Leary's so cool...

This movie could've easily been a total mess, but Denis Leary holds it together very well. You can't take your eyes off him when he's on the screen -- there's a scene in a cab when he reminded me A LOT of Jimmy Cagney -- he's just that intense. Actually, I had a lot of fun trying to figure out which Leary pal would make the next appearance -- Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs plays a small role as a killer, while former Bruins star Cam Neely has a cool cameo as well. And I was surprised to find out that "Mouse" was played by Ian Hart, who did great as John Lennon in "Backbeat". But after all is said and done, it's Denis Leary that captures your attention. He can handle leads, Hollywood.

Monument Avenue really works with it's fine acting and directing

Monument Avenue is a familiar story that has been done before. However, this film really works due to the fine acting and directing. Ted Demme does an outstanding job developing the characters through his his long and sometimes drawn out dialogue scenes. The cast of Dennis Leary and Famke Janssen are extremely convincing and really make this film better than most of it's kind. Perhaps the small, almost cameo roles played by stars Billy Crudup, Martin Sheen and Jeanne Tripplehorn are what really make this film worth seeing. This is a perfect example of how good directing and acting can make a big difference on a common and somewhat predictable script.

the code of silence

I grew up in this town of Charlestown a very strong irish neighborhood people here call themselves townies. The movie Monument Ave. is about the code of silence this town went through. Its very much like it but there were many more murders and alot more police arrests. Boston wanted to break the Irish Catholic clout in Charlestown and open the town up to new cultures, it never happened but since 2000 the town is only 93% Irish-Townie catholic. Monument Ave. was a very good movie and it explained what it was like here but it was much more violent. Charlestown was and still is a very dangerous town. Like in the movie brothers were killing brothers and people killing each other knowing that people would not tell that they did this, sex and drugs was involved in this alot too. Racism and Loyalty and doing inappropriate things like robbing, shooting, stabbing fighting, drinking etc. was a big thing here to. Kids around Charlestown (Townies) made a book about this called The Piece of Peace. There was 149 murders during the code of silence in Charlestown. Monument Ave. is a good explanation of what happened here. Thats what it was really like. Not like "Southie" which is nothing compared to Charlestown. But Monument Ave. was an exellent movie!

A great movie about real life

Truly one of the best independent films I've seen in a long time. Monument Ave is about one man struggling to maintain his loyalty to a vindictive crime boss or to his own principles as a man. The film gives a true to life look at working class Boston and some of the situations that people are in. Denis Leary uses his Boston personality in this well made drama. Among excellent performances is Colm Meaney as the nasty boss, Ian Hart as Leary's friend, and Famke Janssen as the boss' girlfriend.

Good Dark Movie With An Excellent Ear For Dialogue

This is definitely a dark movie but it is also one with an amazing dialogue and excellent acting. Many movies these days will trim back the amount of foul language in an effort to attract the sensitive types. Noose/Monument Avenue is one where the dialogue is authentic and you get the plain unvarnished truth. Perhaps that may be too much for the Politically Correct but I doubt if you'd get many of them in the Boston of Noose. The characters are so believable that you begin to wonder if you know people like this.

Teddy: Well, let me tell ya. This is fuckin' hilarious, you're gunna piss your pants. Remember that Perez, that fuckin' spic from Dorchester? Remember him?
Jackie O'Hara: What, the little guy?
Teddy: R-remember you sent me and Gavin down to talk to him? Gavvy, you remember that?
Gavin: [nods] Sure, I remember that.
Teddy: So about a month ago these F.B.I. guys come to talk to me in the joint. And, I don't even talk to regular cops, ever, you know? Like when they came to me after I got busted for all that coke... And they said 'Jackie O' and I said 'I know the guy, but I don't work for anyone'.
Jackie O'Hara: Hey, thanks for that by the way.
Teddy: That's no problem, Jackie. So, these F.B.I. guys want to know about Perez 'cause they're building a case against him, right? You're going to love this. I say, 'You mean Junior Perez of Columbia Avenue in Dorchester, about five-two, got a fat-assed girlfriend that looks like a fuckin' pitbull?' They said yeah, and I said 'No, never heard of the guy'.
[everyone laughs]
Teddy: Right? So now they roll up their sleeves. They're not going nowhere. And I sit there for three hours, fuckin' sweatin', shakin'. I almost start cryin'. It's like fuckin' Academy Award time. Finally I break down. And you know, I tell 'em the truth. I-I'm like George fuckin' Washington, I cannot tell a lie. 'I know Perez, and I used to work for him.'. I-I give 'em Perez, that fat fuckin' Columbian prick Menendez, locations, everything. And then they come back to me, and they want me to testify. It's like Witness Protection bullshit, and i'm like, 'Fuck you. I'm not going into any Witness Protection bullshit fuckin' plan. Fuck that! We made a deal!'. So now this lawyer they gave me is all over 'em. I'm not even safe in the joint with the witness protection and shit, and they got no choice! They gotta let me go.
Jackie O'Hara: [pause, everyone looks at each other] Fuck! Can you believe that? Fuck!
Teddy: Yeah, I tell ya it was a fuckin' nightmare. Never trust those Feds, man, they fuckin' lie. I'm lucky to be here.
Jackie O'Hara: Yeah, fuckin' Feds. Cocksuckers, huh?
Red: Pricks.
Jackie O'Hara: They're in Boston looking for Puerto Ricans. In Washington they're stealing us blind!
Red: Absolutely right.
Jackie O'Hara: Hey, here's to Teddy.
[raises glass]
Jackie O'Hara: Welcome home!
[all toasting, shouting]
Jackie O'Hara: When the cops gonna learn, huh? This town don't talk. Especially this kid right here.
[points and playfully slaps Seamus]
Jackie O'Hara: A fuckin' chatterbox, the gift of gab, huh?
[everyone laughs]
Jackie O'Hara: Hey guys I gotta go. Katy's mother's cookin' dinner. Anyone got any rolaids?
[laughing]
Teddy: Hey, hey, Jackie, uh, we're cool, right?
