The 30th Biff has introduced the new Competition section and the ‘Busan Award,’ with the winners to be revealed at the Closing Ceremony. Na Hong-Jin, one of Korea’s most prominent new-generation masters, has been appointed Jury President. He will oversee the selection of winners from the 14 Competition titles that represent some of the year’s most outstanding Asian films.

Wong Kar-wai isn't a filmmaker particularly known for his sense of humour. His work is many things: romantic, sumptuous, sensual, atmospheric. When he does attempt comedy, it's often tied to one character, an oddball outlier who provides a humorous foil to one of his stony-faced protagonists. The last thing you would expect his name attached to is a wacky parody wuxia movie less in line with King Hu and more on the same page as a Zucker Brothers production, and yet, from the spare change of the enormously expensive and troubled production behind his own “Ashes of Time”, “The Eagle Shooting Heroes” exists.

Tony Leung Chiu-wai, the Hong Kong star of “In The Mood For Love” and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” has been named Asian Filmmaker of the Year by the Busan International Film Festival. Leung will collect his award at the festival’s opening ceremony on Oct. 5. 2022.

The festival will open with a screening of “Scent of Wind” by Hagi Mohaghegh. The Iranian director previously won the 2015 New Currents competition in Busan with his second feature “Immortal.”

The festival will close with “A Man,” from Japan’s Ishikawa Kei. The title premiered this week at the Venice film festival in the Orrizonti section.

Busan organizers said that the festival will play a total of 243 films (features and shorts) from 71 countries and territories. These include 89 world premieres and 13 international premieres.

Guest curator Imogen Sara Smith, a critic and author of the book In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond the City, assembles a series of films that revolve around enigmatic faces transformed by masks, scars, and surgery, including Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face (1960) and Hiroshi Teshigahara’s The Face of Another (1966).

iQiyi chief Yang Xianghua revealed further details of the Chinese streaming giant’s licensing deal with Netflix at the Winston Baker Film Finance Forum at the on-going Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff).

Although there has been speculation that the cooperation is a wide-ranging pact, Yang said there is no difference with iQiyi’s licensing deals with the Us major studios. “Netflix was trying to find a unique approach in the Chinese market, but there has been no quick success for the company yet,” said Yang during his keynote.
