The movie was filmed with Farrah Fawcett in it as a former Delta Gamma, but after poor audience testing, the film was re-edited just prior to its release to remove all of her scenes. According to the Fulvue Drive-in website, "Originally, Farrah Fawcett was prominently featured in the film, in what was more or less a major love interest for Wilder's character. She was cut out at the last minute, explaining why this film is so choppy."

Conceived by producer Jon Avnet after reading an article in Esquire Magazine by syndicated award-winning columnist Bob Greene titled "Convention of the Love Goddesses", which Avnet perceived as "An exploration of a man's relationship with the women in his life." Greene wrote the article after serving as guest speaker at the national convention of the Delta Gamma sorority.
In real life, Gene Wilder is only three years younger than the man playing his father, Robert Prosky.
Leonard Nimoy was chosen to direct this comedy about having babies, and biological clocks, because he had previously directed the hit parenthood comedy 3 Men and a Baby (1987), and the family custody drama The Good Mother (1988).
