Nancy, a recently-widowed British-born American, finds that her husband has left her without much to support her and her son Jake. However, her husband had been a generous supporter of St. Maud's College, Cambridge. The one chance that she sees is to return to Cambridge and to seek a job there. She manages to negotiate a job as assistant bursar for herself and an athletic scholarship for otherwise-unqualified Jake.—Blair Stannard
