of all, it's rather exciting to watch this family trying to cope on a desert island.They have to build a house there, then they face all kinds of dangers, like bumping into a panther and a snake.And meeting with the pirates brings a little action into this movie.And there's also a romantic subplot between Shane and the French plane wreck survivor Francoise.I think the whole family can enjoy this ride.

The plot is painfully unbelievable and slow. The actors are plastic. They look like they are on a trip to the LA zoo rather than being shipwrecked on a deserted island, chased by pirates. I don't mind the pirates being imbeciles. It adds a comic element. But this film takes it to new heights.The sound quality on the VHS version that we viewed was very poor. We missed some of the dialogue, but most of what we heard was not worth hearing. The scenery was beautiful and the house that they built was really cool, but it is not enough to help this film. Don't waste your time on this one. I can't believe that Disney and actors of this caliber could produce this garbage.

I can't actually believed i sat through 3 quarters of an hour watching this rubbish, the acting is terrible and plot was so unbelievable (although it did make for a cheap laugh) i recommend watching the shark attack, its so unrealistic and funny. If you're really really bored i guess you could watch it for a laugh but other then that i wouldn't recommend to anyone, its that bad, and to top it all off its got Dr Quinn medicine woman in it! awful!!

The show seemed to be trying to go from the perspective of a kid daydreaming about what they would do in this situation. But unfortunately that means the show was as skizophrenic as an 8 year old's brain is too.

The show really should have just been a pirate movie. They spent so much time building up the family vacation part. But once they actually get to the island it doesn't seem like the writers knew how to write any interesting "island life" stories.

They easily could have just made the pirates maroon them on the island, then the next day or two they go back and fight the pirates and then get rescued. The "island survival" aspect was completely unnecessary, and honestly was the most boring part of the movie.

As for the acting, Jane Seymour is the queen of being overdramatic, and she did not disappoint here. But the rest of the cast was so wooden and boring, so I didn't mind it as much as I usually do.

The scenery was beautiful. The Polynesian girl and her pet orangutan who just magically got stranded on the same island was really forced and made little sense.

If you got kids who like this type of adventure stories, they may like it.

In this case this remake out classed the original. One of the best movies I ever seen.I haven't seen a best female supporting actress since Kim Hunter in a Street Car named Desire or Patty Duke in a Miracle Worker. This is Jane Seymour's Best film. I think she really re invented herself in this role. Action ,Adventure, Drama and comedy all in one. Best picture for 1999 should have been the New Swiss Family Robinson not American Beauty. This picture easily is as good as Titanic or Ben Hur. I think that the scores and selection of actors where better then The Return of the King. What was wrong with the Academy? I am surprise this movie didn't stay #1 at the box office for a couple of months. They need to use this movie at film school for an example of a true creative masterpiece. I really wish they would have considered making this into a franchise, like Lethal weapon or Star Wars. Its in the same caliber.

I like this movie very much. I especially like some of the twists and turns the plot takes. Although some of it is unbelievable that's ok because of the type of family movie it is.It is nice to see James Keach and Jane Seymour working together as husband and wife since they really are. A good movie all around for all ages to enjoy.

I pretty much enjoy anything in it with Jane Seymour. This is a good family film that shows how a loving family can come together and overcome anything, even pirates and shark attacks! The theme of people being shipwrecked sort of reminded me of The Last Flight Of Noah's Ark which in my opinion is the best Disney film ever made! This is a beautiful film to look at and the animals are really funny. There is also a wonderful scene where Jane is sick and throwing up in a big bucket that is really funny. A nice way to waste two hours.

I am in lack of words as to how amazed I am, that this movie exists..

This movie contains very serious with pirates shooting and wild animals (sharks, panther, crocs, apes...), and in other times the movie changes to almost circus clown comedy. As a result it is nothing but a poor script with ridiculous comedy twists, and with so bad special effects and film editing tricks.

To not be insulted by this movie at least a couple of times is impossible, unless you are very very young, or like very childish unthought movies.

I am amazed I haven't changed the channel after one hour, but more amazed that it is being shown 20:00 on a Saturday.. this should be shown at 06:00 in the morning, when adults sleep...

The orangutang is the worst part of this movie, please adults do not waste time on this, you will hit yourself..

This movie begs the question: was it made by a Film School as a worst-case scenario as to what will happen if you sleep in class? One would think that Disney had the resources to avoid a thoroughly mindless disaster like this. Watch it only if you're a film student or if you like to slap you forehead constantly for 90 minutes.
