It's no wonder that "Seinfeld" is one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. It debuted in 1989, when a lot of American audiences were beginning to tire of the old-fashioned sitcom tropes that had dominated the medium since the 1950s. Too many shows were about the suburban domestic experience, the urban single-life experience, or the blue-collar workspace, and the jokes began to become stale across all three. In the late 1980s, though, a trio of hit shows began to actively tear down the old ways, presenting shows about cynical, bitter characters who rarely learned a "moral of the story." The first was 1987's "Married... with Children," a domestic sitcom about losers who hated each other. There was also "The Simpsons," a deeply sarcastic series about the raw ugliness of the domestic struggle. And then there was Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David's "Seinfeld," a "show about nothing," wherein the...

Milla Jovovich recalls how "demoralizing" it was to be a child actor in Hollywood and how this defined her Dazed and Confused role. Jovovich's acting career dates back to the late '80s and early '90s, with roles in projects like Paradise, Married...with Children, Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991), and Chaplin (1992). Released in 1993, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused features a cast stacked with an impressive array of actors, many of whom would go on to become major stars. Jovovich appears in the film as Michelle Burroughs, who plays a guitar at a fire in one memorable sequence.
During a recent interview with GQ in which she looks back at the most iconic roles from her career, Jovovich reveals that her role as Michelle in Dazed and Confused was informed by her "soul-sucking" experience as a child actor. She doesn't get into any specifics in terms of what projects...

The longest-running scripted American television series of all time is "The Simpsons," an adult animated show created by Matt Groening. Premiering in 1989, "The Simpsons" changed things as a cartoon that isn't exclusively geared toward younger audiences and also reinvented the sitcom format. The series showcased a modern middle-class family, loving yet utterly dysfunctional, while getting in plenty of mischief along the way. The show both tonally echoed contemporary sitcoms at the time of its debut and went on to inspire countless animated series that followed it.
With "The Simpsons" such an enduring and influential fixture in American television, there are a multitude of shows like it. Whether animated or in live-action, there are plenty of sitcoms that share DNA with Groening's masterpiece. At the core of most of these shows is a family, either biological or surrogate, defined by their differences and offbeat love for one another, marked with plenty of laughs.

Before securing the role of Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actor Brent Spiner was perhaps most widely recognized for his recurring role as Bob Wheeler on the sitcom "Night Court." He also had one-shot appearances on various other hit TV shows like "Tales from the Darkside," "The Paper Chase," and "Ryan's Hope." He also had a bit part in the excellent cult musical "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" and was one of the background students in "Grease 2." Spiner had been acting in Broadway productions throughout the 1970s.
Data was a boon to his career, making him a household name, and giving him a role that he would continue to revisit for decades. Spiner has always felt ambivalent about Data, however, loving the fame, but resenting how he had been typecast. He has since referred to Data as a double-edged sword. For many of us, it's hard to imagine a time before "The Simpsons." As the longest-running scripted television series of all time, "The Simpsons" has been on the air since 1989, and while the show has certainly evolved over 36 seasons, some things have been there since the beginning. Maggie has always been a little too smart for a baby, Homer has always been a bit of a jerk sometimes, and people are rather inexplicably bright yellow, and that goes back to before the animated family even had their own television series.
Before creator Matt Groening had a show of his own, the Simpson family and their neighbors in Springfield were the stars of a series of shorts on the Emmy-winning Fox sketch comedy series "The Tracey Ullman Show." Though how exactly "The Simpsons" were conceived is contentious, we know for sure that the very first "Simpsons" short aired on the first...

