Adrift

This is actually an okay little thriller very much in a Dead Calm vein. There's some needless sub-plot about extra-marital affairs at the start but once the action starts its pretty good.

An above average TV Movie with only a few "Thats just stupid - no-one would do that moments". The craziest being when one of the good-guys is trying to quietly escape but takes time-out on the way to noisily trash the villian's room thus putting the kibosh on the whole thing.

These things withstanding its worth 90 minutes or so of your time.

Even tho its a TV movie its quite good. If you like Dead Calm then you will like this one. Since there are not many boat movies like it. Hard to find on DVD and not available on Blu-ray. Most likely will not see on Netflix. Anyway back to the movie. It does have a good story and kept me interested. I love boats and sailing and this kinda thing does happen around the world, probably more then we know. I'm lucky since I have 2 copies of this movie!

This is the best comedy I've ever seen! Two badly acted psychos terrorise two badly acted partners on a badly acted boat! Okay I think I've overkilled it a bit now. Sorry. Anyway, I couldn't catch the plot 'cause I was laughing so hard. Actually, I told you it earlier. This is definitely a bad movie, not even so bad it's good, it's just, well, bad! Rating: 1/5

Not to be confused with the Shailene Woodley theatrical film from a couple years ago, this early 90s TV movie feels like it resulted from the popularity of an Australian movie from 1989 called DEAD CALM starring Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill. While not exactly alike, there are definite similarities. Sadly, this one pales in comparison. It is a rather unpleasant experience with scenes obviously meant for tension and suspense that instead come across as merely gratuitous - thankfully the more gruesome moments take place offscreen. To what degree this movie works is thanks to the underrated acting chops of Kate Jackson. I've always felt she was an actress just a project or two away from great things. (She was the first choice for Meryl Streep's role in KRAMER VS KRAMER, but the producers of CHARLIE'S ANGELS wouldn't let her out of her contract.) She carries the bulk of this project on her shoulders, and one can't help but wish she was in a better movie with better performances - a young actress named Kelly Rowan is absolutely dreadful as the female antagonist. It's an instantly forgettable movie that sinks almost as badly as the Titanic.

Adrift really ought to sail away and never return. When I first watched this a few years ago now, I thought to myself how can a well known Hollywood actress like Kate Jackson even contemplate accepting a role in such drivel? The suspense IS there in Adrift, and we can certainly believe that we do not know what is going to happen, no matter how hard we try and guess, but the cheap and 'cheerful' image Adrift gives out lets the side down. This film is basically a low budgeted version of the 1988 thriller Dead Calm, but the sense of loneliness and eeriness in that film never materialises in Adrift, and viewers will always realise the limit in budget and the weak unpretentious script.
