If you were a struggling actor in the U.K. in the early 2010s, odds are you probably auditioned for "Game of Thrones." Set in the epic world created by George R.R. Martin and considered one of the best fantasy shows of all time, the series showcased an expansive roster of widely beloved (and horribly loathsome) characters. That cast included all-time greats of British film and theater, like Sean Bean and Charles Dance, as well as future stars like Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington.
However, as with any popular show, many actors auditioned or were offered parts that never materialized, or perhaps not in the way they had anticipated. From future A-listers who HBO unbelievably rejected to big names the show wasn't able to convince to be a part of the pop culture phenomenon, these are 15 actors who were almost cast on "Game of Thrones," but thankfully, for the actors...

HBO is expanding its Game of Thrones franchise, but the many planned spinoffs overlook a core part of the original show. Even prior to Game of Thrones’ ending, HBO was looking at ways to continue things, exploring various prequel options. One, Bloodmoon, based on the Long Night, made it to the pilot stage, before being scrapped despite a reported $25-30 million being spent on it. So far, only House of the Dragon has actually made it to the screen.
That will change with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ release later in 2025, though it’s not actually a bad thing. The network is clearly taking its time to assess the many different options it has, only green lighting something when they’re really happy with it - a somewhat rare degree of patience in a world where franchises are king. Still, with so many Game of Thrones spinoffs in development,...

Despite HBO's most popular series, Game of Thrones, airing its final episode back in 2019, the network is nowhere near finished creating new stories that take place in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy world. Currently, fans impatiently await season three of the first of many spin-offs, House of the Dragon. However, few know that a prequel series called Bloodmoon was originally supposed to air in its place — costing HBO a whopping $30 million for its failed pilot.
Bloodmoon would have brought viewers thousands of years into the past to likely explore the events of The Long Night, provide more context for the controversial eighth season of Game of Thrones, and present the origins of House Lannister and Casterly Rock. With showrunner and writer Jane Goldman, most known for fan-favorite Kingsman: The Secret Service, Madame Web director S.J. Clarkson, and Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts at the helm, the show promised incredible success. So,...

After the success of Game of Thrones, it's no surprise HBO is planning to build out the fantasy franchise through spinoffs — though some of the network's plans are more exciting than others. There are six Game of Thrones spinoff series in various stages of development, as well as a recently announced Game of Thrones movie to look forward to. All of these will explore different locations, time periods, and characters from George R.R. Martin's vast A Song of Ice and Fire universe. Martin's books offer a lot to cover, so there's plenty of potential in Westeros' history.
House of the Dragon, which just finished its second season, is already exploring this. And A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is set to follow suit in 2025. The release timelines and statuses of the other Game of Thrones spinoffs are less clear, and given the shelving of the Jon...

Since Game of Thrones premiered its final episode in 2019, endless reports on spin-offs have flooded the internet. House of the Dragon was the first idea of many, and HBO will debut A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms next year. Both spin-offs are based on written material by author George R.R. Martin, but many other projects have been announced, rumored, and scrapped in the meantime. Only two years ago, media outlets reported the various shows in development, spanning from live-action to animation. Martin has discussed numerous different spin-offs receiving script treatments. This included The Sea Snake and Golden Empire animated series, Ten Thousand Ships, and a Jon Snow (Kit Harington) sequel series. We know that the Snow series has since been shelved, and a pilot for a prequel series called Bloodmoon was eventually cancelled.

Game of Thrones ended after eight seasons in 2019. The prequel show House of the Dragon wrapped up its second season earlier this year, with a third on the way in 2026. And next year, HBO will debut a new prequel show, set decades after the events of House of the Dragon but decades before Game of Thrones.
The show is called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it's based on author George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. The series will follow the adventures of a stalwart knight named Dunk (Peter Claffey) and his precocious squie Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). It's set to be a lighter take on the Game of Thrones, and based on what Martin has seen, he's "so so happy" with it so far.