From April 4 to May 23, 2001, Comedy Central ran eight episodes of a 30-minute sitcom called "That's My Bush!," a sendup of the then-active George W. Bush administration. The premise of the show was as broad as possible. George W. Bush (Timothy Bottoms) was in the White House, but his life was more akin to that of an old-fashioned, 1980s-era workplace sitcom than that of a sitting president. There was a noisy, obnoxious laugh track paired with bright, even TV lighting, making the show look deliberately old-fashioned and artificial. Kurt Fuller played the buttoned-down killjoy Karl Rove, while Carrie Quinn Dolin played Laura Bush.
More than being a spoof of the Bush administration, however (and there was plenty to spoof), "That's My Bush!" was a satire of all-American sitcoms. Show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker (of "South Park" fame) merely used the White House as a backdrop to mock dated sitcom...

Since its end in 1997, "Married... with Children" has maintained a legacy as one of the strangest and longest-running television shows of its kind. The Fox sitcom was, on its face, a standard multi-camera sitcom about a dysfunctional family and the colorfully zany characters that breezed in and out of their suburban enclosure. At the same time, it bucked contemporary genre conventions, daring to push the boundaries of acceptable behavior for sitcom protagonists while leaning into the surrealist subgenre -- which, relative to the tamer landscape of TV back in the late '80s and '90s, surely must've surprised some audiences.
And yet, as odd and abrasive as the show could be, the series was reliably anchored by a powerhouse cast of comedic actors at the top of their game. This included Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, and Christina Applegate, all three of whom have been receptive to revive the series...

What is the deal with the "Seinfeld" opening theme music? What? They couldn't afford to record an actual theme sequence? Remember "The Brady Bunch"? And how that theme song explained everything you needed to know about the show? "The Brady Bunch" even had a handy 3x3 grid of all the characters, so you could keep everyone straight. "Seinfeld" just had some bass grooves and some guy beatboxing, just kind of freestylin' it. You'd think they could at least write some lyrics. "Here's Jerry. He's neurotic and selfish. Here's George. He's neurotic and selfish." Kinda writes itself!
Jerry Seinfeld impersonations aside, the "Seinfeld" theme music was always unique. It was constructed out of beatboxing, some electronic harmonica-like noises, and a lot of electric bass, and it was never the same from episode to episode. The music was performed by musician Jonathan Wolff, who also composed music for sitcoms like "Who's the Boss?,...

Prior to about 1987, American sitcoms were — generally speaking — very different. No matter the premise or intended demographic, most sitcoms focused on a reliable comedic structure of set-ups and payoffs. From "I Love Lucy" all the way to "Diff'rent Strokes," sitcom writers were careful to explore a recognizable domestic/workplace/common setting environment through sharply recognized, very funny characters. The same writers were typically also careful to lay out gags and jokes very clearly. Every setup usually led to some kind of punchline or payoff.
In the late 1980s, however, sitcoms underwent a reckoning. It seems that audiences and many longtime writers became tired of the decades of well-worm tropes and structures, and they began to deconstruct. 1987 saw the debut of "Married... With Children," a sitcom that followed an aggressively dysfunctional family who all kind of hated each other. Their causticness was the joke. Then, in 1989, "The Simpsons" debuted, handily satirizing...

When Matt Groening's "The Simpsons" debuted during the Christmas season of 1989, it was an immediate sensation. Some fans might have known the Simpsons characters from their appearances on "The Tracey Ullman Show," and readers of local indie newspapers likely knew of Groening's "Life in Hell" comic strip, but for most audiences, "The Simpsons" was a bolt from the blue. It was an anti-sitcom, a surreal show with weirdly designed characters (yellow skin?) that satirized and deconstructed the middle-class wholesomeness of mainstream 1980s television. It was an antidote to the ultra-conservative "family values" crowd that was so noisy during the Reagan administration. And audiences were ready for it.
"The Simpsons" started big and only got bigger. The year 1990 was big for pop culture, as "The Simpsons" -- along with shows like "Seinfeld" and "Married... with Children" -- undid old tropes and invented new ones. One might even be so bold...

