After Darr & Baazigar, Anjaam was the third film of Shahrukh Khan in negative role.

The producers told the distributors that the film did not have a hero. Shah Rukh was on all the publicity but was the film's villain. Deepak Tijori's role was too small to be considered the hero. The film's lead protagonist was only Madhuri Dixit.

The performances of Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan were critically acclaimed.

Anjaam director Rahul Rawail said "It was wonderful directing Madhuri and Shahrukh in Anjaam. They were always ready to go to any extent to make their part look convincing."

Anjaam became a cult film over the years. Shahrukh Khan's performance as an obsessive lover and Madhuri Dixit's performance as a revenge seeking wife and mother was widely praised.