HBO head Casey Bloys revealed how far along the recently announced Game of Thrones movie is. Throughout its run on HBO, Game of Thrones became one of the most popular shows in the world. Ever since its conclusion in 2019, HBO and Warner Bros. have attempted to expand the franchise with spinoff shows like House of the Dragon and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Now, Warner Bros. is eager to bring the world of Westeros to the big screen.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Bloys recently spoke about the Game Thrones movie at a 2025 preview event. In the sprawling landscape of television, few shows have captured global attention and cultural significance like Game of Thrones. With its unprecedented success, HBO saw an opportunity to extend the universe crafted by George R. R. Martin. While that became a reality with the show’s prequel spin-off, House of the Dragon, the production company initially had plans to tackle yet another amazing storyline. However, the plans for that ended up falling through.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Fire & Blood, the book on which House of the Dragon is based.
The theory that Daemon Targaryen is the Night King has gained traction since House of the Dragon season 2's finale. The speculation around Daemon being the Night King shows a desire for more answers about the White Walkers. Bloodmoon could have provided those answers, but HBO canceled the spinoff after filming a pilot.
A theory about Game of Thrones' Night King and House of the Dragon's Daemon Targaryen being the same person has gained a lot of traction. Its a fun, if wild, piece of speculation, as many of the most compelling theories are, but it also makes me more annoyed that HBO scrapped its plans for a spinoff about the Long Night.

With the success of Game of Thrones and now its spinoff House of the Dragon, it’s no surprise that HBO is looking to continue expanding upon this world that George R. R. Martin created. With a vast history of rich characters, there is plenty still left to be explored in Westeros – it’s just a matter of finding the right stories to tell.
Some series will never see the light of day, while others are in active development, slowly but surely working their way to our screens. From Snow to Sea Snake, here are all of the Game of Thrones spinoffs that have been conceptualized in the wake of the series’ ending, and their status.

When the first round of Game of Thrones spinoffs was unveiled, one idea in particular stuck out as a bit odd.
Amid the natural options like a flashback to the ancient Long Night (which became the canceled pilot Bloodmoon) and the depiction of the Dance of the Dragons civil war (which became the successful prequel House of the Dragon), was a Jon Snow series starring Kit Harington.
The fact that Harington was attached meant that this wouldn’t be any kind of prequel exercise (not that it could be since a young Jon doesn’t get up to much before Thrones‘ story begins) but rather a direct continuation of The Bastard of Winterfell’s story North of the Wall. Without any kind of source material from George R.R. Martin to work with, what direction would such a TV series even take? Thanks to a new Kit Harington interview with GQ,...

Game of Thrones' canceled Bloodmoon prequel could have provided depth to the White Walkers plot and the Night King, enriching the show's lore. Naomi Watts' character in Bloodmoon could have been a strong female hero with her own arc, fixing mistakes with Daenerys. HBO's cancelation of Bloodmoon was a missed opportunity to expand the Game of Thrones universe and give audiences a fresh perspective.
Game of Thrones season 8, based on George R. R. Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire, was criticized harshly over the series' end. Most of the criticism was over its handling of the White Walkers plot and Daenerys' sudden character change. Bloodmoon's title was announced on June 8, 2018, and it could have provided the depth and backstory that season 8 lacked. It could have given audiences the strong female hero promised throughout the original series. Sadly, the Game of Thrones prequel series was canceled...

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should focus on storytelling, character development, and emotional depth rather than spectacle. The show must differentiate itself from the previous Game of Thrones spin-off while maintaining the atmosphere of Westeros. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' success is crucial for the future of the Game of Thrones franchise and its spin-offs.
The Game of Thrones franchise has done the impossible; it successfully survived the widespread disappointment of the shows final season. In the five years since Game of Thrones wrapped up its concluding eighth season in the summer of 2019, there have been more than a few attempts to bring the franchise back. The first of these, a prequel series titled Bloodmoon, would have been a series centered around the Long Night set 10,000 years before the original Game of Thrones series. That show was ultimately scrapped after HBO was displeased with the pilot episode that was produced.

Red Wisdom mod brings a major new storyline to Morrowind after 21 years. A collaborative effort by an original quest designer and modders creates a new journey. Players can unravel an ancient prophecy and explore a new grotto.
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind has just got a new storyline courtesy of one of the game's original quest designers. While it has been over 20 years since Morrowind was released on PC and Xbox, the title is still praised for its open-ended, varied storytelling, and is still easily playable due to subsequent digital releases on PC launchers such as Steam, and Xbox's backwards-compatibility scheme.
Douglas Goodall, who goes by Affa on Nexus Mods, has teamed up with fellow modders Greatness7 and Melchior Dahrk to create Red Wisdom - An Ashlander Prophecy, a mod that explores a new angle to Ashlander lore and sees players facing wild beasts and Daedric interlopers on a new journey.