You couldn't make "Seinfeld" today. Because it's already 2:30, and you said you'd run to the grocery store to get some more butter and milk. Also, you need to bring your dad his back medicine, and he lives way over on the other side of town, and traffic is usually back that time of day, so by the time you got home, it'd be dinner time. There's just not enough time to produce 180 episodes of a hit sitcom before bed.
Ha ha. That was fun.
In actuality, one couldn't make "Seinfeld" in 2024 because, like all shows, it was a product of its time. "Seinfeld" debuted in 1989, when Americans were growing increasingly tired of wholesome and predictable sitcom tropes that had been repeated, ad nauseam, for decades. Some of the most popular sitcoms of the late '80s served as deconstructionist works, taking the bland wholesomeness of classic American TV and setting it on its ear.

What do you mean TV insults are not the reason for the season? Family gatherings throughout the holidays are not always bastions of constructive thought and civilized conversation!
Well, maybe they are for some. But where is the fun in that? If you’re anything like me, you have a relatively dysfunctional family that hurls as many insults as compliments.
In that situation, it pays to be on your toes and keep your wits about you.
(Fox)
While this list is all about defending oneself from familial onslaughts, it’s not about making enemies of your own blood. Well, maybe the in-laws, but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles all too often.
Try to avoid creating a massive rift in the family by slinging an ill-timed Family Guy joke in front of grandma.
Of course, some of the best insults come from the raunchiest shows and characters.

Michael Clarke Duncan had a physique that made him perfect for the strongman and powerful characters he played over the course of his career. Getting shredded for a part is commonplace for Marvel actors these days, but there have been plenty of stars who maintained a superhero-level physique throughout their careers, providing them with a niche in the movie and television industry. Michael Clarke Duncan used his size difference to separate himself from the pack when going into auditions, leading to a successful, if all too brief, career.
Duncan had an exceptional career in both film and television, starting in 1995 when he had an uncredited appearance in Friday and appeared in episodes of four notable TV shows, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Married... with Children. This last year, Marvel completely proved me wrong by bringing back an initiative I didnt think would ever properly return in the form of the Ultimate Universe. Mainstream comics publishers try a lot of different things, and sometimes you just go "thats not going to work," but Im more than happy to have been proven wrong.
I really didnt think that Marvels new Ultimate Universe would be a success - right up until it was. The original Ultimate Universe, beginning with 2000s Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, Art Thibert, Steve Buccellato, and Richard Starkings, re-imagined Marvels mythos as though they began in the then-present moment. For Spidey, this meant that Peter Parker was a recognizably nerdy teen dealing with the teen issies of the early 2000s. For other books, it meant interacting directly with real politics.

It shouldn't be a surprise to learn co-stars don't always get along when the cameras aren't rolling, but the on-screen professionalism of some TV duos does a great job at concealing real-life feuds. The story of therapist Jimmy Laird will finally continue after over a year of fan anticipation, with Shrinking returning to Apple TV+ later this month. Last season, viewers saw Laird - played by Jason Segel - take on an unorthodox approach with his clients and tell them how he truly feels. The best Eric Dane movies and TV shows have mostly come on the small screen, with some major roles in significant television shows. While Dane was a high school athlete, he moved into acting after working in a school production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and started taking on smaller roles in television shows. He finally got his first major role after appearing in The Wonder Years, Saved by the Bell, Roseanne, and Married... with Children.
This was in a medical drama called Gideon's Crossing. While that show didn't last over one season, it was a big reason he got cast as Dr. Sloan in Grey's Anatomy, which made him a star. That show brought him a lot of attention from critics and award ceremonies, and it helped him move on to other starring roles on television and a handful of movies along the way.

Retirement clearly isnt in the cards for Harrison Ford. As it turns out, the 82-year-old, Oscar-nominated thespian (Best Actor | Witness) continues to get essential human contact out of each and every acting job he takes. At this stage of his career, Ford also admits he is still having "fun" starring as Dr. Paul Rhoades in the Apple TV+ series Shrinking with Jason Segel, and Season 2 of the highly anticipated dramedy drops later this week. In a recent interview, the Star Wars and Indiana Jones phenom was asked what he gets out of acting all of these years later, and Ford answered by telling Vanity Fair:
Oh man, I get out of it essential human contact. I get to imagine with people that have great skill and experience. Its fun to work with these people.

