For the longest time, the 1983 movie Nightmares has had to endure misconceptions. This includes the idea that the movie is really “a failed horror anthology TV pilot that instead got slapped together for a full theatrical release.” The backstory for Joseph Sargent’s omnibus certainly went through a game of telephone before getting fact-checked years later. And unfortunately for anyone who prefers the appeal of an underdog, Nightmares was never a failure from the get-go.

One might ask, why would a studio put any more effort and money into something deemed unviable for TV? Leaving the finished Nightmares to toil away inside a vault, or hiding it somewhere in the NBC schedule,...

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has announced its selection of 20 film projects and four immersive projects for the 42nd edition of CineMart, Rotterdam’s co-production market. The 2025 CineMart runs from Feb. 2 to Feb. 5, 2025. Rotterdam’s industry section, the IFFR Pro Days, is scheduled from Jan. 31 to Feb. 5.

Among the highlights of the projects set for CineMart are Ukrainian auteur Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk’s Something Strange Happened to Me, the director’s follow-up to his acclaimed debut Pamfir; Kenyan filmmaker Angela Wanjiku Wamai’s neo-Western Enkop; and The Uganda Project, the new film from Daniel Mann, whose Under a Blue Sun screened in Rotterdam’s Tiger Competition in 2024.

CineMart, part of the festival’s IFFR Pro offering, has revealed 20 feature film projects and four immersive projects for its upcoming 42nd edition, which runs from February 2-5, 2025.

Meanwhile, IFFR Pro’s work-in-progress strand Darkroom has doubled in size for 2025, with 10 feature projects and two immersive projects being presented.

The CineMart line-up includes Ukrainian director Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk with Something Strange Happened To Me.His debut Pamfir premiered in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2022.

By the early 1970s there had been a revival of interest in the format of anthology suspense/horror stories. This genre had been all the rage in the late 1950s and early 1960s with shows like "The Twilight Zone", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Thriller!" (hosted by Boris Karloff) attracting loyal audiences. "Twilight Zone" creator and host Rod Serling had two bites at the apple when he introduced "Night Gallery" as a TV movie in 1969 (giving young Steven Spielberg his first major directing gig) and then spun it off into a moderately successful weekly TV series. The early to mid-1970s also saw a major resurgence in horror-themed anthology feature films. Darkroom was a thriller anthology series, much in the vein of Night Gallery, where each story had an image to present before it began. The series was hosted by James Coburn, who introduced each story segment as a photographer in his darkroom, developing photographs and tales. The innovative aspect of this particular anthology series was that the story segments had free range to be as long or as short as the story needed to be, as long as the segments fit within the hour duration. Most episodes contained two stories, but at times there were three.

Actress Rue McClanahan was best known for her role as lusty Southern belle Blanche Devereaux on the television sitcom The Golden Girls. She had a successful career on stage, film and television for over fifty years.

She was born Eddi-Rue McClanahan in Healdton, Oklahoma on February 21, 1934. She studied theater at the University of Tulsa and made her professional stage debut at the Erie Playhouse in Pennsylvania in 1957. Soon after, she was performing in off-Broadway plays in New York.

McClanahan began acting in films in the early 1960s, appearing in the low-budget thriller Five Minutes to Live (aka Door-to-Door Maniac) (1961) starring Johnny Cash. She continued her career in such features as the Sherlock Holmsian fantasy They Might Be Giants (1971) with George C. Scott, and the western slasher film Blade (1973).

She starred as Vivian Cavender Harmon, Bea Arthur’s title character’s best friend, in the sitcom Maude from 1972 to 1978. She starred...

Beloved TV actress Rue McClanahan, best known for her oversexed, promiscuous and outgoing menopausal portrayal of southern belle Blanche Devereaux on the 1980's TV series The Golden Girls has passed away at the age of 76 from a stroke.

We'd like to take a moment to remember Rue from her beginnings, in horror films, like 1961's Five Minutes to Live, in which she played a small uncredited role; the strippers-getting-killed-by-a-maniac TV film Angel's Flight; the episode Daisies of James Coburn's TV-horror series Darkroom; Jeff Lieberman's slasher Blade; and the sci-fi movie Starship Troopers. The Associated Press has reported that actor David Carradine was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Bangkok, an apparent suicide. Carradine, who was in the Thai city to shoot a movie, was 72.

The actor was discovered by a hotel maid hanged with a curtain cord, and a preliminary police investigation found no signs of foul play. Further details are being withheld out of consideration for his family.
