- Otis P. Hazelrigg: A friend of mine was killed the other night.
- Mrs. Ritter: So I heard.
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: They all think it was an accident.
- [he stares at her]
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: I don't.
- Mrs. Ritter: That so?
- [pause]
- Mrs. Ritter: There's other justice in this world-...
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: Beside the law.
- Mrs. Ritter: It's a fact. What you sow, so shall you reap.
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: An eye for an eye.
- Mrs. Ritter: [nods] Tooth for tooth... hand for hand... foot for foot...
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: A life for a life?
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: Bubba didn't tell you that, Bubba didn't tell you anything. Bubba's dead.
- Marylee Williams: I know.
- Mrs. Ritter: [to her son's murderers after the court has let them go] You may think you're getting off free, but there's other justice in this world besides the law!
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: Word to the wise, Mrs. Ritter... it's even now. Let it lie.
- Mrs. Ritter: [shakes her head] Not hardly. It ain't even... not so long as you're walkin'!
- Marylee Williams: [to Bubba's mother] Don't worry, Mrs. Ritter... Bubba's not gone. He's just being silly. Don't you know what he's doing?
- [Mrs. Ritter shakes her head]
- Marylee Williams: He's playing the hiding game.
- Mrs. Ritter: [to Hazelrigg] You may think you've got the rest of them fooled, but I know exactly what you are!
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: This is official.
- Mrs. Ritter: Official? Who do you think you are? The only official you ever done is lick stamps.
- Skeeter Norris: [the scarecrow has appeared, then vanished from Philby's field] Maybe we should just go tell the sheriff.
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: Are you crazy? You wanna spend the rest of your life in prison?
- Philby: Well, it's better than dyin'!
- Otis P. Hazelrigg: At least, let's get inside; somebody's gonna see us out here and wonder.
- Philby: For God's sake, Otis... is that all you can worry about? Somebody's gonna see us and wonder?
- Philby: [to Hazelrigg] Now you listen to me, Oiis, and you listen good... you got me into this, now you just think of something to get me out quick!
- Skeeter Norris: [on top of Bubba's casket, about to re-seal it, as Hazelrigg watches him from outside the grave] ... Mister Hazelrigg, did you know I have a cousin who lives up in the hills of Arkansas...? Way back there in the woods, with nobody around for miles. In fact, all they got is a dirt road for the last 12 miles getting up there. When I was a kid, I spent the summers there. Just beautiful country... fishing... great hunting...
