Clint Eastwood has directed and starred in several incredible films and was the poster boy (or should we say poster man) for masculinity in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The Western legend played no-nonsense heroes who did the right thing, with his signature squint and never-give-up attitude. However, there was one movie that broke this image.

Before Eastwood became the symbol of badassery with Dirty Harry, in the same year, he starred in Don Siegel’s The Beguiled (1971). The Gothic thriller saw Eastwood play a wounded Union soldier, who becomes the object of fascination of a group of nuns of all ages as he recovers in their Seminary. Eastwood reportedly regretted the film’s performance.

If anyone (or two) can break the narrative that there needs to be only one maestro in one genre, that will be Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood. As the two stars have accumulated decades of experience in their resume, they have also cultivated the reputation of auteurs of Western cinema.

While Costner and Eastwood’s filmographies often fall under the lens for a perceived competition, more often than not, their Westerns complement each other.

Following the success of his Dances With Wolves, Costner went on to direct a few more Westerns, including Open Range in 2003, starring a pre-Andor Diego Luna. Despite Open Range being a Costner film, spiritually it was more akin to Eastwood’s 1992 tentpole, Unforgiven.

Clint Eastwood is not really an auteur filmmaker, but he has a certain affinity for particular genres. Throughout his showbiz run, Kevin Costner has become notable for his prolific presence in the western landscape, which dates back to his initial days in the industry, starting with Silverado in ’85. Even though Silverado served as a breakout point for the actor, the movie that made his presence prominent within the genre was his directorial debut, which premiered 5 years later.

Clint Eastwood has always reigned over the landscape of American western cinema with an iron fist. His memorable portrayal of earnest cowboys of few words was unrivaled until Kevin Costner made an equally grand entry to spice up the movies from the wild west.

While we are not going into the debate regarding who should be crowned the undisputed king of the Hollywood Westerns, Costner, in Dances With Wolves, did something which even Eastwood’s mystical thespian abilities failed to match. No, we are not talking about who is the better director between the two, but rather we are trying to point out how Costner’s cinematic poetry aided in resuscitating a dying genre by breathing a fresh lease of life.

For the last century or so, Western cinema charmed a major section of the cinema-goers’ imagination.

Clint Eastwood is a legendary actor and filmmaker who has been an inspiring presence for many generations of artists after him. The two-time Oscar winner is one of the most prolific filmmakers in the business and the nonagenarian recently directed his apparent final film Juror #2. However, his old classics are still influential.

Sebastian Stan recently credited his performance as a wiser and older Bucky Barnes in the MCU’s Thunderbolts* to Eastwood’s Oscar-winning film. He did not mean that his performance was anywhere near Eastwood’s masterful performance as William Munny in Unforgiven, but he reportedly took inspiration from it.

On paper (and on screen), Clint Eastwood’s revisionist Western Unforgiven is as similar to Marvel’s Thunderbolts* as apples are to oranges. They are both fruits, and these are both movies.

Warner Bros. threw the film industry a curveball when it abruptly shut down pre-production on Luca Guadagnino's "Sgt. Rock." The DC Studios production carried a $70 million budget (reasonable for a studio war flick based on a comic book), had attracted a killer cast that included Colin Farrell (who took over the role from Daniel Craig) and Mike Faist and David Jonsson, and was set to shoot this summer. Some felt it was an odd choice for Guadagnino, but he's made a career out of odd choices. I still don't know if I like his earth-tone remake of Dario Argento's "Suspiria," but I respect the audacity. To his maverick credit, Guadagnino's "Sgt. Rock," which got greenlit primarily because DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran flipped for "Challenger" writer Justin Kuritzkes' screenplay, almost certainly wouldn't have been the "Sgt. Rock" movie I've been clamoring for since the late 1980s.

Rust is certainly one independently made movie that doesn’t need publicity.

The Western starring Alec Baldwin, who also came up with the story and serves as a producer, was hit by tragedy during production in October 2021 when Baldwin’s prop gun discharged during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and also injuring director-screenwriter Joel Souza. Production on the film halted immediately and finally resumed in April 2023. Legal cases involving Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, both charged with manslaughter, ended with Baldwin’s case being dismissed and Gutierrez-Reed found guilty.

The events of this tragedy made headlines around the globe and certainly raised doubts that the film itself would be finished, let alone see the light of day. In the end it was decided that to honor Hutchins’ final work the film would be completed, no profits would be shared by the original producers, and Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins would...

Gene Hackman, the legendary tough-guy actor famous for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, enjoyed a peaceful life in Santa Fe with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, a gifted pianist. They lived away from the Hollywood limelight for over 30 years, preferring to keep their personal lives private, until their tragic passing in February.

In February 2025, their private world was shattered in a way that sounds straight out of a movie; there was no happy ending this time. Two months after Gene Hackman was found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in the couple’s New Mexico home, the results of the screen legend’s autopsy have been made public.

The circumstances of Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths initially had investigators baffled.

They now believe that she died first, and Hackman, who suffered from dementia, wandered the massive home in a state of confusion before passing away himself.

On Monday, the results of Hackman’s final autopsy were made public, and they reveal chilling details of the actor’s final days.

In addition to a “history of congestive heart failure” and “severe chronic hypertensive changes” to his kidneys, medical investigators determined that Hackman had undergone a period of “prolonged fasting.”

The Return opens with Odysseus (Ralph Fiennes) washing up on a beach, and relies on good old-fashioned dialogue and performance to do the dramatic heavy lifting. There’s no reference to Odysseus’ adventures since leaving Troy — no recounted tales of sirens, the cyclops, or divine meddling. Here, we’re on the human level of psychology and emotion, making this a thoroughly modern, if relatively mundane, interpretation.

In the 1960s, Clint Eastwood was seen as a quintessential Western actor for films and shows like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Rawhide, A Fistful of Dollars, and For a Few Dollars More. But Eastwood’s 1992 film Unforgiven, which he also directed, put the actor on the map as an iconic filmmaker. Unforgiven, which won four Oscars in 1993, will stream on Paramount+ starting April 1.

The film won Eastwood his first Best Director Academy Award and also took home the Best Picture Oscar.