Since the end of Game of Thrones, HBO has expanded the series into a franchise, announcing their intent to make several spin-offs, beginning with House of the Dragon, which is now in its second season. But every story planned for the franchise will not make it to screens. Bloodmoon was famously abandoned after filming a pilot, and more recently, the series about Kit Harington's Jon Snow after the events of the original series was shelved. Though many fans hoped to see a series that could right the wrongs of the Game of Thrones finale, the choice to leave Jon's story alone makes sense. Continuing the story of an established character like Jon comes with innate challenges, especially when Game of Thrones didn't leave an open ending.

As secrets come out and the body count grows, a character in Bloodmoon says to another: “This is nightmare night, the end-of-the-fuckin’-world night… all the bugs and the bats and the goblins are coming out tonight and no one can stop them.” Based on that rather dramatic statement, one delivered by actor Christine Amor without her even batting an eyelid, this underseen 1990 Australian film sounds a bit deranged. Rest assured, that assumption isn’t off the mark. Of course, this shouldn’t come as a surprise; audacity and nuttiness tend to go hand in hand in classic Ozploitation. Nevertheless, director Alec Mills and screenwriter Robert Brennan’s collaboration was not quite like anything to come out of Aussie Horror at the time. Even today, parts of Bloodmoon feel singular when compared to films from that first slasher cycle.

Madame Web filmmaker Sj Clarkson is both persistent and prolific. The British director has helmed at least 109 episodes of television from 2001 until now. She cut her teeth to the tune of 37 episodes on a British medical soap known as Doctors, but that experience eventually paved the way for the likes of Dexter, Orange Is the New Black and Succession. (Her first episode of Dexter ended with John Lithgow’s iconic line of, “Hello, Dexter Morgan.”)

Bloodmoon had the potential to be just as stunning as Game of Thrones, judging by the detailed costumes and set design seen in the BTS images of Naomi Watts. The canceled prequel could have expanded on the origins of House Lannister and Casterly Rock, offering a deeper exploration of the world of Westeros during the Age of Heroes. Bloodmoon, the canceled Game of Thrones spinoff series, would have explored the Age of Heroes and set the stage for the Long Night and the war against the white walkers. Naomi Watts played the lead character, described as a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret, in the pilot episode of Bloodmoon. The discontinuation of Bloodmoon reminds us of the unpredictable nature of television production and represents untold stories and unexplored characters.
New intriguing images from the canceled Game of Thrones spinoff series, titled Bloodmoon, featuring Naomi Watts as the lead character, have been unveiled to the public.
The project's inception traces back to 2018 when HBO announced its plans to delve deeper into the Game of Thrones mythos. New behind-the-scenes images reveal Naomi Watts' character from the scrapped Game of Thrones prequel, Bloodmoon. The unaired pilot intended to introduce viewers to Westeros during the Age of Heroes was ultimately passed on by HBO. Watts' character, described as a charismatic socialite with a dark secret, may have had a connection to House Lannister and the figure, Lann the Clever.
New behind-the-scenes images have revealed a look at Naomi Watts' character from the scrapped Game of Thrones prequel developed under the working title Bloodmoon. Taking the form of an unaired pilot that was commissioned by HBO in 2018, Bloodmoon would have served to introduce viewers to Westeros during the Age of Heroes, an era set roughly 10,000 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. While the show’s pilot episode was completed, HBO ultimately decided to pass on the project and directed their attention toward developing House of the Dragon instead.

A planned Game of Thrones spinoff series Naomi Watts may never see the light of day, but new photos reveal a look at the show's lead character.
Before House of the Dragon, it was announced in 2018 that a prequel series was in the works dubbed Bloodmoon. Naomi Watts was set to lead the cast of the spinoff, which was set roughly 10,000 years before the events of the original series. While few details have been shared about her character, she was described as a "charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret." A pilot for the show was shot, but HBO ultimately passed on the series in 2019. The pilot was then buried in HBO's vault, but hair and makeup designer Flora Moody has shared a post on Instagram featuring some images of Watts in character from the ill-fated series.

