The shop exteriors were actually two restaurants next door to each other , one Indian and one Greek, in the village of Claygate, Surrey. To accommodate the series location filming both restaurants closed for a two week summer holiday at the same time once a year and the Thames television art department would temporarily turn the shop fronts into the neighbouring antique dealers seen in the show.

Donald Sinden's wife Diana Sinden appeared in two episodes of the series, Just the Ticket (1989) and The First of the Queue (1991).

Whilst the series was despised by critics who thought it twee and unoriginal, it was nevertheless a ratings success for many years.

Both of Donald Sinden's sons appeared in the series. Jeremy as a doctor in Blood Brothers (series 2 ep 4), Marc as a police sergeant in A Night to Remember (series 6 ep 4), and both as policemen in A Car by any Other Name (series 10 ep6).

Before working on this show, Windsor Davies was working on It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974), and one of the last episodes of that show shared a similar title: Never the Twain Shall Meet (1981); it aired less than 3 weeks before this series premiered.
