The names Chip and and Dale were chosen as a humorous wordplay. They are named in reference to Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), an influential cabinet-maker and furniture designer of the 18th century.

The appearence of Chip and Dale were modeled after Indiana Jones and Magnum P.I. as Chip wears a leather jacket and hat and Dale a Hawaiian shirt. Coincidentally, both of these characters are associated with actor Tom Selleck; he played Magnum P.I. and was under consideration for the role of Indiana Jones.

Like many cartoons of the late 80s and early 90s, the show was canceled following the production of its 65th episode, despite being a ratings success. Industry logic at the time held that cartoons were only successful for sale in syndication packages, the minimum number of which was 65 episodes.
