Johnny is the youngest of the three brothers, while Chez is the middle child. However, Chris Penn was in fact four years younger than Vincent Gallo.
Vincent Gallo would later claim that the cast was usually left on their own to direct their performances, as director Abel Ferrara would often stay in his trailer smoking crack when it came time to film their scenes.
During filming, Vincent Gallo developed a reputation for actually striking other actors during fight scenes, even when he was told to stop. John Ventimiglia decided to take matters into his own hands, and beat Gallo himself during one of his own scenes. Gallo later sued Ventimiglia for assault and was awarded damages.
In the movie, the character of Johnny is seen secretly attending a secret Communist meeting. In real life, Vincent Gallo is a staunch Conservative Republican.
