Aditya Pancholi was given the role of Anand but Subhash Ghai felt Anil Kapoor would give more justice to the role. Pancholi later reportedly began to give Kapoor threatening phone calls over the role of Anand, the situation got so out of hand that the police got involved until Pancholi was caught he confessed he had made them threatening calls.

As of 2014, this is the only time that Shah Rukh Khan and Anil Kapoor have starred in a movie together.

Sanjay Dutt was orginally chosen to play the role of Anand and even shot some scenes for the film. However, because he had to serve a short prison sentence, the role had to be recast. 'Sunny Deol' was offered the role but turned it down. 'Anil Kapoor' was then offered the role and accepted.

Sunny Deol rejected the role only because Subhash Ghai rejected to delay the release of his film Jaan as Sunny feared it would release before his brother's debut Barsaat as he wanted Barsaat to be the launching vehicle for Bobby Deol.

Mukul Anand stated when Sanjay Dutt was doing the role the scenes with him and Shah Rukh Khan were different . The scenes originally looking up to Sanjay Dutt like a god like figure. But when Anil stepped into the role, Shah Rukh treated him like a elder brother . The character entered the film after the interval. It needed to be done by the biggest star of India. But Anil was going thru a bad phase so the impact got diluted .