Michael Scott from The Office stands among the pantheon of legendary sitcom characters, alongside Rachel and Ross (Friends), George Costanza (Seinfeld), Al Bundy (Married with Children), and Ron Swanson (Parks & Rec). But he wasn't always the World's Best Boss, as director Paul Feig revealed that early ratings for the show suggested a seething hatred for the character from audiences. That is until Steve Carell flipped the entire dynamic with a single, inspired acting choice.
Appearing on the Dinner's On Me podcast, Paul Feig recalled working on the earlier seasons of The Office and the mixed audience reaction to Michael Scott's early persona. "So Steve was this huge star all of a sudden, and they had this huge star in the show that they thought wasn't working, and it wasn't working in the ratings," he began. Prior to "Gilligan's Island" in 1964, Tina Louise was already a long-working actress. Indeed, Louise worked her first modeling gig at the age of two, appearing in an ad campaign for her father's candy store. In high school, she started studying acting, and landed her first professional gig in 1956, appearing in an episode of the TV series "Studio One." She made her feature film debut in Anthony Mann's celebrated drama "God's Little Acre," in which Louise played Griselda, the wife of a character played by Jack Lord. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
Louise went on to star in other high-profile film projects, including Michael Curtiz's "The Hangman," and the 1960 Italian historical epic "The Siege of Syracuse," in which she played three different roles. Despite the fact that the characters on sitcoms are usually close friends or even family, there are frequently feuds behind-the-scenes that can make filming pretty difficult. Sometimes things get bad enough that people get fired, like when Dan Harmon was kicked off of "Community" because of a spat with star Chevy Chase, but usually everyone can work things out at least somewhat professionally.

Premiering in 1982, Cheers was a staple in many households for the better part of the decade, introducing audiences to a colorful group of characters that spent their days and nights drowning their sorrows in suds at the titular Boston locale. Though the show was nearly canceled after its first season due to low ratings, some NBC execs saw its potential and were willing to give the series a chance. Their instincts proved correct, as Cheers went on to become one of the greatest sitcoms in TV history, and placed in the Top 10 ratings list for eight of its 11 seasons. Now, UK execs are hoping that lightning will strike twice, as the influential classic is getting the remake treatment for a British audience.

Married...with Children was an epic television series that transformed sitcoms into a new being. With raunchy jokes, Married...with Children satirized and popularized the dysfunctional family trope. Its success was met with controversy and boycotting, which only further drew in a following. The show lined up with The Simpsons, both literally in the time slot and the style of the satirizing material. Married...with Children ran for eleven seasons, creating 263 episodes. Without Married...with Children, sitcoms like The Simpsons, Righteous Gemstones, or Shameless would never exist. The legacy of Married...with Children is solidified in its decade-long runtime.
There were little to no changes to the cast throughout the run of Married...with Children except when the character Steve Rhoades left the show. Steve was the husband of Marcy, and they were a newlywed couple in the first episode. Peg, Al's wife, played by Katey Segal, invites them over and tells Al that they're recently married,...

Married...with Children is a quintessential sitcom from the 1980s and 1990s that everyone knows. It played a big role in changing exactly what a sitcom could be. At times, it was controversial, in your face, and raunchier than anything else on broadcast television. Al Buddy, played by Ed O'Neil, was a grumpy, wise-cracking, working-class dad, whose misanthropic ways got him into trouble often. He was relatable through the plights that life gave him. In every episode, he uttered sarcasm and hilarity as he bickered with his ungrateful family. The show has humble beginnings and fought the battle of cancelation for several years after the pilot was picked up.