Game of Thrones' ending was controversial, but the franchise is not dead. House of the Dragon won back viewers, setting the stage for future spinoffs. HBO could massively expand the Game of Thrones franchise, if in-development spinoffs are finally ordered to series. House of the Dragon season 2 is expected to break records and attract even more viewers, with the potential to break records.
Five years on from Game of Thrones, HBO’s franchise could have its biggest year yet in 2024, with plans for expansion and the potential for new successes. Game of Thrones’ ending was extremely controversial, despite the show once looking untouchable and too big to fail. Having been one of the most acclaimed, watched, and talked about TV shows of all time, the joy turned into ashes in the mouths of some viewers who were left disappointed by many choices made by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Severin Films kicks off the new year with three North American premieres that bring “one of the best labels in physical media” (Polygon) into 2024 replete with classic monsters, barbed-wire garrotes, ‘80s Italo-Sleaze in Uhd and arguably the most depraved bedtime accessory ever created.
For January, Severin presents the ultimate version of Jess Franco’s 1972 mash-up Dracula, Prisoner Of Frankenstein; the rarely-seen Ozploitation slasher Bloodmoon, complete with infamous ‘Fright Break Challenge’; and Andrea Bianchi’s off-the-rails zombie carnage classic Burial Ground, now in eye-popping, flesh-ripping 4K.
To further celebrate everyone’s favorite shambling Etruscans, an all-new Burial Ground t-shirt and Michael Pillowcase will be available in two of this month’s bundles.
January also brings much-requested wide-release versions of previously limited-edition titles — Frank Henenlotter’s black comedy shocker Bad Biology, controversial ‘80s sleaze classic Nightmare and Lucio Fulci’s giallo masterpiece The Psychic — all fully restored in 4K Uhd.

There are many Game of Thrones spinoffs rumored to be in development, including a Jon Snow sequel series, but none have been green-lit yet. HBO has officially ordered the Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight and it will start shooting in spring 2024. Spinoffs like 10,000 Ships and The Sea Snake are reportedly in development, while Flea Bottom and Bloodmoon have been canceled. HBO is being cautious to avoid oversaturation.
Additional Game of Thrones spinoffs, including the Jon Snow sequel show, receive a cautious development update from HBO boss Casey Bloys. Following the phenomenal success of Game of Thrones, HBO began developing many more shows set in Westeros based on the works of author George R.R. Martin, including House of the Dragon. However, of all the Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, the laboriously titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight...

While Hollywood is often criticized for being oversaturated with prequels, sequels, and reboots, there are a number of TV show spinoffs with loads of potential that should have happened but never moved forward. Spinoffs aren't always a bad thing. Better Call Saul surprisingly managed to live up to the excellent quality of Breaking Bad. Spinoffs like Frasier and Angel had strong reputations of their own, and House of the Dragon has been a great first step in repairing the value of the Game of Thrones franchise.
Though great spinoff TV shows are far and few between, a thoughtful, well-made offshoot can build on a beloved fictional world. Unfortunately, there are many promising television show ideas that fail to get the green light for numerous reasons, including those that continue or branch off from existing series, and tons of scripts with great potential are scrapped constantly. The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:
Dolph Lundgren
Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

In 2018, a year before Game of Thrones wrapped up its final season, HBO approached the author and creator of the original book series George R.R. Martin regarding ideas for some successor series. Several were initially announced, including the one that would become House of the Dragon. There was another unnamed project, which HBO produced a pilot for in 2019 but ultimately passed on after reviewing it.
The pilot cost $30 million to produce and would have starred Naomi Watts, as well as Andor actor Denise Gough. Also attached to the project were S.J. Clarkson as director and Jane Goldman as showrunner. Although Bloodmoon was used as the show's production title, it never received an official title, and after it was canned, HBO reportedly did not even permit Grrm to see the finished pilot.

The Jon Snow spinoff, which would serve as a Game of Thrones sequel, has received a somewhat disappointing update from HBO, but that itself is a good sign for how the network is handling both that show and the franchise in general. Given the success of both Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon, there are unsurprisingly multiple more Westeros-set spinoffs in the works, but few are confirmed to actually be happening. Outside of House of the Dragon season 2, the only other series ordered by HBO so far is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, but it's expected others will follow.
One of those may be the Jon Snow sequel show. The show, which was first reported in 2022, is one of the most surprising spinoff ideas given how directly it would follow on from Game of Thrones' ending, which didn't exactly set up more of Jon Snow's story.

Two old ladies in a thrift store open boxes to reveal dismembered body parts.