Premiering in 1987, Married with Children broke television barriers by focusing on the dysfunctional Bundy household during an era when similar sitcoms took a more wholesome approach to the nuclear family. Lasting for 11 seasons on Fox, the series is still the longest-running live-action sitcom in the history of the network, which is somewhat surprising given the fact that it was never a huge success in the ratings (the highest it ever got was #37 overall during the 1991-1992 TV season). All good things must come to an end, though, and Married with Children was unceremoniously canceled in 1997, and two of its most popular stars, Ed ONeill and Christina Applegate, are opening up about how they found out the show wasnt returning for a 12th season.

Married with Children stars Christina Applegate and Ed O'Neill speak about the famous sitcoms abrupt cancelation. Initially premiering on Fox in 1987, Married with Children focused on the interesting dynamics of the Bundy family. The body of work that Oasis amassed between 1994 and 1996—including Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, and at least another album’s worth of essential b-sides—has sustained their reputation through the 15 years that have elapsed since Liam and Noel Gallagher parted ways professionally. The band’s first two studio albums are remarkable not only for the quality of the material contained within, but also for the differences between them in terms of content and presentation. While the songs on Morning Glory resulted in copious airplay, Definitely Maybe has enabled Oasis to retain some alt-rock credibility.
This sense of indie authenticity is, in part, the result of the conditions under which Definitely Maybe was made. The story, of a group of twentysomething outsiders drawn to making music in the hope of escaping a life of limited means, is familiar. According to a recent interview with Noel, all...

Netflix is about two months into filming the second season of One Piece, according to Deadline. The first season of One Piece, based on the world-famous manga by Eiichiro Oda, was a big hit when it landed in 2023; bucking the trend of so many anime-to-live-action adaptations, it preserved the loopy elasticity of the animated original while still taking viewers on a rip-roaring journey that worked well in live-action. Monkey D. Younger readers might be shocked to hear this, but back in the mid-90s "The Simpsons" was nothing short of a phenomenon. While it has now become a sort of incongruous TV specter, simultaneously forgotten but somehow still haunting the airwaves with new episodes, "The Simpsons" was once about as popular as TV shows get. After "Married with Children" helped put Fox on the map by proving dysfunctional TV families could work just as well as the more wholesome fare being offered elsewhere, things were perfectly primed for "The Simpsons" to dominate — and dominate it did.
"Simpsons" mania was a real and inexorable force during the height of the show's popularity, and not just in the US. As a BBC Two documentary for the show's ten-year anniversary explained, the series created a "bonanza," whereby its biggest breakout star, Bart Simpson, became fodder for global bootleggers — surely the clearest sign that...

The episode of "The Simpsons" called "Homer's Enemy" is one of the most memorable — and darkest — episodes of the series. It features a new character named Frank Grimes (Hank Azaria), recently hired at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Grimes is stern, serious, intelligent, and worked his way into a well-paying nuclear power gig after struggling out of childhood poverty. He has an unshakeable work ethic, and a deep concern for safety. Naturally, when he meets a feckless, incompetent boob like Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta), Grimes instantly becomes incensed. How can this fool, Grimes felt, have a successful job and a loving family, even when he is obviously incompetent to a life-threatening degree?
Homer's incompetence even gets Grimes in trouble. When Homer almost drinks a glass of sulfuric acid, Grimes slaps it out of his hand, accidentally dissolving part of a nearby wall. Grimes receives a pay cut for destroying the wall.

Chris Rock headlines the voice cast of animated sequel Everybody Still Hates Chris, and here are the details.
Chris Rock attained superstardom following his second HBO stand-up special Bring The Pain in 1996. After the much publicized incident at the Oscars two years ago, Rock released Netflix special Selective Outrage and co-starred in civil rights drama Rustin.
In 2005, autobiographical sitcom Everybody Hates Chris premiered on television. Broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK, the show portrays a semi-fictionalized version of Rock’s childhood. Tyler James Williams portrayed a teenage Rock, alongside Terry Crews as father Julius, Tichina Arnold as mother Rochelle, Tequan Richmond as younger brother Drew, Imani Hakim as younger sister Tonya and Vincent Martella as Rock’s school friend Greg.
